To be fair, these are children, in the range of 4-8 years old for our group. I wouldn't expect their rational thinking and planning skills to be the absolute best. Hey Matt! When I was taking a Psychology class in collage focused on mental illness and treatments, I did learn about insulin coma treatments. Sadly they were a real thing. They gave them an intentional overdose of insulin to put the person into a hypoglycemic seizure/coma for a short time and then woke them up with sugar under there tounge. The idea was to reset the brain by stopping all activity and then turning it back on again to reset the "bad" behavior or illness.
6:50 Honestly, can confirm this is how mental health assylum- I mean hospitals - treat their patients, even in the modern day. Did you actually see a leopard ? I've never met anyone who had an actual imaginary friend in that way. Kids would pretend, but they knew it was pretend. Was the leopard real for you? I'm so curious lol
Yo!! You're the first person I've ever seen whose imaginary friend only was summoned during car rides! Mine was a combination of yours and Ash's. It was me (like Ash's were copies of themself) riding a bike alongside the car (like yours), and I would navigate her through whatever terrain lied ahead to keep myself entertained. Ah, the days before mobile electronics! 😂
I am really happy you are playing this! I was one of the only two people that suggested this game on your reddit, so I doubted you would ever play it, but I am so happy that you did! I suggest you to continue it, the story becomes really good towards the mid-point (after a certain event I wont mention) and the ending is really, really great (and might give some interesting stuff for theories)!
As someone who was stuck in an awful mental institute as a young teen this is actually so accurate (aside from the heavy horror aspects of corse) It felt so lonely and obscure derelization, dissociation, and constant confusion was all all I could really allow myself to feel. Awful thing for anyone to go through, especially a child. I'm so grateful that modern medicine and physiological knowledge has evolved to the point it has today. I cant imagine how scary It must've been for anyone in the past.
I love this game so much. Although the witty banter part wondering how this game is based off of history is so funny because it's basically based off of things that have happened in history. Like it focused on things we know happened in and to asylums, but the characters and some of the story itself isn't from history. But I'm happy that MatPat finally played this game (This story makes me cry every time I watch a gameplay of it)
Hey mat my name's Louis I sat next to u tonight at your lie in April (I was the one with the pacman shirt) I just wanna say ur super cool and thank you for talking to us
Hearing Mat describe mental health like he did made me laugh, Ive always said peiple tend to use sarcasm like a sledgehammer when it should be used like a scalpel, so hearing him use those exact terms made my brain tingle a bit
When I was a young boy, I had an imaginary friend who was just a guy named Fred. Just a normal man. Whenever we went to a new house I would set up the closet as a portal for Fred to come through.
anyone going to mention that Edward says right when we meet him "Niccolo told me you will be rooming with us." so we know Niccolo has talked with the other kids.
In support of Ash's Niccolo theory, I think it's strange that he volunteers to be with us when we would otherwise be alone (like he, as the ghost, wants to get Anthony alone) & that Niccolo almost immediately mentions the ghost when meeting him (right after Niccolo realizes Tony can see imaginary friends). 25:21 Also, Niccolo mentions that he "knew" another kid like Anthony that something bad happened to after the same treatments? That being said, the game confirms that Niccolo does interact with the other kids when we first meet them so maybe not. Or maybe the ghost is Polo? On a different note, the tools on each person's bed seem like they may be symbolic somehow???
Ash encountered the Remnat Extractor and just couldn't resist the temptation to learn what soul essence tastes like which induced a hallucination so vibrant they accidentally ate the left arm of spring Bonnie, both of Freddy's ears, and gnaw on Foxy's hook for comfort before waking up with a sore stomach and aching jaw.
