5 mins into your video, I rushed to order it. It's enroute, lol. I absolutely love your reviews, and highly recommend them. I do like the humor of another fav, but sometimes I just want a straight shot, and down to the nitty-gritty take. I get that from you, and appreciate it. You videos are rich in analysis, and answer the questions that occur in most people's heads, lol. I do chuckle here and there, at some of your unintended metaphors, because they usher in quick understanding, and deliver your point-right down the middle. Lov that. Your very smart, and render intuitive reviews, second to none I've come across. Keep up the fabulous work. Me and my friends learn alot from you, and always can't wait for the next video. Add a donate button, so we can pay more than just lip-serivce, lol. Hav a good one bro.

Looking forward to the H3 / H8 comparison. I have the H3 and it is a perfect size for me. I run it around the homestead on .5 watt covering a about 10 of 50 acres so far. I have stubbys on the way and im really hoping I’ll be L&C all over the 50. We will see. I was debating getting a H8 just to have it. (Im that happy with the H3) These are nothing like a FT-60 but for the price I don’t think it can be beat. I can throw it in the side by side and not worry about it. That in itself is value added in my books. Hoping you can share some knowledge on the programming side. I got it down to where the software works well for me but as always there are quirks that are probably my issues not the radios… lol

I bought one off Amazon, with a click to use coupon, it was $39. As of this moment, it looks like that deal is still available. I found your video to get it switched to GMRS mode, as I don't have my tech ticket yet. Now I need to find your H3/H8 comparison video, as I own H8's as well.

Great video, and it saved me from making a very annoying mistake. I was about to return my TD-H3 pair because I could not get the mode to change. The screen on mine (240625 firmware) has a "yes" on the left and a "no" no the right to confirm the mode change... but it looked to me like the "yes" was above the "1" key, so that's what I pressed. And that didn't work. Several times. It wasn't until I saw you pressing the blue button that I realized what I had done wrong. The blue button does the trick!

Thank you for the vid! An interesting question is, if you have it in HAM mode (which is an easy way to make sure that you don't transmit out of band by mistake) will it allow you to save channels with frequencies outside HAM bands, i.e. with RX allowed and TX disabled? So far I have used my H3 in "normal" mode, and I just manually switch the duplex to off in Chirp as a safeguard, for the channels of potentially transmitable non-HAM bands (such as marine bands)... But if the HAM mode allowed to store them in RX only mode through Odmaster, that would be so much quicker and easier...

Great video, thanks so much! I received a pair of these the other day, and am trying to figure a few things out. In Normal mode, I can't seem to manually set the Direction and Offset on the Ham frequencies to hit my local repeaters. However, on the GMRS frequencies/channels, I'm not having those issues and can set them manually from the radio keypad. Is there a step I'm missing? I'd like to keep it in Normal mode to use all frequencies and channels. KN6ZCU/WRMH840

Programming a repeater on the TD-H3:
If you're not in VFO mode double press the orange button to switch to VFO.
Enter the receive frequency for the repeater.
Press the blue key to enter Menu.
Arrow up to menu item 13 to set TX CTCSS. Press the menu key again to select the item. Enter the correct CTCSS and press the menu key again to save the change and exit that selection.
Arrow up to item 23 to set the offset direction. Press the menu key again to select the item. Use the up/down arrow keys to select None, Plus or Minus. Press the menu key again to save the change and exit that selection.
Arrow up to item 24 to set the offset. Press the menu key again to select the item. Enter the correct offset value. Press the menu key again to save the change and exit that selection.
You should be able to work the repeater at this point. If you want to save it to memory arrow up to item 25 to set the Memory slot. Press the menu key again to select the item. Arrow up or down to select an open memory slot. Press the menu key again to save to memory and exit that selection.

I just saw that Amazon is selling the Yellow models in GMRS and Ham bands. The GMRS price is less than the Ham model. So, knowing the radio can swap back and forth, I may be tempted to buy the cheaper model, and swap over to the Ham side, since I am a Tech.

Does the fact alone that the H3 can be unlocked make it illegal as a GMRS radio per the FCC? Since you're a licensed ham you are familiar with the rules....the question is whether you care, whether anyone will know, and whether you care if they know. The radio is clean enough that nobody will know, so it boils down to how much you care. Care a lot? Leave it in the pre-programmed configuration. Care less than a lot? Open it up and use the radio. I say that realizing that you're not asking me and knowing that I care not about any laws or regulations pertaining to anything that isn't born of and controlled by government, including radio frequencies.

    • @HardcoreFourSix
      @HardcoreFourSix 10 місяців тому +3

FCC makes Rules not laws. I know that we have allowed administrative bureaucracies make rules that have the force of law, and that was a huge mistake. The only legitimate role for the FCC is to allow as many people as possible utilize the airwaves without causing harmful interference. The operative principle is what you do with your equipment, not what equipment you buy or make (just like 2A items).

@@keithmatthews4441 I have only ever used CHIRP to program the TD-H3. With CHIRP you enter the RX frequency and then the entered offset amount and direction determines the TX frequency automatically. I would be guessing with the software that you are using but perhaps the offset amount and direction need to be set and the TX is left alone. I have encountered something similar with the Radioddity GM-15. It too doesn't allow the TX to be changed. But if you enter the RX, set the offset direction and amount everything works. I discovered it by accident but it worked. Perhaps give that a try. You might also want consider switching to CHIRP. The TD-H3 is very well supported by that program and it's very easy to use.

Thank you for your assistance. Figured out the problem. The FRS Radio was operating on a CTSS RX/TX of 118..8Hz. Did a scan on the TD-H3 to find those codes and added them into the GRMS radios for the channels that we use on the Ranch. Works great now, able to communicate with my ranch hands, and when I need to go to a repeater and communicate long distance with my other TD-H3 radio using a repeater, I now have a lot of flexibility with one radio, as opposed to having to switch between the FRS Radio and GRMS radio depending on who I want to communicate with and the distance I'm trying to cover. Have to say as a first time GRMS radio user, your videos came in extremely handy. While watching your videos I have been able to connect to my FRS radios, Add a Repeater, Get rid of that annoying beep and voice, and much more. Again, thank you for your public service.
