Man, I’ve been leaning how to play guitar from you ( on UA-cam) for probably the last seven years. From Robin Trower, Jimi, to Eddie Van Freakin Halen ! I’m just a working class guitar player, so your UA-cam lessons have been my “ Go-to” ! Just wanted to say thanks 👍 Keep on rockin 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Ditto Jess I've been playing guitar since 1974 and I can always learn a little something from almost any player. Brett Papa is by far one of my favorites, I'm commenting to also say Thanks to him. Great content and delivery
Oh man, blues rock guy here and I totally relate to Brett’s struggles with major 1-4-5 progressions. I sound like a soulless goon on them so thanks for pushing me in the right direction, Brett!
For someone who’s just now figuring this out it seems very overwhelming, but you’re the only one who’s ever made it clear, so thank you very much. I’ve been playing Hendrix’s version of Like A Rolling Stone since I started, and I was in the same boat where I could never figure out how to make it sound great like he could, so really, thank you.
This lesson puts together many concepts from the CAGED system and incorporates it into an amazing playing style. It is eye opening for me. Thank you very much. Rewinding and playing it over multiple times so that I memorize it and use it in my playing.
It's a good thing to do. I do it a lot. I don't actually "watch" the television, but just turn it on low for company. Surprising all the ideas you pick up on. And before the interwebs, people did it a lot more. You've really become one of the most respected teachers on the youtubes, man. An ol' buddy.
@@BrettPapa it not only sounds awesome, but the burst is about as good as it gets. I'm goofy in the head for bursts of any make or model because no two are exactly alike. (I love my speckled pigeons for the same reason) When the transition is subtle, it's pure class. "Clown bursts" are the least favorite because they look amateurish and they're not subtle at all. You're teaching something here that's right on target for me just now. All the great rock heroes are still heroes, but lately I've been gravitating towards the Memphis soul/ Muscle shoal thing, and guys like Cropper, Curtis Mayfield, Cornell Dupree, and others of that persuasion have captured my interest. I'm drawn to the economy of notes, the clean Strat and Tele sound, and the tight precision and excellent taste those guys have on the Motown and Memphis stuff. It just feels like grown-up musicianship, and it says so much with so little. The grooves are also golden. I think the concepts you're pointing out in this vid will go a long ways towards helping me get a better grasp of what's going on in this genre. For that I offer heartfelt thanks. Liking and subbing right now.
Awesome lesson, ive been trying to play along with everything from the tv to the sound of the air conditioner or the birds outside for years and it really helps.
OMG….such an eye opening lesson….. you are opening mat mind and eyes to so much…. So glad I got the email this morning for this post. Everything you provide…. Paid or free…. You are the “King” of instructors…. Thank you so much!👌
hi Brett, i"m so in love with these Hendrix style chords embellishments. You're the one that opened a new world to me. And both your courses pentatonic soloing major and minor are great too. So thank you Brett ! :)
I play guitar (unplugged electric) every time I watch TV with my wife. I run through licks and arpeggios while listening to what is going, really ingraining the muscle memory. My wife is a gem and tells me that it doesn't bother her hearing me repeat the same things over and over LOL🤣
I've been doing this for a few years. I'm usually under instructions to watch shows like Masterchef when I'd rather be playing the guitar. I'll usually sit in front of the TV with a Strat and solo acoustically against whatever background or incidental music is playing at the time. I've found that my melodic playing is much better because I have to listen intently and try to follow the changes.
Man you are at the exact same point as I am I've always just shredded through the scale over songs. But now doing the Hendrix approach and being able to see the scale underneath every cord in the progression is so fun. I never thought I would have so much fun playing without a looper or backing track
@@BrettPapa wow can't believe Brett Papa answered my comment lol. I've been watching you for years man never had a formal lesson in my life. Thank you for what you do
Killer tone AND killer lesson! Thanks so much for breaking all this down and making it accessible. And YES to playing more melodic!!! I’m working on that now. Keep up all the good work, man!
OMG, that intro! Brett I have learned so much from you and your membership has been pure gold! So much amazing content and simply put you are the best teacher out there!

So much Whiskey Myers in that intro.. love that band.. and of course BlackBerry Smoke.. Yellowstone really does have a kickass soundtrack.. and this is something I’ve been doing for almost as long as I’ve been playing.. but it is legitimately good advice for anyone who’s not eat, sleep, breathing the guitar.. lol..
Thanx Brett really great lession! Hey it sure would be cool if ya got one of them Blackberry Smoke fella's to talk about/break down what their thinkin about while soloing!! No shortage of melodies flyin round when those boys are makin music!! Thanx again.
I think Brett’s teaching videos are excellent, and as soon as I may, I will look to join. I must say though-as a suggestion, not a criticism-I do find the idea of thinking of the second position pentatonic over the first position chord, I.e. over an A chord think 2nd position pentatonic ( really G position, two) for the Hendrix-style double-stops, is counterintuitive. It’s a nice idea, but, for me at least, one that I find makes me have to think too hard about it. Maybe if Brett said “think G pentatonic position two over the A” it would feel more natural-like any chord substitution idea (yes, I realise it isn’t). Anyway, just a thought, coupled with a thank you for the charm, wit and humility of Brett’s lessons. 👏👏👏👏
strangely ive been playing these same double stops for years. not even sure where i learned them. i use to not know they were called double stops.... lol. and for some strange reason everytime i hear these same double stops i think of floyd cramers "last date".
Hey Brett, quick question for ya. How long did it take you to receive Jeff Senn strats? And comparing to other great strats you have, how does it sound? Thinking of ordering one. Thanks in advance and thoroughly enjoying all your vids!
Jeff's guitars are fantastic. All of my Strats are different and made by different people all are great but each have their own character. Jeff is a ferocious player so all of his guitars play and are set up great. Great sounding as well. I ended up selling mine back to the original owner because he was so heartbroken that he sold it. I WILL be getting another one of my own soon. I think he only offers up what he makes these day so I am not positive you can order custom stuff anymore. Best thing to do would be to just call Jeff. He is a great guy! His guitars are fantastic and you won't regret getting one.
Great lesson! I got lost a bit in the beginning I would like to see a lesson on how to sit on the sofa with your wife and watch a show( I get that) it's the part where you grab your guitar and learn the songs while sitting with her.
