Let's Wrench on an Old Apple IIe ! Adding an FPGA for HDMI and Audio with the A2FPGA

- I love that there are passionate retro enthusiasts making new hardware for old computers. My latest acquisition is the A2FPGA - a card with a built in FPGA that can create a host of new expansion options. Right now the card will output video and audio over HDMI and simulate a "Mockingboard" card which greatly enhances the audio on a few select games. Find the card here: www.reactivemicro.com/shop/

I love the channel variety. This is more up my alley but I understand it not for everyone. Great content as always.
That is one Awesome card ... Who would have thought .. An Apple IIe is now better then any Apple IIe after the last one sold (~1996) So cool ! Enjoy playing the games with sound 😃
This is magnificent. Makes me think about pulling out my Apple II+ from the box it's been in for 35 years.
It's great to see the enthusiasm in Lon's eyes. Atari 8 bit guy over here. 👋
I'm always following Commodore stuff and know so little about old Apple computers. This is so cool to see!
There's some crazy hardware out there for the Apple II!
Never used an Apple IIe growing up so it's fun to see what I was missing out on. It was also cool seeing that you were able to hear the music that you were missing out on.
Still have a few Apple II floppies from 1981, when I was in high school. They had Apples (and dial-up to an HP9000F.) Had TRS-80 Model 1 at home. The Apple floppies are I think older version with fewer sectors (v 3.2?) Maybe one newer version. Also I think one used with a CPM OS adapter. Lastly, many are single sided, but had an extra notch cut out to use both sides. They are sitting in a file cabinet for 43 years. I wonder if they still work. Also just remembered that one might be for a p-system or something OS. I learned Pascal in that, and it became my primary programming language in the future (Turbo Pascal, Borland Delphi.)
Love retro stuff. Wish I still had my Atari 65XE. Can't remember what I did with it.
I have an apple iiE and it's been fun seeing all the cool boards available. I just got one that can emulate a PC and Mac classic. This is pretty amazing.
Back in the day I had a “PC Transporter” board that turned the Apple II into a PC-XT. Pretty neat.
Wow nice , giving life to old Mac. That looks like an custom ESP32 s3 microcontroller.
I love it Lon! I think it’s really cool, and I can’t wait to see it in your IIgs!
Love this kind of content Lon!
Lon! Thanks for posting this video
Great video thanks for posting
Action Retro got a ESP32 card in that let him emulate i THINk a mac plus on a iiE.... and run the esp32 version of Doom.
it genuinely is astonishing what can be done these days, and yes i support shoving in a card in with orders of magnitude more processing power than the actual computer because sometimes it is as much the physical shell as anything that makes the experiance.
It works great with the IIgs and a 5:4 Dell P1917s 19" SXGA LCD Monitor which has an HDMI input.
Cool!
FPGA technology can do some pretty cool things. I recently bought an FPGA for my original 1980 Atari Tempest Arcade cabinet. The FPGA is a plug in replacement for the Tempest PCBs. It is the size the Raspberry Pi that replicates the original PCBs which includes replicating the 6502 cpu.
They are amazing! Very well suited for these retro game tasks where most consoles/arcades had a bunch of processes running in parallel on multiple processors.
Great info Lon. I have a apple IIc . Which I never used that much. I Still have it. Love your content. 👍🏿
Hey Lon, loved the video. I love retro stuff when it comes to computers as like you I grew up with a lot of it as a kid. I would most certainly like to see a follow up with you IIGS, if you decide to make one.
Yes I have some plans in the works to get the IIGS back up and running with a new power supply. Stay tuned!
Wow. Love this.
I hated Apple when I was a kid and I still hate them. But these retro mod videos are actually quite fun to watch.
The Apple II was the last good product Apple ever made IMO. It's all been downhill from there!
I wanted to se how the scan lines looked. Not all scan line generators nor shaders do a good job
Ironically, I went to reactivemicro to get PSU kit for my IIgs, and also a RAMworks IIII and a ROMXe followed me home (hey... that Manila Gear no-slot clock is NEVER in stock and the ROMX gives me a lot more functionality for like $10 more!)
Good old Skyfox, I played it on the C64. I played The Halley Project, also on the C64, but that intro isn’t ringing any bells.
I'm of the System 7 PPC and Windows 95 Pentium era. Really impatient waiting for fpga technology to get there.
I almost joined the channel to watch this review but I had my credit card locked...
The Xilinx chip on the CFFA is ALSO an FPGA, so your were running at least two FPGAs on that early 1980s machine 😂
I'm wondering what the FPGA board they used for this is, might be good for projects in general.
It looks like the Sipeed Tang Nano 20K
wow its apple brand sir maybe geOS GUI will works on it like in commodore64
It's hard to believe that anyone spends time and effort to make a new board for an Apple II
Funny how everything Apple is still double the price.
WHAT THE HELL IS AN FPGA? Please define acronyms!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t scream dude! There is this thing called Google that can be very helpful. Learn how to use it.
TLDR: Field Programmable Gate Array.
In essence it is programmable hardware.
Very cool stuff. Usually pricey however.
Cheers!
