Star Wars: X-Wing (PC/DOS) 1993, LucasArts

- X-Wing is a space combat simulation, the first in the Star Wars universe. From the cockpits of X-Wing, Y-Wing and A-Wing starfighters, players fight for the Rebel Alliance in their struggle against the evil Galactic Empire.
Unlike earlier titles in the genre like Wing Commander, X-Wing employs a polygonal 3D engine: flat-shaded polygons are combined with bitmaps only for explosion effects.
The game features a comprehensive training element. Before starting on real missions, players should navigate the pilot proving grounds, also known as 'Maze', by flying through a course of doorways set atop platforms in space, preferably without missing any, all while keeping an eye on the tight time limit. Higher levels add additional challenges like hostile laser turrets. Next to the 'Maze', there are simulated historical missions (six for each of the three fighters) that prepare for the complex missions in the rest of the game.
The main part of the game consists of three separate campaigns, called Tours of Duty. The Tours can be played in any order, even though they build on each other story-wise: Tour I, 'A New Ally', tells of the Rebellion's search for political allies in their fight against the Empire, while the Emperor launches Operation Strike Fear, a major offensive against the Rebels. Tour II, 'The Great Search' chronicles the Rebels' search for the plans to the Empire's new superweapon, the Death Star. Tour III, 'The Gathering Storm', tells of their efforts to find and destroy the battle station. Animated cutscenes are featured after certain missions to continue the story.
Each Tour consists of around a dozen missions, which include a wide variety of objectives. There are standard strike, escort and defense assignments, but also reconnaissance flights - just scanning ships without attacking them - or capture operations - disabling enemy ships, then protecting the transport carrying the strike team during the takeover. The game of course culminates in the famous attack on the Death Star.
The three flyable fighters all handle differently and are thus more or less suitable for the different types of missions. The X-Wing is heavily armed and armored, and is usually used on strike missions. The Y-Wing is slower and less well protected, but is the only ship equipped with ion cannons, necessary for disabling ships. With its high speed and maneuverability, the A-Wing is ideal for recon and intercept missions.
Next to lasers and ion cannons, the fighters are armed with limited amounts of warheads: proton torpedoes are slow and highly destructive, while concussion missiles are faster, but yield less damage.
A unique feature of the game is energy management: Energy must be divided between engines, weapons and shields. At the standard settings, weapons and shields don't recharge - energy must be diverted from the engines for that, slowing the ship. On the other hand, putting more power into the engines adds speed, but drains shields and guns. Energy can also be transferred between the systems, boosting weapons power at the expense of shields or vice versa.
Space is populated by many ships besides the player's, most of which are well-known from the movies. The Empire will usually launch waves of TIE Fighters, Interceptors and Bombers from Star Destroyers. The Rebels employ large Mon Calamari cruisers and Corellian Corvettes. In use by both sides are Nebulon-B escort frigates and Lambda-class shuttles. Some ships not seen in the movies include the Imperial assault gunboat, the stormtrooper transport and bulk freighters. Friendly fighters will sometimes accompany the player, and can be given specific orders. - Ігри
This was absolutely awesome for 1993.
@@tth547 couldnt agree more - the new ea battlefrontshit stands nothing comparing to this beautifull combat master oriented game. I do not understand this trend - make something graphically great and simplified as fck. You know - a simulator with his complex logic and management requires high concentration and thinking in tough battle, against shoot by fly scenario with no real challenge. Seriously, kids, really??? Really you like that shit more than this???
Star Wars, Descent, Wing Commander, Star Lancer, Starflight. Among the best space game of the decade
I remember playing this on my like 66 Mhz computer as a kid...a few years later we got a 300 Mhz computer and on that this game played in like 60 fps and was even more awesome
@@ivanius5255 “simplified as fuck” bro have you even played battlefront 2?
Yes this game eas a gift
My brother and I would play this together at the same time. I handled all of the keyboard controls like shields, engines, communications, weapons, etc., and he piloted the ships with the joystick. Our goal was to get the max score possible each mission, and any time we encountered a Star Destroyer, we'd fight every Tie Fighter wave (52 fighters total), then take on the Star Destroyer no matter what ship we were flying. It was a great challenge, and very fun! X-Wing and Tie Fighter are my favorite space flight sims of all time!
we used to do the same thing with my brother. One handles shield and weapon controls and the other the flying. And we'd switch roles. These two games (X-Wing, Tie Fighter) still stand as two of the best games I have ever played. Their magic was never recaptured, even with Xwing vs Tie and with Xwing Alliance. The only other games which came close were the Wing Commander Series and Privateer.
@@Evghenios79 Wing Commander was actually 3 years older than X-Wing. WC revolutionized how space battle sims were done, and X-Wing draws inspiration from it. WC also had a speech pack similar to X-Wing, except it was separate from the main release while WC2 contained the speech files in the main game.
