He was created in the late 80s when a Fong shading experiment went terribly wrong, merging galactic consciousness with the theory of extrapolated extra dimensionality creating a 3 dimensional entity out of 2D space. That entity, having been hewn from the raw ether, possessed an understanding of the building blocks of the 3D universe and became as a living god. Or maybe that was Watchmen. Anyway, he's nifty.

@Daniel W This guy spent YEARS on that project though. That is in no way saying he isn't "better", but you really can't compare a video that was made anywhere from 3 days to a couple of weeks, and a fully developed multi-year project

Yup, I like more when they react to good CGI rather than bad.
Right?? It's made up of highlights, from the scenes, to the guests, the random dude joining behind the couch, them deciding to call Ian on the spot, best episode in a while.
@@spooksboots the call to Ian was probably pre planned because Ian's webcam was recording, but also calling people like that with no warning is generally just a dickish thing to do

I would love to see a full breakdown of Thor Ragnarok, particularly the scene where Ragnarok has begun and Asgard is being destroyed. The fire is gorgeous.
Ian could be a Hollywood director in a couple of years time, and I would support that 1000%
People and creatives that actually create the tech, environments, lighting, graphics, and other "behind the scenes" stuff, do not receive enough attention and appreciation. Forget "Best Actor", this is what should be highlighted.

I’ve been wondering about how 3D environments are made to look so realistic and I didn’t realize how much good lighting plays a part in it. 👍🏼
Edit: I’m more referring to how 3D environments are made to look real over CGI humans and animals. I always thought that the environments would kinda be an after thought in the process but it’s way more important than I ever coulda thought.
The difference is like night and day! *cough*
Photorealistic basically a technology you scan real environment in high resolution then mask that image into engine to convert it into 3d now most photographers use 360 cameras for that so it gets more easy unreal engine is really cool engine to play with and its assets store is one the best

@@SoftnappGAMEPLAY nah it's good if it's a real environment but there's a limit, it gets harder when you're trying to make an imaginary environment look realistic, it's not that simple. Like in Ian hubert's environment, most of the stuff was built from the ground up or mixed from diff sources, that's where the artist's vision comes in

It kind of warms my heart to see the interconnectivity of departments in the Mandalorian, the fact that preproduction can work with the cinematographer and the visual effects department is exactly how film sets should work
I still can’t believe they haven’t done anything for the Planet of The Apes reboot movies, The CGI in those films is just incredible...

The development of this project reminds me of the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which started as one guy (Kerry Conran) spending four years making a six-minute black-and-white short on a Macintosh IIci. The final film was the first major motion picture that was shot entirely on blue-screen with CGI backgrounds.
Thanks to Felix for taking the time to do this, its awesome to hear insight from someone who worked on the actual scenes.
Ian's work is incredible, and his how-to videos and behind the scenes stuff is illuminating and extremely helpful
I think it’d be cool to see y’all react to “The Day After Tomorrow” specifically the major flood scene of New York with the water wall moving through the city and all that.
that whole scene is practically a water physics simulation, not much to it other than having water flow through a blocked plane in an editing software and then just animated it reacting to cars, people, signs etc

The most exciting thing about "The Volume" and it's use on The Mandalorian is the fact that it's an amazing leap forward in the future of film production. I'm excited to see where this tech goes and how it develops even further.

It's always so wholesome seeing all the breathtaking shots they show, the breakdown behind the magic of making those shots and the passion and knowledge they show while talking about it. Those moments where they geek out about a certain shot or the technical brilliance of it, those are my personal favorite parts of the episodes. That's the dream right there. To be making a living doing something that you're that passionate about. Cheers guys!

Yo Ian! Thanks for your blender tutorials. I got a job thanks to you, lost it thanks to Covid. Those were great 3 years working as a 3D Generalist.
The LED screen vs green screen is awesome because the actors can feel like they’re actually in that environment instead of just having to guess or pretend.

Yeah that one is not for kids. I actually liked it though, it's not as polished looking, but it's more book accurate, and to me a more interesting story.

I think he missed the point, but Wren got it right. Even the faces are kinda resembling a human face to have the performance closer to what the actors did. I liked it more than Jungle Book.
I actually liked it, I admit it's uncanny and non realistic. But if you forgive it, the emotion sells the story way better than Jungle Book does.

