I personally would have chosen Kaneda’s theme from the movie Akira to go with this scene. Never in a million years would I think that this Euro-Western score would have worked so well.
Amazing how The Bride had absolutely NO fear in challenging every other opponent prior to this, but she looks scared out of her mind going into this fight with O'Ren!
@@kaiverse9568 I'd chalk that up more to fatigue after fighting 40 or so opponents nonstop up until that point, 2 of them nearly matching her in skill. She was exhausted and was thus unsure if she could win at this point. Similar to how in DC Comics, Bane organized a prison break, exhausting Batman by having him fight so many prisoners, then completely wearing him down during their face-off, and then breaking Batman's back over his knee. O-Ren used the exact same strategy here. It's smart, cowardly, but smart.
Those old conservative Japanese people must be crazy mad at this movie because of this lol A “halfbreed” and a white chick are the best samurai-like swordsmen of their universe
Agreed!!! I still remember where I was when I saw/heard this the first time! (9th grade band class on my bandmates Zune, while we were supposed to be practicing flight of the bumblebee...which was also in this movie)
I don't understand why O-ren had to be a part of the wedding massacre. After being what O-ren went through as a child, and her family being killed, she should have sympathy hurting a pregnant woman. Watching her family being gutted by thugs, O-ren grows up to be just as heartless and murderous like them. When Beatrix gets revenge, I wonder if O-ren had any flashbacks and realized "wait this all seems too familiar". Yet she ignores all that and continues to be a killer towards Beatrix.
+Eden Maru she probably got well compensated for the massacre. Remember that O-Ren was financially backed by Bill which helped her become the head of the Tokyo Underworld.
+Eden Maru In addition to what you said, I believe Quentin revealed that the person who stabbed her father with a sword was indeed Bill. So one more reason. :)
This is one of the best movie scenes ever. Why? Pretty simple: you don't need to know anything. You watch one of the last scenes in this movie and you're in. No storytelling, no nothing. Only pure movie. Pictures and sounds. Terrific. Thank you, Quentin.
this is the only death i didnt agree with. maybe i have sympathy because shes beautiful or because i always thought of her as alex from charlie's angels. towards the end of the fight during their conversation i got the vibe that the bride and Oren were friends. i really do believe that she took her out not because she wanted to, but because she felt it was something she had to do
Notice how calculated and skilled they both were! This is a real Sword fight! In the real world a sword fight wouldn't last very long. All you have to do is find one weakness and the person is done for. They barely took their eyes off of each other in this fight. Well done
Except that's literally not how any real katana duel goes. At all. They're designed so that they're most effective in quick cutting motions. It's all about reading your opponent's body language.
Which is what O-ren was doing with all of her attacks. Beatrix, on the other hand, had a Hanzo sword, so she can go bananas, not cut properly and the thing would still slice through things like butter. That's why after O-Ren cuts Beatrix's back, she calls her a silly caucasian that like to play with swords, because she was not using her sword properly.
A true master Samurai who follows the code of Bushido, would have NO emotions at all, there are no opponents, every dual is a lesson in itself. Seek perfection in everything, you do not exist, only the task at hand and how it is carried out!
Lucy Liu lost the fight but stole this beautifully choreographed scene. From her bow to her last blow, Lucy's performance was graceful yet fierce. Understated yet commanding. Brilliant by any standard.
1:10 I've watched this scene a million times but just now realized the background imagery for each of them reflects their character. O-Ren's background is illuminated by the light of the moon hidden behind the clouds, a calm, collected and serene light, coming from above; Beatrix's background is illuminated by the light of fire lanterns, warm, passionate and raging. Truly an amazing scene.
Spanish and Japanese Culture oddly fits together perfectly. If you think about it one fills in what the other culture lacks and the rest of it they both complement each other
I like O-Ren the most because her apology for me seemed the most sincere... I dont know why, and i guess she just accepted the fact that she was going to die.
Only in the last moments of her life did she realize "that was a Hatori Hanzo sword"... That is, she realized that Hanzo did make her the sword, and why
She was once have her upbringig being chinese japanese american being mocked, and she cut the man who mock her. She make fun of Beatrix being “silly caucasian girl playing with samurai sword” now she lost her head too.
Watching this again after a long time finally made me realize why Tarantino's movies appear so different. He doesn't just add a layer of style to his movies, he drowns them in it as to create some kind of hardcore drug to the senses. That man is a gift.