That's interesting .. I used to pile drive my brother nearly breaking his neck just so I could play alone without him breathing down my neck 🤣
@@raedius_music We played it like pilot and co-pilot basically. It was a lot of fun.
I totally understand! When ever there is a Star Destroyer in any mission, I MUST take it out before I jump back to base. I still remember gotta take out the two spheres on the top to lower its shields first... It really was a challenge back then to do so!
This game should be remastered with 21st century graphics :D
I agree. I grew up loving this game. I played it all the time
Can somebody tell George Lucas about this?
@@UltimateCefiro It is. Look up the project. It's with an Unreal engine I believe. It's amazeballs
Can we please stop with the remakes just leave it alone
I dunno, the pixel art looks amazing.
Played this all of Summer-Fall 1994... I didn't have a sound blaster back then so only today am I hearing the sound and music for the first time ever...
The soundtrack for both this and Tie Fighter were awesome.
My childhood right here. Balancing energy demands, commanding squad mates to intercept or protect targets, and taking on capital ships with a measly number of torps. Just sensational gaming.
I played this sooooo much back in the day, and the superior Tie Fighter. Superb games.
Loved this game as a kid. Thank you for posting.
I remember playing this game as a kid, too. My dad had this big old grey PC and we need dozens of these floppys for installation... Good old times.
The original X-wing and Tie fighter were my favorite space sims of all time. They just had the perfect formula. Felt very immersive.
Wing Commander series wins it for me and I never grew up with either! They're pretty much the only two PC space sim games you can introduce to a modern gamer and (if they can look beyond graphics and just focus on gameplay) can actually enjoy.
All those in favor of the above named games being reissued for current console systems, signify your assent by smashing the like button.
I just received this in the mail from an EBay purchase (complete big box 3.5 disks version) I used to play the collector's edition CD-Rom version for hours on end on my Packard Bell. I used a flight stick to play & for my 12 year old brain, it felt like an authentic X-Wing flight simulation. Oh how I loved this game!! Still do & will be playing it yet again later tonight.
Hahaaaa those MIDI sounds! Wow look how far gaming has jumped in 30 years.
I played this one. Loved it.
I remember using a 3/5 floppy disk to save my pilot in all missions. That helped me to retire as General because if Ties shoot down your ship in a mission and you were captured you lost the rank
I remember too
Back in 1993, when we had this game, its Empire equivalent TIE Fighter, Sam & Max Hit The Road and Day of the Tentacle!
I still have the box of this game with all the manuals giving you every piece of information possible, thanks for the upload!
Don't get me wrong, I love X-wing CD...but nothing beats the nostalgia of the original disk version, and the simplicity of its explosions and laser sounds. This clip brings me right back to playing it in my friend's older brother's backyard trailer in the spring of '94.
Dude...we'll never get that back =( I even went as far as wanting to build a Win 95 machine to play that...Lol weird to feel nostalgic loading 5x 3 1/2 inch floppies then flipping through the manual for the code word to prove you're not an Imperial spy xD
This game is begging to be remastered tho.
Ahh I love to hear that DOS sound blaster music 😍
This was a HHUUGE Part of my childhood, I'm talking from 5-6 years old, and played it for Years. I didn't understand most of what was being said (I didn't speak English, Yet), but I did work out that If I could target those missiles, I could shoot those missiles out of the air (or space :P ). 46:59
And to lead my targets in general.
OOFF, the jumps in and out of hyperspace.... It's so Awesome seeing a Nebulon-B frigate dropping out of hyperspace and into battle, unannounced.
Oh, And unless you know what you are dodging, don't go anywhere near those Star Destroyers and Nebulon-B Frigates.
Don't go to their escorts, let the escorts come to you.
I remember this game as a 13 year old kid. I remember finding this game very hard to master and never came far. Still loved it though. 😁👌🏾
such a beautifful game. I remember staying up til 1 am as a shorty with this and tie fighter.
This was a thousand hours of my childhood! ;) Sweet memories... ;)
The dynamic soundtrack in this game was so damn cool, i loved that the score reflected what was going on in the action!
Man that training mission goes on for fking ever.
Wow I loved this game when I was 13 in 1993!
Man, they never made a Star Wars simulator as good as this and Tie Fighter...... And the way the gaming industry progressed, they never will.....
I don't think I ever played TIE Fighter
@@andrewmah2962 It's basically the same as X Wing, except you're an Imperial, soundtrack is even better, and you can match speeds
Omg! Hours spent playing this and tie fighter. We need these again!
I loved this game...it was a time when games were actually good and detailed no updates no buying dlc you just loaded it up and away you went!
