    Bed shaped is a term the singer’s mother used when she described as those confined to their beds in the nursing home she worked in. She described their legs as becoming bed shaped. So people reunited at an old age after living their lives separately is the way I interpret it. A beautiful but sad song!

    The intro of this song is so special, just all mood in those electronics. The feeling of waking up at sunrise, bleary eyed and tired after a long night.
    The music video of this song really helps with understanding the themes.
    Bedshaped is about feeling abandoned in life, be it in love or just in friendship, or shunned by society to the point of personal isolation and the hope you’ll reunite some day with that loved one or friend, or find your happy place where things work for you.
    The music video is a stop motion film about a homeless bedraggled man who is shunned by the world around him, he hides away and scrawls the lyrics of the song on bathroom walls “don’t laugh at me, don’t look away [from me]” (don’t just pass me by on the street essentially). Towards the end of the song he puts clothes on and appears before a crowd in a restaurant. As the song reaches its crescendo, their faces turn horrifically scary and intimidating, frightening the man back into his bathroom cubical as the world falls apart around him, to the point where he’s standing in a room of light with the members of Keane performing around him in stop motion too.
    Tim had this to say about the song’s meaning:
    “[The song] is about feeling that you've been "left behind" by an old friend or lover, and about hoping that you'll be reunited one day so that you can live out the end of your lives together the way you started them (...) a hope that they'll eventually want to get away from the bright lights and come back home. It's a sad and angry song, but also full of hope.” About the song’s title, he said: “I think I'm right in saying that in hospital when someone is ill and has to spend a lot of time in bed they can become 'bedshaped'. It sounds a bit depressing (...) but in the context of the song I wanted to suggest old age and frailty(...)”
    It was the third single for Hopes and Fears and was another hit for them, Top 10 in the UK, Belgium, Denmark, top 40 in Greece and Ireland and top 20 in the Netherlands.
    It’s definitely one of if not my favourite Hopes and Fears track, although I love them all because I listened to the whole album as a kid, Bedshaped is the most relatable track for me, not that I’m homeless or depressed but I am a rather lonely person I’ll admit, I’ve never had much of a social life, few friends to socialise with on account of my autism making social situations and conversation difficult or awkward when it’s not about things I’m interested in.
    Great reaction! 😊

    This song being played live is a full experience. When he sings "sun in your eyes" there's a yellow light over the band and the crowd, and when he says "in white light, I don't think so", we have white lights.

    I always thought that bedshaped meant that the girl he loves and wants and is dreaming about is so gorgeous that when he looks at her he longs to go to bed with her. She is the perfect shape for bed. He is imagining her knocking at his door and they will be so in love, so in tune with each other that they will ascend into heaven in white light together 'ohhhh and up we'll go in white light...' Yet he thinks it will never happen '...I don't think so!', but he is still hoping it might happen one day so he says 'but what do I know?' Nobody knows what can happen in life and he isn't giving up on her completely. He is a huge romantic. He's unsure of himself. He thinks she can never love him. But he still hopes she will. It's so full of yearning this song, it takes a hold of my heart and squeezes it.

    hi I was not sure about the lyrics either and found some interpretation. Ok so here’s my guess on what it means- I get the reference to ‘bed shaped about old age / frailty etc but I think this song is talking about a couple who have been together and or known each other a long time but are maybe drifting apart. I think the bit about ‘ up we go’is falling into bed together which a lot of people do to try and prolong a dying relationship ( a bed shaped) relationship. When he says’ I don’t think so’ he’s trying to resist the toxic cycle of this but ‘what do I know?’ Suggests he understands his own frailty to resist her and the continuation of the relationship) - again frailty. Just my take but I’ve thought this from the first time I heard it.

    • @aideeperez93
      @aideeperez93 3 роки тому

      @@wallyscrib6282 i think so, in the original video we can see to character writing in the wall "AT ME" while Tom sing "FROM ME" so It seems to me that this audio was created for the US market but they didn´t change this part in the video
      UK vs USA hahahaha

    • @MrAaRazor
      @MrAaRazor 3 роки тому +1

      I'm British and I hear him singing "don't laugh AT me", which is how it is said in both US and UK English. It's probably the long 'ff' sound from "laugh" that makes it sound like the next word starts with an F, so your mind puts that together as "FROM" rather than "AT". It can be difficult to make out lyrics sometimes, even as a native speaker.
