How To Make Chai Tea | Indian Tea

  • I've been both praised and cursed for my tea. Praised because it always tastes so good, cursed because it's so strong that my tea drinkers are usually up until the wee hours of the morning, tossing and turning because they can't sleep. So with caution and fair warning, here's my tea recipe (which is a combination of tea recipes from my sister in law and a couple of close friends):
    2-4 cups of water
    5-8 peppercorns
    2-3 crushed green cardamom
    3-6 cloves
1 cinnamon stick or a generous sprinkle of cinnamon powder
2 teaspoons of loose black tea
2 tablespoons of brown sugar or more or less of your desired sweetener
3 tablespoons of heavy cream or similar creamer
Add all spices (not tea, sugar or cream) to a pot of water. Bring to a boil. Cover and let simmer for as long as you'd like (sometimes I give it 5 minutes, other times, I put it on the lowest flame and leave it for 30 minutes or more while I do something else). Add tea and cover. Remove from heat and let it steep for 3-5 minutes. Next, add cream and sugar and bring back up to a boil. Reduce heat and let it simmer for a couple minutes. Using a strainer, pour into a cup and enjoy!
You can get creative with your chai! Some people like a bit of fresh ginger as well. You can also make this tea with tea bags. In my experience, you need more tea bags than typical to get the desired strength and color.

I made this tea and it is SO good. Whole family loved it :) I only simmered the spices and water for around five or ten minutes and the flavour was still perfect. I added 2 star anises, which gave it a nice kick of flavour, too. Thank you!

did you add 2 WHOLE star anise? Or just 2 of the little pieces/blades off of a star anise? I like star anise in my tea also, but its either I use not enough or way too much! ;]

Ok so I don't even like tea, not even sweet tea and I live in Florida (my boyfriend thinks I'm crazy). I only enjoy chai tea, and even then I'm super picky. I've been searching for a good chai tea recipe, and holy cow this is the one. It's soooo good! I used whole milk instead of heavy cream, but I bet it's even better with heavy cream. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for this tutorial👏. I have been really craving chai tea but can't purchase at coffee shop as it's LOADED with sugar - I have an issue with glucose levels.
I followed this recipe and left out the sugar other than about a quarter teaspoon of raw honey. (I also used English breakfast tea so will be buying loose leaf black tea)
It is delicious and I can't wait to make it for friends😋
    Again, thanks so much.

You didn't add ginger, in India we always add ginger either dried ginger powder or freshly crushed ginger along with the spices.
We drink herbal tea also by adding Ashwagandha( Indian ginseng),
Mulethi (licorice) Tulsi ( Holy Basil) along with the above mentioned spices, instead of sugar , in southern India Karupatti ( palm jaggery ) is added

Awesome, it looks delicious. 😊 just for the sake of sharing information ; word " Chai" and " tea " are both originally chinese words for the green herb that we know and use . Chai word was used in south china and in that name then it became pupolar in Asia and in north China it was called a name close to tea and then it became papular as tea in Europe and west . So both tea and Chai is the name of same herb . 🌿 The tea drink is made differently in different places and Chai masala is a great warm drink. Thanks for the video ❤.