There actually were DLC's (downloadable via modem or diskettes) updates, patches, addons for DOS games ect. like for X-wing the B-Wing addon and Imperial Pursuit! At that part nothing has changed.
@@thriftweeds they made really good games back then the graphics in games nowadays are amazing but back then there was imagination I don't know there was something different about the way you could play them.
Firing missiles when they are not locked, Not using Targeting mode until 39:05 but then just for less than a minute, constantly switching targets with no plan it seems, being fooled by the small TIEs drawing you away from the real battleground so the bombers can just do their things, not using the function "Target Ahead" at all.
Thanks for making me relive this great game, but Incredibly frustrating to watch. :D
This game was extremely playable. The controls had a high degree of customization. Modern games don't have the same level of control. I'd rather play this game than most current ones despite the better graphics.
You try star wars squadrons yet?
Yay, the time when computing gaming was actually a hobby and you had to "work" to get good at a playing a game. No quick 10 minute gaming sessions, but hours in your bedroom with the PC getting involved in another world :)
Oh, and the BOOKS! They practically gave you an entire novel to immerse you in the lore instead of just basic instructions on a couple of sheets...
1994, i played it on Windows 3.0 (16 bit ?),
at that time, there was no i -Phone 😁.
Oh the game that made me buy a SB16 sound card :D
My computer back then was an absolute beast. DOS 6.22, 486 DX/2 90mhz, 30mb hard drive, Sound Blaster Pro. I always saw the SB Pro as being a top of the line card. At some point I think I got the Voodoo card for it as well. Way back before it became a DX/2, I was going to upgrade to the SX chip, but I read how some games coming out was going to require the DX chip, so I went with that instead, and so glad I did.
Also in this mission, all you need to do is set engines to max, almost no shields, and minimal lasers. The point of this mission is to get through the gates as fast as possible. When you start messing around with engines, lasers and shields mid-mission, you're just asking for trouble.
These graphics/art must have been mind blowing. I love watching DOS games, the standards were 100x home console standards.
This was the bridge keeping the Star Wars hype train going through the 90s ‘til the Second Trilogy, yo!!!
Came here for the “you must register” “YOU MUST REGISTER”
@mettaworldwill Get to da choppa
I loved X-wing and TIE fighter both. And the add-ons. Great games! It would be awesome to have a refresh.
Ahhh, simpler days of Star Wars fandom. When Star Wars was just the three films and A New Hope was simply called Star Wars.
This game is the best game I ever played.
I was in Okinawa in '93. I made supreme commander. I was actually flying on P-3C Orians at the time and it kept me alert for the ready one.
and then star wars squadrons came out, and broke all our hearts.
I remember me and my cousin got this game and we would play it together while sitting on one giant chair using a joystick to steer. so fun!
Who's here after Squadrons got announced
Right here! Looks like they kept the same mechanics, too.
Well, this year is 1993 and it look kind a nice to play it on Nintendo.
Actually, I am here after finishing the single player Story Mode on Squadrons. It's such a great experience especially with VR.
@@A_friend_called_Five I can imagine, unfortunately I don't have vr :/
I'll still gonna get the game in a sale though
Holy moly I'm a junior in high school all over again!
I was 7 years old when this came out
So many memories! Thanks for posting!
This game (and Tie Fighter) were my favorite two video games growing up.
May The Force Be With You In Star Wars X-Wing!
I was never a Star Wars fan, but I played the bejesus out of this back in the day!
After this game, I didn’t want anything more from a SW game.
This was perfect.
A tad difficult - but even that felt right - saving the galaxy is no eazy pickin’!
Loved that game. Not 100% sure, but I think it was my first FP space battle game.
Loved this game as a kid in the 90s! As well as Dark Forces, and Dark Forces 2. They put out some solid games out back then! Thanks for posting, brings back some rad memories!
Loved it, one of the best games ever.
I loved this game so much, I played it on PC 486 for long time, even if I didn't know English only few words, so sometimes it was hard to figure out what to do yet I beat many missions and I loved the medal system I always tried to get as many rewards as I can get. A-wing was my big favorite. I remember for long time, I had no idea I can switch energy to shield, weapons or engine so many times I died because of that, but later I got better, however I still never figured out how to beat the last mission on the Death Star.
amazing game I played as a child,
I still have this game in the box
Aside from Commander Keen, Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter, and Goodbye Galaxy, this was my fav game of all time. There was a Win.X port later on, but the response time, for Keen too, was different. Almost like being there. Great video.
Legendary Game😍
Man, I loved this game! The sound effects and graphics were top notch at this time. You cannot imagine how it was to play the usual „sprites and pixel“-games, and then playing this beauty…it played much smoother than the direct competitor „Wing Commander“ and transported the „Star Wars“-feeling very well.
