A brilliant and very instructive game! I have to say that I particularly love those "How would *you* play in this situation?" moments. It just makes you feel good if you actually manage to find those incredible moves like the masters did. And if not, having spent at least some time figuring it out without success just underlines the point and makes the moves look even more impressive.
Although we are usually most impressed by those games where a dynamic attack has raged across the board, personally I have always been more stimulated by amazing creative defence. This game is of high example!
Just as you said, an absolutely sensational defensive performance by MVL. The star move of this game among many was Be7, defending the f6 square and putting a hold on white's attack for just long enough to create sufficient counterplay and well deserved advancement to the knockout stage. A good ferocious attack is always impressive, but a brilliant defense like this is just something else. It's these quiet super GM moves that make chess look even more inspiring.
Have learned so much about strategy and making plans from your videos, Daniel. They are more entertaining and faster than finding nuggets of practical strategy ideas in books.

Very dynamic play! I need to bring some of Mamedyarov's ideas to my boring QG repertoire. Thanks for posting and providing such a thought provoking commentary.
The situation in Ukraine is very upsetting. Thanks for your videos, it kinda helps me to just watch 'silly chess videos' instead of pressing f5 on news sites. Great game and great analysis as always.
I don't really think like that. I just enjoy the chess and the stories of players. I grew up in the era of Fischer and Spassky so they hold a certain fascination (do check out the playlists on this channel!). Tal, Geller, Korchnoi... off the top of my head. So many great current players it is impossible to choose!
Like Kortchnoï Maxime likes to invite his opponents to over extend themselves. They get drunk on their attacking chances and then he finds a refutation.
The Grünfeld is riskier and MVL has been focusing lately on a slightly more solid game especially improving his defense. You can't go all the way to the top of Chess Mountain by always playing such forcing and risky openings, especially as younger, fresh and tactically razor sharp talents are trying to overtake you.
I take it that sacrificing the white bishop for the pawns in front of the black king before white can start his counter does not lead to anything better than perpetual check?

Thanks for the comment. I'll try to include these in future.

Great defence from V-L, but amazing creative attacking play from Mamedyarov too.

Very nice game :)
Hi Daniel, just curious who is your favorite player? Or players? You’ve covered so many legends.

Yehh interesting game!!
That middlegame position with opposite colored bishops looked similar to a dangerous pawn sacrifice line in Sicilian Najdorf
MVL IS A BEAST

How on earth MVL didn't play the Grunfeld?
