Whatever one thinks of Garrison's singing, he is the audience's everyman, standing in for us as we would sing along with the Wailin' Jennys. His occasional blips, especially forgetting the lyrics, reflects our own brokenness, which is why the song was written in the first place--the comfort of grace at the end of our days.

Great version of this classis gospel song. Nice harmony, really love that base, and the Jennys are angelic. Love it!

Just found this today - the most uplifting song I have heard in a while - Garrison has captured the spirit of the music and the audience and The Word.

I have listened to about 50 versions of this song and this is the first to bring tears to my eyes. I don't know why but I do know it was beautiful even with the improvisions....Thanks, Lotus

I wonder why, if you don't like Garrison, you don't turn him off and leave him and his guests to those of us who appreciate him?

I love how the Jennys dress like actual female humans. You can’t say that about most pop singers.

    Who sang the bass?

Agree on both counts. I would have preferred letting the Jennys sing it and Garrison Keillor stay out of it, but it was worth it. I would definitely put singing along with the Wailin' Jennys on my "now I can die in peace" moments.

Garrison can't sing lead well, should stick to bass singing. The original lyrics are much more powerful than his "off the cuff" improv. But I guess that's OK, he brought a lot of joy and good music to us for years.

If Keillor weren't in it this would be perfect.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, however ill conceived and wrong it may be.
This commentary field would be much, much better without you in it!

Well, if you can't sing, just do a song you don't know the words to and the audience thinks it's comedy.

I CAN NOT stand Garrison's singing. And find it extremely rude that he forces his voice on the guest bands!!! This is the biggest reason I stopped listening.
I hope Chris T can revive the show. And please, skip the sound effects!
But can it be PHC without GK? Noah Adams couldn't make it work.

3 Years and only 2 people agreed with you. I can see why; G.K and the Sound effects are the best parts of the show.

Garrison, I believe, knew he had a bad voice. I think that is part of the comic makeup of the show. Garrison would deliberately clown it up and do funny things. His voice was not meant to be good.

The Prairie Home Companion without Garrison Keillor? Unthinkable...

@@42degreesouth And now, there will be no Chris T. An incredible musician, but I wasn't impressed with his version.
