Gisèle's beautiful, vindicated smile is a treasure. She's earned her rest. As for the defense lawyer saying those fifty rapists "weren't meant to be here," ridiculous. Those men walked into that bedroom fully conscious, of their own free will. They made their choice, and they deserve to be held accountable.

Yes I agree. The French judicial system has a habit of giving light sentences regardless of the crime, with many of them being “suspended”. So many perpetrators don’t face adequate prison time, or any prison time at all. Many criminals come out of jail only to commit more atrocious crimes.
I think this is the beginning. The legal system in France is not friendly to women. There is a long way to go when it comes to violence against women in France, whether it’s rape, domestic violence or even femicide.

I'm an American and I live near one of our major Army bases. We just had a field-grade officer convicted by court-martial for the sexual assault of one of his subordinate officers.
The level of violation Mme. Pelicot suffered is unimaginable, and if I sat on a jury for the crime I would have a tough time convicting her of murder had she decided on vengeance.
I say this as a combat veteran with PTSD: Anyone who can face the person that assaulted them, accuse them, and survive the trial is heroic. There's simply no other word for it.

Her right to anonymity is just a reflection of: it’s her fault and as the rape trials are not open to the public when the victims choose to be anonymous, the rapists is protected and the victim blaming is hidden from the scrutiny of the public. The men that are not inclined to rape are not exposed to the practices and reality that face women . That is what is evident from this case.

  • @teleopinions1367

One of the things you are missing in this report is interviews with legislators to see if there is a willingness to change Frances' laws about domestic abuse, sexual assault, rape, consent, etc, or is it just lip service that things will change for women? You need to put legislators on the record that they will enact stronger laws about those issues and longer sentences for the perpetrators.
The patriarchal patterns are entrenched in French and Italian societies, probably a little more than in other places. You can see it in the fashion industry, right? I think the fashion shows started in either one of those countries and it exemplifies how women are objectified even by other women. And, it is all for cash, it is a business after all.

What she has done has taken tremendous bravery and conviction, and she is an extraordinary example to everyone. Women have every right to feel hugely proud of her, as do we all. The sexist attitudes that make this kind of event possible have to be torn out root and branch. They have been allowed to fester for far too long. A thorough reassessment of masculinity is long overdue. I think it's clear that there are many men who are committed to making things better, but the rest simply have to be prevailed upon. This is unacceptable. It cannot be allowed to continue. No more joking around. No more foot dragging. This has to end. Now.

A prison sentence is not just the material fact of imprisonment. It's also about the humiliation and shame that accompany that imprisonment, both for those close to the convict and for society as a whole. And it is precisely one of the issues at stake in this trial: that shame must change sides. Rather than protesting about the lightness of some of the sentences, let's circulate the full list of the defendants' names, indictments and sentences as widely as possible, a list that most mainstream media refuses to publish in my country, in the name of highly debatable ethical criteria: in this way, we will help to give their full weight to the sentences handed down.
The full, uncensored list can be found with minimal effort on the websites of the BBC (in English) and Libération (in French).

    • @bearswithglasses
      @bearswithglasses Місяць тому

... feminism is *literally* about equity for men and women. That's literally the entire point. Just look up the word in the dictionary. The fact that this still goes on means that society isn't equitable and feminism, the idea that men and women should be treated with equity in society, is still very relevant. Trying to say that feminism isn't relevant is saying women should not be treated with equity, which is the opposite of what you seem to be trying to say.

I am so glad that there is a very long awaited societal change happening. For way too long humanity was focused on technological and industrial progress, while societal moral values are on even worse state then even in tribal times. We are fighting to get it at least at the same point, and it is very telling how much the system is obstructed by how difficult it is for victims and how easy for abusers it is to commit such heinous crimes against humanity.

Poor sweet and courageous woman. My cousin was one of Reynhard Sinaga's victims.
He only found out about the unprotected assault after they found video and his wristwatch at the scene.
He had absolutely no idea, and i can only imagine how completely violating and disorienting it is to find out _afterwards_ .
He was a straight man and im very proud of him for choosing to testify, and dispel the stigma and seek justice.
Just as Mrs Pelicot has. This woman is an absolute force of pure resilience.
However - the fact that these were male victims, is that why Sinaga recieved a LIFE SENTENCE?
Or are individuals reduced down to a numbers game here...?
50+ times to that same woman,
or 200+ times to individual seperate men?
Who gets to say which is more damaging?
    Can anyone answer that?
I wish her and her family the very best in her trauma recovery. 💗❤️‍🩹💗