…long time ago…
…I guess I am getting old…😢
P.S.: I would have skipped the training part and showed more of the later levels, including the Star Destroyer trench run…
Shift F10 for your shields. You might have lasted next to that Star Destroyer.
Thank you for your service major. I remember fighting with you in 92 in a voodoo war against a ghost pirate. Lots of screaming and dead end carnival rides.
I used to smoke massive bong hits and play this. It was ahead of its time. Took me months to blow up the Death Star but worth it. Thx for posting.
Can't blow up the Death Star if you hit the bong...
Apparently you forgot bong rips enhance force related abilities.
I had this game but no sound card. Imagine the horror.
I remember having a demo of this game as a teen, I played it for a long time
I could swear that the audio track sounded better at 1993 :D
oh man..... the memories......
Played this over at my buddies house nonstop in 93/94. No sound
love that Soundblaster chip
Lawrence Holland's masterpiece!
Ugh that star destroyer theme played out on dos audio is so so so good
I spent equal time playing and watching my brother play this game. I can't count how many Kmart joysticks we went through. I was legit terrified by the death cut scenes out the scary capture one
I recall moving up from "Wing Commander" to "X-Wing" just to see what Lucas Arts did that Origin hadn't. It was challenging, no matter which Rebel Alliance fighter you flew against the Galactic Empire. As for the legions of TIE fighters, they didn't have the individual character of the cats of the Kilrathi Empire, but it did seem as if you faced 10:1 odds all the time. So, "Keyan Farlander's" tale sucked me into the "Star Wars" world.;)
Best friend of mine would fly, Id do the keyboard, rotating targets, shields, weapons, targeting etc... Soooooo much fun.
I used to absolutely love playing this game.
On a jamais fait mieux ❤regardez les trajectoires des vaisseaux au top
Comme dans les films
great memories. best game. star wars 4 life
Nostalgic
yes it is.....i love this game very much!! play it over n over and master it......
Pro Tip. Bump up your Lasers one notch and Shields down one notch. You'll maintain the same speed and gain some cannon energy which, if you get more accurate in your shooting (less shots) can outpace the shield loss. Just dump laser energy into shields when they lasers get near topping out.
My favourite space game after Starflight !!
amazing fame this one was... and tie fighter... and still are! :)
I met Mark Hamill when this game was released
군대 제대하고 복학하기 전 남는 시간 x-wing 정말 즐거웠다.
그때 부셔버린 조이스틱이 십여개는 됐는데...😂
I remember my dad helping me boot this game up in DOS. This game turned me into the middle-aged nerd I am today. How did they pull off the simulation with no 3dfx or GPUs???
How many years i play this amazing games is like a gift from george lucas 👍👍👍
I forgot how fuckin rad the FM synth version of the star wars theme is
This looks incredible for 1993
Still my favorite video game ever
Would love a remake of this. Same concept just improved graphics like in squadrons.
You had the midi music, which unlike the Win 95 version changed with game play, but did not have the voices. I remember Ackbar talking to you.
What was great about this version is that it was the birth of the internet and GO City had legions of Star Wars fans who had their own websites with walk thoughs and hints for this game as well as downloadable programs to alter your ships and even create totally new missions. Someone even mad a L-Wing to fly in the game. I really miss those days. The Win 95 version only allowed you to use the mission editor to make and play new missions. I had some really decked out ships.
I miss this game.
When I first played this, I didn't know the energy has to be set higher than 1/2 to actually regenrate the weapons and shields. So I had to get really good at taking down the targets with a single shot. But eventually, I always got shot down by the turrets.
Speaking as an imperial pilot with combat experience (tie fighter collectors edition). I found every rebellion craft super easy to shoot down WITH THE EXCEPTION TO the a wing. Super agile and annoying to lock onto!! X wings, B wings, Y wings were cannon fodder
I should be playing this during quarrantine
So much fun on my IBM 486DX50 . Bought a soundblaster and it wasted half of my year at school !😆But now i’m to ready to attack the death star if needed.
such a very good game ! so hard to do for some mission and addons. Works well even today (GOG games...), never left my computer as TIE fighter
Used to make several copies of my pilot and use them as copilots, no worry if died.
Yeah cool stuff. All generals my wingies
played this game 2002-03!
I was one of the guys that played this game on a system without a joystick - so I had to use the mouse as steering wheel... At least, I made it!
This would sound even better with a proper sound card.
Captain Guybrush, that's genius. :D
Somehow the (8-bit?) technology really suits the Star Wars theme.
I remember the graphics to be way better.
It was fun, I use to do space spins
I wish they would just take this game make it look better and re-release it because this was a perfict game.
Some good people are upgrading this.
XWVM - X-Wing Virtual machine. Should have VR support too.
