Used to come here with my mates in the sixties ….from the Calderwood area …..as said ….not much left even then …. but you where miles from council houses….now they are very close…. It was like an expedition in they days…..
Whenever I walk down here with my dogs I try to work out where it was and what parts of the remaining wall and steps go where. There's so little left though I can't work it out.
Despite the abhorrence of its destruction, the building was largely gutted by fire and vandalism perpetrated by local soldiers stationed there during World War II, and there were other acts of arson before that. The damp, mouldy and burnt out shell was thereafter legally demolished by a private salvager in the late-1940s, leaving just the octagonal tower standing. That portion, representing a very small percentage of the entire building, was about to collapse and was a danger to children playing in it. Despite best efforts, the building could not be consolidated, as it relied on the support of the former building which surrounded it. This led to the East Kilbride Development Corporation arranging for its demolition in late 1951, which was also a legal measure. No local authority was involved in the fate of the building. As claims about illegality and the involvement of local authorities are wholly unbased in any reality, then it bestows no honour on those suggesting such nonsense, especially when they post it on a public webpage.
What a shame this beautiful building was demolished.