Salem Al Hassani в этой сцене в Орен идёт внутренняя борьба между другом и королевой криминального мира. Отчётливо видно, как ей тяжело убить Биатрикс. Хотя она могла легко это сделать
I often come here to see this scene once again. The music, the setting, the snow, the japanese clothing, the katanas, the fight itself being anime without really being anime. This scene is a masterpiece
Never understood how this music is supposed to fit in an oriental style fighting scene, but hell, that fits pretty well anyway. Hell, Tarantino IS a badass director.
That's part of Tarantino's genius. As you probably know, he's the one that usually chooses the soundtrack for his movies (most of the times from his personal music collection). And he takes songs that have absolutely no connection to his plot and fits them in as if they were composed for that scene.
Beatrix lopping the end off of O-Ren's sheath timed to the drum beat of the music was so satisfying. I adored the tension the song built coming to an abrupt end with a crimson slice opening up across the Bride's back...so many movies build to these moments and end up floundering, trying to feel larger than life. Crazy part is that it actually *does* feel like O-Ren could win this fight even though we know Beatrix is just getting started.
1:49 God, I love those humming sound the swords made as they drew closer to each other. And the way it touch to feels solid, like it's magnetic or something.
"I hope you have saved your energy, otherwise you won't last five minutes." Pretty subtle foreshadowing, since the time elapsed from when the music cues to the fatal blow of the duel is exactly 4 minutes and 59 seconds.
This scene is beyond EPIC!I am in awe!The music and the acting are just priceless!Quentin Tarantino always does his miracle! It is a grand duel between two good friends!
It's cool how at the 0:45 mark, O-Ren rises from a crouched position while Beatrix lowers to a crouch. O-Ren rising like a great menacing cobra, and Beatrix shrinking like a frightened mouse.
Fun fact. Before they started fighting, O-Ren tells Beatrix "I hope you saved your energy, otherwise you won't last 5 minutes". From the moment they start fighting to O-Ren's death, it's 4 minutes 59 seconds.
Oren's graceful movement here mirrors the graceful movement of a deadly viper. 0:07-0:12 she rises as if a snake rearing its head, 0:20 she unsheathes her sword, like a viper baring its fangs, and 0:25 onwards, the sound of the sword being unsheathed sounds like the hissing of a snake, as if making its intent to strike known. Tarantino is such a genius.
I absolutely love the sound their swords make as they get closer, and when they finally touch. This whole scene, with the music, is stunning. Bravo Quentin!
1:00 Smart girl. that she deliberately approach the sheath to detect cutting edge. inspecting the cross-section detail after cutting. The way to reveal sharpness of sword. Since O-ren doubt that Hattori Hanzo sword before. Then O-ren smile O-ren is kind enough to believe what she say about the sword.
Not likely. Originally, he had planned to do Volume 3 ten years after Volume 2. It would have involved Vernita's daughter seeking revenge on the Bride, and she would have been trained by Sofie Fatale and Ellie Driver. However, he has since wanted to focus on other non-related projects.
***** BLIND Ellie Driver and Sofie Fatale with ONE ARM? I thought Ellie Driver got bit by the snake because she probably couldn't get out of the trailer. Yes, I did hear about that and I hope he still does it but I hope Vernita's daughter finds a real master like The Bride did but I hope The Bride wins the fight. Sorry. The Bride went through too much with losing and fighting to get back her daughter.

that little surprise in her look when she notices the scabbard being cut I think means only a hattori hanzo sword would be able to cut it, she looks too surprised to be an ordinary scabbard. Plus the fact that after you can notice she's holding back a smile as validation that The Bride managed to get hanzo to make one last sword.
Whenever I watch this scene, I always get the feeling that O-Ren knew The Bride would come for her and had resigned herself to only put in half her best. There are plenty of occasions she could have killed Beatrix, or at least wounded her more severely. Also, I think that Beatrix wanted to kill O-Ren least of the Squad. The fight's short and her death is unspectacular, and a lot less violent than the others.
Wow, such an excellent scene, when they are fighting outside! There is real beauty and power in not just HOW they fight, but how their fight contrasts that stunning Japanese winter garden setting... how they see each other with burning passion in their eyes as respected enemies while the snow gracefully lays down all around them... and with great music too! Excellent work!
Орен и Беатрис шикарны в этой сцене. это сражение больше похоже на танец между ними, нежели, чем реальное сражение на мечах. в этой сцене полностью отражается боль и скорбь в каждом из характеров, от того, что они теперь враги. 0:46 we all know Beatrix can tower over O-ren. But in that moment, it feels like O-ren was more bigger and it really intimidated beatrix. I just signifies that O-ren’s presence is something else.
