  • Joby Carter created the design for Jools Holland's album cover: Pianola: Piano and friends which features block lettering with a shadow. Joby was asked whether this was done by eye... in this video he explains a bit more.

Where are the 'tips' then? Nothing in this video offers tips on placing shadows!
Other than a bit of name dropping, there's nothing at all to see here.

Thanks for watching. This was intended as a short video in answer to someone's question about specific artwork I had created so you're right that it doesn't go into lots of technique. I am planning on a more in depth video all about shadows as I know people can struggle. Was there anything in particular you'd like me to cover or include?

@@Joby.Carter Thanks for the reply. Odd that you didn't mention that in the title nor in the video itself...
I'm an accomplished signwriter and airbrush artist so, without trying to sound like I know it all, I don't, there's nothing I really need regards shadows.
I usually try to adjust the spacing to ensure shadows don't run into adjacent letters, that and ensuring the shadow depth is not so great as to butt up to neighbouring letters helps in most cases.
A basic understanding of perspective and vanishing points is key and easily learned.
      Lots of practice...
I'll look forward to your more in depth video
