This is what we’ve needed all along. More mustachioed, face-tattooed, gangsters-turned-comedians-turned-Catholic-nerds, wearing flannel and mom jeans, explaining high fantasy please!
Shayne, I am a 66 year old Christian woman. I have loved your comedy for years and would pray for you and recently your conversion testimony popped up on UA-cam and I was so thrilled to hear you are now a brother in Christ. ❤ I love LotR movies but never read the books. This was an amazing explanation! You did it with such clarity and your great humor. So down to earth and easy to understand. May the Lord use you for the advancement of His Kingdom. 🥰
I'm sure I'm not alone in sharing this sentiment, but as far as I'm concerned, you have license to FULLY nerd out on LOTR whenever you see fit. I'm here for it. 👊😁💯
Bro, I’m a huge Tolkien fan. Big Silmarillion fan. You nailed this, made it funny and made it epic. The world would be a better place if more people read Tolkien. Awesome job.
Dude this is literally the best description of Gandalf like you explained everything! The elvish, the forms they took, everything and you did it ina way that anyone could follow if they wanted. I've been a fan of yours for a long time and I think my favourite part of you is your unapologetically you. Just keep doing your thing whatever makes you happy and feeling good. As fan all I ask is stay making people laugh and if I get a video breaking down lotor or something I'll be a happy camper
Well, you get a notification from a random person talking about Lord of the Rings and I'm like, wtf. Then I had a thought. Isn't this that brilliant comic I subscribed to ages ago and then never saw another video. Then I get sucked in. I have to admit that I read the Hobbit twice but then you look at how big Lord of the Rings is and...... I gave up. I watched the films but now it all makes sense. I'm so glad I didn't click away, I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing.
BRO!!! In my entire almost 6 decades on this planet, I have NEVER heard a better explanation of something I never really understood!! Please, please please do that full explanation of the history of Middle Earth!
Congrats and much love for finding community in the catholic church. Generic Christian here but the catholic church is the all time winner as far as dealing with basic human suffering