Man, the music in this scene is awesome! I wish it lasted through the whole fight. Does anyone know the name of the song? (Edit: Okay, I know the name of the song now, so no more Darude Sandstorm replies please). Showdown at the house of blue leaves is one of the best action sequences in all of Hollywood. Who cares about realism when it's just THAT good?
The song is called Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa Esmerelda. It's a remix specifically done for the movie, so the only place to find this mix of it is on the official soundtrack.
I love the way each character is taken out. Oren by a sword, Vernita by knife, Budd by a black mumba snake, Elle with her other eye taken out, and Bill with the Five palm technique.
When I've come to think of this movie and this scene one thing that I feel is that O-Ren and Beatrix were the closer of the squad they were possibly close friends that's why the eye contact is so intense between this two characters and because maybe each other fought in the past (you know the friendly usual sparring among friends that are skilled at martial arts) they respect each other prowress and B is having a hard time with O.Ren not only because of this but because of the friendship.
Anyone else feel like O-Ren kinda felt sorry for the bride and just let her get her that easily? Being the leader of the Yakuza, one of the world's top assassins, I thought she would put up a bigger fight with the bride. Maybe it's just me...
0:24 - 0:37 O Ren Ishii: You are the most badass Blonde girl i ever see. The Bride: I'll let go my rage O Ren Ishii: then Allow me to cool Your Anger. The Bride: all right, Come and try. Ren. O Ren Ishii: Exactly where are you from. Bride.
WHAT AN EPIC SCENE!! I love this fight scene. Wish the uploader had started the video right at the moment she starts to step out of her slides. That's important to the scene because the music comes in when she takes her first step. She then proceeds to bow slowly yet gracefully sideways acknowledging her opponent. Lucy Liu was the right actress for that part. What a lady.
This couldn't be a more perfect scene, I mean, in the beginning you see Uma Thurman fighting in a restaurant but then she opens the door and surprise...a typical japanse garden, snowing, perfect soundtrack, two great warriors facing each other in one of the most epic sword duels.
O-Ren is my absolute favorite of all the Deadly Viper's . . . her fight with Beatrix was the most built up (besides Bill) and by far the most satisfying
SuperImmunologist chronologically, yes she kills oren and then vernita. But in terms of how the story is told, you see her kill vernita first and then the story goes back to oren
Still one of my favorite scenes ever!! Especially the part where O-ren flips both sword and sheath?? With the swishing sound, she looked both menacing and beautiful. Plus this sooonnggg... been inside my ears for days, truly befitting for this scene!😭💕👌
They seemed like friends due to the "silly rabbits" comment, and their short conversation kind of hints at the fact that they were closer than the others.
kudos to the director of this masterpiece very well written , this scene conveys a lot of emotion without a single word, especially that sword lift at 01:29 beautifully makes an impact
Useful to remember that Beatrix had fought to the edge of exhaustion already. She's running on pure adrenaline at this point. Vernita was supposedly the most skilled Viper with an edged weapon, but I always assumed that was more knives than anything else.
O Ren makes Darth Vader look like a sissy. She looks you in the eyes, lets you know what you're getting then comes up close and cuts you. No magic; just supreme skills and style. The Bride did not really become REALLY badass until she beat O Ren.
Two kinds of Samurai sword is seens here, I just don't know what their specific names are. But the one without a guard for the hand is a sword ment to kill and that with a gurd is to protect. I remember watching a video saying that warriors who are going to battle use swords without guard to protect the hand because they are going to fight.
If I was told to pick a song for this scene, I would never, in a million years, think of this one. And yet, it works PERFECTLY.

The song is called Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa Esmerelda. It's a remix specifically done for the movie, so the only place to find this mix of it is on the official soundtrack.
MATTierial Darude Sandstorm
Brodey Jonason Enough, that meme is old.
It's spanish typical music, flamenco. Sooooo good😻😻
I love the way each character is taken out. Oren by a sword, Vernita by knife, Budd by a black mumba snake, Elle with her other eye taken out, and Bill with the Five palm technique.
I love the sound of the scabbard being cut in half.
Enough to edit this for the time stamp. 0:59
They are both one of the most dangerous women in the world and both very very skilled but there's one difference: Beatrix has the bigger will to win
0:24 - 0:37
O Ren Ishii: You are the most badass Blonde girl i ever see.
The Bride: I'll let go my rage
O Ren Ishii: then Allow me to cool Your Anger.
