  • I love C.P. Cavafy's Poem so much I had to create and edit my own version. What a great combination The Sea, Vangelis, Sean Connery, the poetic prowess of C.P Cavafy....he would have been proud! See More Poem Lyrics Below!
Life is always about the Journey no matter how big or small ... how good or bad.... how happy or sad. The destination is always of little consequence.
God Bless R.I.P Sean Connery (1930-2020)
    ITHACA (1910)
As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
    Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon do not be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensation
touches your spirit and your body.
    Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon, you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope that your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
    with what pleasure, what joy,
    you come into harbour's seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
    to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
    sensual perfume of every kind...
    as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and learn again from those who know.
Keep Ithaca always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you're destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so that you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you've gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvellous journey.
Without her you would have not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca won't have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you would have understood by then what these Ithaca's mean.

That is the most optimistic message I ever heared .I am thinking seriously to hear it every day. ♥️
It may change the way I see all those bad things which happened to me on that long journey

Thank You George! I first heard this whilst visiting an exhibition at The National Archaeological Museum in Athens 3 years ago and sat to listen to the narrated poem 3 times. It certainly left an impression on me too!

@@Rorynes Hmm..... Think it was written in 1894 ...Revised by Cavafy in 1910 but not published until 1911 and not translated into English in 1924

@@AChristmasCollection I think you mistook with his poem "Second Odyssey" which was written in 1894 and it was unpublished. In my Greek sources and books where I looked it is mentioned that it was written late 1910 when Cavafes was about 48 years old ,to correct myself, and published in 1911.