If you are not catholic, remember that he said thatvefore the biblical canon was stablished
It sure is nice to look through all the history of the Catholic Church and see absolutely nothing harmful or manipulative, truly an amazing organization that only does good things.
@humantwist-offcap9514 this is one of the dumbest comments I have ever read. Insane cope. If you can lie to yourself about something this dumb, you could self delude about anything.
Just some side information: Sir Christopher Lee (Sauramon in the movies) knew Tolkein and asked if he could play Gandalf, and Tolkein promised him the role (if he had anything to do with it). Sir Christopher was a legend, served in special operations in the war, was engaged to a princess and had lots of other tales.
I’m glad to see you putting out more content bro!! Especially on one of my favorite subjects ever. I love the knowledge you provide. I appreciate your positivity and can’t wait for you to put out more videos!
I knew this stuff, but I thoroughly enjoyed your explanation! I came here after watching a few clips from your conversation with Matt and Mother Natalia. God bless you, Shayne, and a blessed Advent to you!
YAY!! Just discovered your standup stuff and THIS strolls through my feed!! I LOVE TOLKIEN!! I love putting on the audio book while I'm doing stuff around the house or if im having a hard time falling asleep. Ive read it sooooo many times and still notice new things about it. CLASSIC.
Great video! Gandalf is one of my favorites, for sure! Interestingly, Sauron was a Maiar connected to Aulë at first; being his apprentice, he could learn how to work metal which led to the creation of the rings. It also shows how persuasive Melkor was and how he seduced many 'angels' to damnation.
This is the top of the mountain as it comes to content! This background makes the speech Gandalf says on the bridge when confronting the Valar even more deep and powerful!
Seeing the smile on your face like "man I hope you guys are following along..." as you tried explaining this complexity was the highlight of my morning
I wrote a 10-page research paper in college about Tolkien's languages and how their linguistic constructions are related to the relative "goodness" and "badness" of the speakers. And you, my good sir, are speaking *my* language! Please have more of these LOTR videos in the future!
This video was super helpful. I have tried to read TLOTR books 3 times and I keep getting stuck around page 100 because of the description given to a tree lol but I LOVE the films and LOVE the story…I do want to read them someday! 😬
Hey my dude, I got saved six months ago and it’s been the best thing that has ever happened in my life. I have always enjoyed your standup and related to some of the less redeeming elements of your life story. I am especially stoked that you found God too. As someone who has meant to read Tolkien’s body of work and been stoked on the movies, this video was dope. Thank you and God bless, brother.
This is excellent. One of my all time favorite comedians explaining a big question from one of my all time favorite movie series. I'm from the "Love the Movies, but Haven't Gotten Around to Reading the Books" club. Please, PLEASE keep doing videos explaining all the stuff that the movies didn't get around too. Top tier content 💯.
I read the books back in the mid 90s and immediately wanted to get a back pack and start hiking the countryside of Oklahoma! Except it's really hot and I was an 18 year old girl and no one probably would have heard from me again so glad I didn't but I still think about it.
As soon as I saw that a guy with face tattoos was talking about Lord of The Rings, I knew it would be fire! Lol ... Then I realized it was Shayne Smith, and I was all in on watching! This did not disappoint LOL 😅😂😂😂 and honestly a solid explanation!
I love the movies, have read the books and frequently listen to the audiobooks. This video is awesome! Now I’m waiting for your channel all about Tolkien.
As someon who has both Gandalf and Galadriel tattooed onto his body, I thought this video was GREAT! I knew about gandalf and the maiaer from reading The Silmarillion, but it is much more entertainingh to watch someone else explain it. Love your stand up, love your channel.
Awesome stuff man. Now I want to hear your explanation of the Dagor Dagorath and how Arda is changed with a new song. Also as far as Eru not being god, even Tolkien wrote a debate between Finrod and Andreth discussing all things mortality. Finrod states Eru will come into the world and heal it but also remain as he is outside of it. That's pretty clear cut to me, my dude.
Dude, I went to see you near Chicago a month and a half ago with the woman I’ve been seeing for our one year celebration, and that was such a good set. Knowing you’re also super into Tolkien is just awesome. It’s one of the few nerdy things she actually enjoys.
My husband is about to do a Tolkien based Bible study in January. I don’t know anything about LOTR but I’m watching to try and not be completely clueless. Please continue this series.
I'm looking forward to finally reading the trilogy as part of my own journey of saving myself. I got a set the year before the movies were announced, and I've read The Hobbit a bunch but still never made it too far into Fellowship. I loved this so much. Just in time for my annual LOTR rewatch with the fam. Plus I'm way overdue for a re-read and this might have just pushed me over the edge!
Casual LoTR fan here; I only watched the movies. Multiple times, but still. "What is Gandalf ?" I thought Naaaaaaa, then The LORD persuaded me to watch the sleaved man with more time in the chair with a pulsating needle than I can shake a stick at. So down the rabbit hole I went. I thought a little "wizard" knowledge before bed on a sunday night would do me some good. Ya know fireballs and lightening bolts style. Oh man, ok, seriously. The LORD (not Eru) really knows how to make a man smile. I was geeking out. Like so many others have said, I have never had LoTR explained in such a cool a fascinating way before. It all makes so much more sense now. I found myself thinking A. I should visit my Amzn wishlist for a LoTR book (Christmas and all) and B. I would watch a whole series from you about all the different.... everything LoTR....lol. Seriously though, they say never judge a book by it's cover. I loved the video, loved the explanation, loved the enthusiasm! Thank you kind Sir, for adding knowledge to my spirit! Truely! Know The LORD JESUS, Repent, and Pray!

What dreams are made of.
Agreed
This is the greatest explanation of LotR lore I have ever seen.
My head canon is he just fell into a pit full of balrogs and just kept killing them and leveling up until he turned white. Very OP strat.

This is my second favorite rendering because I'm a recovering RPG addict 😂.
Gandalf sent the rest of the party away so he’d get all the xp for killing the balrog.
That explanation deserves an award.
Still stoked about you becoming a Christian :)

Go ahead and deep dive. I’ve read the hobbit and LOTR but nothing else. Your manner of explaining was very clear to me. Thanks!
Nice job. I love Gandalf. The more I learn about him the more he has become my favorite character.
Love your comedy, love your conversion story, and now I get to hear you break down LotR lore? Things just keep getting better
genuinely did not expect to see this in my sub box at all
Yet, totally Shayne.
So glad you are back Shayne!!
I had to rewatch his stand-up story about getting his karate tournament. It is gut-busting. It is one of the funniest stories ever

Awesome, I've read all the books but it was 30 years ago and I have forgotten some of it. It was an amazing recap!!
I read Silmarillion twice, and all the books, twice, and I gotta say you did an incredible job covering this in 15 minutes. Incredible.
This is the most entertaining LOTR content I’ve watched since 2005!! Please explain more of the books to us dummies that can’t be bothered to read.

I'm so here for this!
"It's a whole thing" is such an accurate statement and can be applied to a million things in LotR, haha. Excellent explanation of the madness.