"Niccolo hasnt interacted with anyone" not them completely ignoring him and Edward talking to each other the day before when Anthony was still waking up
Also saying Smudge and Niccolo said the same thing isn't quite accurate either Niccolo was talking to us and realizing himself that Edward did it to stay here for his brother, while Smudge was comforting him about it, and without saying it reinforcing that his brother isn't going to leave him alone here
Thirdly, the nurse directly looks at and refers to Niccolo when talking about how some of their treatments are going incredibly slowly. I really like the theory, but you can't ignore the facts to fit the narrative, you have to make a narrative that fits the facts
And finally, the nurse when outside says you four, meaning that Niccolo is there and present, seeing as the nurses can't see the imaginary friends, and if they could then they would have said five or six if we're counting Polo, meaning that all four of the main characters are at least known by everyone there
I still think Niccolo could have something to do with the ghost, maybe helping it out or luring people into its traps or something, but I don't think he is the ghost himself
55:11 none of the above. The answer is -2 +/- 2i. If the 4 inside the sqrt was 4^2 instead (as it should be for the quadradic equation) then the answer would be -2 +/- i, but the way the question is written right now it's not an option.
Would love to see you play further, it's always fun to hear your thoughts and Ash's thoughts as we go through. I think Ash ate the slop from the cafeteria. And my imaginary friend would have long arms that drag on the floor and a snake like body.
As a girl, I watched a lot of Toonami, Jetix, Foxkids, and KidsWB. Man, TV used to be fun. Those special hours of TV just for kids, introducing anime to the world.
Hearing MatPat compare the concept of imaginary friends becoming real to "IF" makes me feel so old, because anytime I think of it, I can only think of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
So it wasn't an actual place. The place in the game doesn't exist. Obviously, mental health asylums existed, and they were very much like this during the time period displayed.
55:08 None of those answers are correct, although I think the intended answer was (-2 ± i). That would be the answer if this was a quadratic equation with a=1, b=4, and c=5. But in that equation, it would be 4² under the square root, but in this equation instead it's just 4. If you do the math as it is written it comes out to (-2 ± 2i), which is not an option, but is what Matpat correctly determined.
30:11 - "I've seen one of these stories before, *you're not supposed take pills* and the letters aren't going anyware." Me: *intense 'my eyes deceive' flashbacks*
When I was deciding what to do for the rest of my life, my initial desire was to be a chemical dependency counselor. I worked at a juvenile dual diagnosis (chemica/mental health) facility with children. The amount of kids there whose parents would not answer there calls when they were lonely, wouldn't come during the weekly visiting times, was heart-breaking. Some of the kids would sit looking out the window for a few hours those days, but then would receive no visitors. Usually they would have behavioral issues after that for a while, or be really sad. As far as becoming well-adapted, productive, non-addicted members of society most of the kids had slim to none. But will be held accountable for everything in mostly the same regard as anybody else. Of course we are all accountable for our actions, but it's definitely not fair how hard some people have to work to get to the same place some people get to start at. Anyway, I decided against pursuing that field because I wouldn't have been able to shrug off some of that stuff. Long story short this game reminds me of that time a little bit.
I swear this is the only channel that makes me constantly smile even when I'm having a bad day. I know they won't read this but thanks Ash and Matpat for everything
ironically there is place that is haunted where it was an asylum , children's hospital and nursing home where people brought in luggage expecting to keep it but it got tossed in a room never to be seen by the people.
Definitely continue playing this game! It has such a different take from the “psych ward troupe”. You’ll love it and the theorists will have a field day trying to guess the next game.
16:45 if you think back it was bad in ancient egypt they thought the heart did everything by making by pumping air to our muscle for it to move and they thought the brain was only used to protect our head from getting squished.
The only movie that I've watched of this theme: mental asylum of young children, with a dark twist; is Eli (I didn't like the movie, but this quickly reminded me of it). Also, the introduction of Anabelle Walker, an interaction from someone who knows things, strengthened the case for me as there's a similar character in the movie, played by Sadie Sink(the only character I liked).
Whoa! That fact that people still remember JetX is crazy!!! I loved to shows they had like "YIN YANG YO" AND "PUCCA". They even have this show about like this hero force idr what it was called but the characters is were like in a blocky 2d style. Anyways it was short lived. R.I.P. JetX
Woooooo!!! I'm actually excited for this episode! Didn't expect this game to pop up on the GTLive Radar! :D also yes this game has some semi-realism when it comes to mental asylum/institutional living back in the 1800-1900s, since we all know that those places had no care for their patients and staff alike :) (/stressed smiley)

30:37 You can call him whatever you want, but that my friends, is Bitter Giggle!
As a girl, I watched a lot of Toonami, Jetix, Foxkids, and KidsWB. Man, TV used to be fun. Those special hours of TV just for kids, introducing anime to the world.
