  • John DeVore's ongoing series of music recommendations, record reviews, and musings for the DeVore Fidelity UA-cam channel and the Vinyl Community. A 50 cent bin LP discovery, Elsie Itashiki's Miss Teal Joy and her followup, Mood In Mink are a pair of excellent mid-century vocal records that deserve more attention.

Thanks for introducing us to Teal Joy. I wanted to learn more about her (Elsie Chizuko Itashiki), so I spent some time scouring the web. Apparently she was born in 1926 in Seattle and unfortunately was interred at the Topaz (Utah) internment camp during WWII. She had some promotional success and appeared on both the Steve Allen and The Tonight Shows (Jack Paar) during the 50s. Can’t find anything else about her from the late 50s until October 1990 when she died at 64. Have been listening to her music since watching your episode.

Her family must have moved away from Seattle, because there was an internment camp at the Puyallup Fairgrounds, about 40 minutes south of Seattle. I do wonder why she passed away so young; people with Japanese bloodlines tend to live much longer than 64 years.

Thank you for the recommendation, John. I purchased a white label mono promo of the debut, as well as a stereo version on AAMCO. I was leary of the stereo being 'reprocessed mono', but it is a true stereo mix with L/C/R. Also purchased a mono Mood In Mink. Thank you!

I’m fascinated by the languages required by different genres. A female jazz singer can get by with American, Brazilian and French. For opera English, French, German, Italian, Russian are required. I’m a classical church singer. I sing American, English, Latin, French and almost German. This is just singing not fluency. My teacher taught French diction at University of Michigan. He claimed his favorite language to sing is Russian.

I clean all my new records to get rid of any residue and grime before I play it. Sounds great!👍🏼

Interestingly (for me, anyway) Seeco is a label one generally associates with the classic Cuban groups of the 50s and 60s (I have a couple of 78s on this label as well.) Bethlehem, which had ladies like Chris Conner on its roster, makes a little more sense.
This lady is brand new to me, thanks for the introduction!
It's proof that good, solid artistry and craftsmanship ultimately survive.
(Would love to know who the instrumentalists are.)

The "CD version" of the first album is available, streaming, on UA-cam Music, labelled "The Oriental Billie Holiday (feat. Jack Quigley & His Jazz Band)". "Ted Steele Presents Miss Teal Joy" is also there. They are beautiful. Thanks, John.

Hi Chris..I also found it on UA-cam Music and then found your note here. I added my favs to my "Crooner" playlist.
I love UA-cam Music....it's paid library + free user upload library + no ads when watching video's. I think it's the best streaming value on the planet. Like many, I really have no interest in hi rez audio at this time. YTM quality is good enough for me. You agree?