Could we see a react to those kinda off dogs from “Cruella,” and Emma Stone’s incredibly unconvincing splash down at the end of that friggin’ movie? There was some off CG in that movie.

I think the most amazing thing about Ian is how he comes up with his own solutions. A lot of things that people in "traditional" studios would probably be discouraged from even trying. At least that's the vibe I get from following him all those years.

I remember finding these lazy tutorials a year ago, and thinking "this is neat, I wonder what's who made them is working on as a day job"
I actually thought the human eyes on the animals interesting, it was something that I hadn't really seen before combined with excellent animation and lighting.
It was... different, and that's part of why the Andy Serkis version of the movie stood out to me in an unusual yet interesting way.
The Andy Serkis movie is actually more faithful to the original Jungle book's story than the Disney versions. Which I suppose adds to it feeling more disconcerting, since it isn't as familiar and nostalgic to most people who grew up loving disney movies. But I think its still a great movie, just don't go in expecting your typical family-friendly singing animals.
When the genius of digital and practical effects experts combines that's when you start getting some crazy shit

Can we talk about how Aslan in 2005 showed more emotion than Mufasa in 2019?
Favreau for some reason wanted realism over style in a film where animals talk and have a structured society. The movie's garbage, for that kind of stuff animation is way better, be it 2D, 3D or even stop motion, imagine how bad fantastic mr. fox would be if it was realistic CG. The Lion King (2019) is literally a tech demo and proof of concept for Mando and future stuff that uses that tech.

@@PASTRAMIKick The cinematography in the CGI movie in some parts also look way less dynamic and interesting. Like when Simba returns at the end. In the original movie, the camera zooms in fast on him while great fire and lightning effects are playing around him, while in the new movie they just show him in a stable, still shot with some lightning I think.

It's jarring to see all of a sudden but I think you'd get used to it pretty quickly.
Plus, Serkis was going for a more anthropomorphized vibe.
An episode dedicated to walking with the dinos (or/and the spin-off shows) would be nice. There's some really great stuff there, especially considering when they were made.
Robin Williams "What dreams may come" has some unique practical and CG effects.

Ian Hubert is my personal hero along with Blender Guru when it comes to 3D modelling. I learned the Blender basics and many complex stuff from Guru and some others.
Then I discover Ian and my eyes were opened to how much easier some stuff can be made and still achieve good quality.
The repeating road with cars and lampposts blew my teacher's mind away.
The current cutting edge of virtual production (ie The Mandalorian pipeline described in this video) gives me the tingles. SO cool.
Ian is a legend. People who haven't watched his Lazy tutorials, go do that now. It's insane.

I remember, maybe I'm wrong, that they did use very big puppet for the face close ups but maybe they replaced it with CGI anyway and it was more about getting the correct movements.

As far as I remember they made the amazing animatronic but it took too long to get what they needed out of it so they probably scanned it and rigged a CG model and used that instead. I think it's mostly human motion capture too because the thing moves like a guy in a suit while still seeming so massive. Really incredible work and leagues better and more creative than the American "monsterverse" Godzilla imo

In Ien's video, the shot when she stands on an elevator and the camera moves around her is actually static, she just turns around and he matched the background. There are really cool vfx breakdowns of this vid

I love episodes like this. Sometimes these will be the guys just watching scenes and reacting with a few comments about the effects occasionally. And those are fine, still enjoyable. But this is just 100% in depth discussions the whole time. Good stuff.
You guys should react to CGI or stunts in some school-based movies like Ferris Bueler or Back to School to celebrate this awful school year for college and high school students being over.

Guys, do The Expanse! Great CG with the added interest of scenes trying to be “scientifically accurate” eg how fire works in zero gravity, space battles with accurate thrust physics etc.
If you are going to make a new “Stuntman react” video related to cars, you should definitely check the French Taxi movie franchise and the chases they have there. All the best to you guys!

You should react to different video game cutscenes
I love the fact that they have shared this tech and showed people it's a massive step forward for tv shows as well as movies to be honest.
From shooting entirely on location, through back projection, through mat paintings, through green/blue screen back to shooting with a back projection. And it's looking better than ever! I see this as an absolutely brilliant thing, possibly a future of moviemaking (in addition to on-location shoots) up until the point of CGI being so good it's actually indistinguishable from reality and able to be done in full-scale productions.