You would love the book, “A danger to herself and others” it’s like EXACTLY what you described about a good plot😂
Y’all would like Greener Grass Awaits, a totally normal golfing game with nothing going on at all
sounds legit
man i love completely ordinary golf games
Ash, the channel was Jetix, im glad anyone remembers it, it aired in Poland too
Hearing MatPat compare the concept of imaginary friends becoming real to "IF" makes me feel so old, because anytime I think of it, I can only think of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
It's weird watching this knowing I saw Matpat and Dawko in London on Tuesday. Gotta say was a fun night seeing Your Lie in April still!
"Imaginary Friend Asylum" is the prequel to the original game "The Friends We Left Behind".
I think Santi is to blame for Ash's stomach problems.
Just a gut feeling
This was an actual place, just with a different name. A women burned it down, there just wasn't many details
So it wasn't an actual place. The place in the game doesn't exist. Obviously, mental health asylums existed, and they were very much like this during the time period displayed.
Ash talking about 7th grade history made me have flash backs to the Silk Road lessons they taught 😂😂😂
The Ad timing on this one lol. Mat: serious brain talk "the problem-" Mint mobile!
I laughed so hard cos it was seamless
55:08 None of those answers are correct, although I think the intended answer was (-2 ± i). That would be the answer if this was a quadratic equation with a=1, b=4, and c=5. But in that equation, it would be 4² under the square root, but in this equation instead it's just 4. If you do the math as it is written it comes out to (-2 ± 2i), which is not an option, but is what Matpat correctly determined.
Yeah I wonder if it was intentional that none of the answers were correct so that the teacher could scold them regardless.
Holy help I have been obsessed with this game and absolutely love it. It's awesome seeing you play it and I'm sure the creators are happy to.
I think Ash consumed some fruitflies and some expired milk.
im really invested in the story and really want a part 2
i love the witty banter involving power rangers about a game involving asylums and probably hallucinating godlike creatures
30:11 - "I've seen one of these stories before, *you're not supposed take pills* and the letters aren't going anyware."
Me: *intense 'my eyes deceive' flashbacks*
I’ve been WAITING for more of this game :3
Long story short this game reminds me of that time a little bit.
just got home from seeing matpat in London for Your Lie in April, now i get more matpat content!
I played this game at my friends house, and i like the story cant wait to see Mat play more
Did Matt and Ash forget about the nurse that yelled at them and Niccolo a minute ago before saying their theory?
I swear this is the only channel that makes me constantly smile even when I'm having a bad day. I know they won't read this but thanks Ash and Matpat for everything
Ash definitely consumed 8 whole avocados without peeling the skin off 👍
ironically there is place that is haunted where it was an asylum , children's hospital and nursing home where people brought in luggage expecting to keep it but it got tossed in a room never to be seen by the people.
OH MY GOSH HE’S PLAYING IT!!! THIS JUST MADE MY DAY
44:40 a good movie that has the twist he is talking about is "A Beutiful Mind". I had to watch it in psychology and it was very interesting
Nicollo can't be a ghost because the nurse saw both of them outside of the room
Yall… the nurse just said “WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING OUT HERE” so, canonically, Niccolo is visible 1:04:02
or the nurse sees Polo and is just like "purple guy that is sassy af and looks abnormal? yeah, that's a child."
I feel like Ash is the type of person to eat sponges, especially the double-sided ones.
I feel that Ash consumed some 2 day old gas station sushi..........
I love the voices that Mat gave to the imaginary friends
Ash got flashbacks from the roman numerals of TNMN
tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, TIME! tick, toxk, tick, tock, tick, tock TIME!
I wonder if she would have accused you of cheating if you got it [the math problem] right
Other people: "the ghost could be x paranormal thing"
My dumb brain: In all likelihood, the "ghost" is just the doctor who took an interest in you earlier and was probably more focused on Annabel up until you arrived.
I think the twist is that Anthony is the ghost. It's an oldy but a goody.
I’d love it if this game was continued! I’m also really intrigued by what’s going on in the Asylum!
Okay, if you don’t play more, I will cry, BECAUSE THIS IS FRICKING AWSOME
I'm so glad this game is finally getting recognition!