The Bride: all right, Come and try. Ren.
O Ren Ishii: Exactly where are you from. Bride.
Lucy Liu was born to play Oren. The part at 1:10 makes my bones chill.
This is one of the best fucking movie scenes eva!!! Combination of music and action....wow!!!!!
fucking love this scene and the song
This couldn't be a more perfect scene, I mean, in the beginning you see Uma Thurman fighting in a restaurant but then she opens the door and surprise...a typical japanse garden, snowing, perfect soundtrack, two great warriors facing each other in one of the most epic sword duels.
O-Ren is my absolute favorite of all the Deadly Viper's . . . her fight with Beatrix was the most built up (besides Bill) and by far the most satisfying
It's all fun until you realize it was harder than you thought and only then you take it seriously
This is really one of the best scene of Kill Bill!
Damnit, why couldn't THIS have been where the film ended.
Because it wouldn't have made sense. She's gonna win either way because she killed Vernita at the beginning.
FoxForever90
she killed oren in the begining
FoxForever90
then vernita
SuperImmunologist chronologically, yes she kills oren and then vernita. But in terms of how the story is told, you see her kill vernita first and then the story goes back to oren
Confusing. It took me a while to realize tarentino doesn't go by order.
Still one of my favorite scenes ever!! Especially the part where O-ren flips both sword and sheath?? With the swishing sound, she looked both menacing and beautiful. Plus this sooonnggg... been inside my ears for days, truly befitting for this scene!😭💕👌
This is my favorite part in the movie I love the scenery and she's gorgeous ❤
This is how strong female characters are written Hollywood
They seemed like friends due to the "silly rabbits" comment, and their short conversation kind of hints at the fact that they were closer than the others.
Oren-Ishii is so beautiful
Everybody gangsta till 👏👏👏 🪕🪕🪕 starts playing
I love Lucy Lui so much...she deserved to play as a villain
kudos to the director of this masterpiece very well written , this scene conveys a lot of emotion without a single word, especially that sword lift at 01:29 beautifully makes an impact
如夢如幻、如詩如畫、如聽青磬、如聞佛號、一弹指間已是三萬三千個刹那.....
真的想不到一個外國導演,竟可以将東洋武術拍出如此禪意來....令人佩服!!!
Useful to remember that Beatrix had fought to the edge of exhaustion already. She's running on pure adrenaline at this point. Vernita was supposedly the most skilled Viper with an edged weapon, but I always assumed that was more knives than anything else.
I must say, I find O-Ren to be stunningly beautiful, which is odd for me, because I don't normally find villainesses attractive at all.
bea detailed narrative about oren, subtle grief on both of their face as they fought, might be hint that at some point both of them were close friend
An excellent fight! Elegant and noble. After years of watching the movie, this is still the scene that I remember.
The music in this scene is like a Boss fight in a PlayStation game.
63 members of the Crazy 88 disliked their boss being beaten from beyond the grave.
Perfect scene, my favourite of the two films. Love the music as well
That is a kickass soundtrack to go along with this scene.
Sound track is life
I still think Tarantino should have had them engage a long kiss before they tried to kill each other.
+Cale Roy Wusere
That would've ruined the whole mood.
I want action and retribution not lesbian make out scenes.
XD
"Kiddo"
:)
One of my Fav. Lady Fight scenes EVER!!! PLUS the music just made it that much better !!!! "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" - Santa Esmeralda
O Ren makes Darth Vader look like a sissy.
She looks you in the eyes, lets you know what you're getting then comes up close and cuts you. No magic; just supreme skills and style.
The Bride did not really become REALLY badass until she beat O Ren.
Vader is different tho he senses ur fear and he uses it to beat u or turn u
Two kinds of Samurai sword is seens here, I just don't know what their specific names are.
But the one without a guard for the hand is a sword ment to kill and that with a gurd is to protect. I remember watching a video saying that warriors who are going to battle use swords without guard to protect the hand because they are going to fight.
God I miss great films!!!!
The music though!!! Just gets you into how they’re both feeling! Ya almost don’t know whose side you’re on!! 😂❤❤
Dear feminists: THIS is what a strong female character looks like. No need to steal any Ghostbusters costume.
Ouch.
Stfu. They were both assassin's how's that a strong female character.
1:07 “you spit on my Gucci bag”
You didnt think it was gonna be that easy did you.
Oliver Montoya Actually for a second there.....yeah I kind of did.
Tricks are for
Her fighting after getting cut in the back is like getting a whoopen and then going to school
