You NEED to stop accepting the absolute worst, most obvious scams in human history as sponsors, pretending to like them and putting them in the middle of the video NOW. I'm tired of disliking and reporting good videos
Hearing "the late JDF" will never not hurt. No celebrity death has hit or stuck with me the way his has, especially given the circumstances. Was a childhood hero and I'll always be grateful for that. Sad note aside, really enjoyed this retrospective.
Came out of fucking nowhere, I have to say. But depression is a cruel bitch. I have to say though, this explains a lot of his behaviour. He was always up to make further Power Rangers stuff, and always seemed to crave the attention, which originally made me think he was just a tool who couldn't move on from the past. But now I realize, he was probably just looking for something he could only find from Power Rangers. His time on the show was likely the only time he actually truly felt any sort of satisfaction in life, by inspiring little kids and entertaining them. He was just desperate to find it again. Or maybe it was more about it being the only way he knew to inspire any sort of joy in people. Like Robin William's comedy work. He was miserable but did comedy because he didn't want anyone else to feel miserable. I guess JDF felt the same way. No way to know for certain what the reason is, but I'm sure there's a connection. (Not between Power Rangers and suicide, but between his enthusiasm for Power Rangers and his depression.) But regardless, I definitely see him in a much less negative light now.
@@theblackwidower It's a surprisingly common phenomenon, where people of creativity or celebrity cling to it as an outlet for some form of mental illness (depression, anxiety, etc.) There is a reason that historically both artists and actors were viewed as 'eccentrics' by society at large.
Thuy Trang's story genuinely makes me sad. Here's this very charming person who has overcome so much, only to be tragically killed at only 27. It's awful 😔
She actually was the most likely of tte bunch to get to A lister status. She was in the best crie sequel movie. Amy jo went the silver screen route and was pretty sucessful. I could have seen her in charlize angels and kil bill.
If you liked Jason, Zack, and trini. You’ll be happy to know that in the comics, they actually went on to become a new trio of rangers after their departure. With a better explanation on why the three left, and why Tommy was made leader.
Yeah, that was a fun idea, the 30th special could of slipped in some explanation but nope. Comics universe might be the best, especially with trini getting a ranger promotion even.
@1:21:30 There is a very good reason the Rangers can't use the new zords until the old ones are back under control - it's because the new zords *are* the old zords. Everytime the Thunderzords are summoned, the same old Dinozord is summoned first, and it is then Morphed into the new Thunderzord by the lightning that hits it. It's blatantly obvious in both the summoning scene and zord roll-call. The Thunderzords are merely a power-up for the Dinozords, and that is why they cannot be summoned simultaneously and why the Dinozords needed to be recovered first before the Thunderzords could be used.
18:40 Actually, this episode is ridiculously close to the Zyuranger episode it adapted as far as plot is concerned, right down to the blue and pink ranger changing personalities from the potion. They turned back to normal with the antidote right before they morphed in the Japanese original as well. Granted, Mei and Dan didn't become mere school bullies (because they weren't going to school of course) inasmuch as they became part of the crime underworld, even gunning down multiple people with tommy guns.
If anything, the only missed opportunity in both the US and Sentai versions is not seeing the morphed Blue & Pink Rangers acting all punkish. I'm honestly a sucker for seeing the morphed Rangers acting out of character in an episode where they get brainwashed or whatever.
It's so sad seeing Tommy knowing how things went, I never really had any heroes as a kid but with him being a favourite of mine in multiple seasons of power rangers he got pretty close
The last convention I went to, which was the summer before Covid hit, I was lucky enough to meet Jason David Frank. I got my picture taken with him and his autograph. I can't even describe what it meant to me, being able to meet my hero. I was so nervous! But he was a really nice guy and took time for all his fans. Meeting JDF had always been my dream and I got to live my dream that day. I will forever be grateful for JDF and Tommy showing me that redemption is possible for those of us who have fallen. RIP Jason David Frank. May the power protect you.
Man, Y'all are so lucky. The most I ever got with him was getting some responses on Facebook and one time I won a shirt from him that he was giving away in a contest. I could never afford to go to conventions...
@1:04:46 I can tell you what happened to re-power Tommy in Return of an Old Friend. The show itself states, that when he touched the forcefield, it electrically charged him, essentially restoring his powers in a limited capacity. That's the simple short explanation. For the full explanation, now the show doesn't really explain this yet, but it certainly suggests it and becomes a clear and consistent point later in this season and later ones. Your Morphin' Energy is connected to your lifeforce. When you become a Power Ranger, they intertwine and join as one. This is taken to extremes in later seasons, like Lightspeed's Lifeforce Megazord almost killing the Rangers with use, or Venjix exploiting this connection in RPM to essentially "delete" Gem and Gemma from existence by tapping into the Morphin' Grid and removing their Ranger energy. The 2017 movie played on this too with the Ranger's Morphing Energy being used to revive Billy, and Zordon's original plan being to use it to restore his own lifeforce and revive himself. But coming back to MMPR, this connection means Tommy's life force getting charged, would also help charge his Ranger powers - and also explains why he get's so physically weak when his Ranger powers start to falter. Weak powers, weak life force, genuine danger of death. Another final detail people miss. The Green Candle _didn't destroy_ the Green Ranger powers, it was explicitly stated it _stole_ them. Not gone, just relocated. Away from the Green Power Coin and into Rita. This is also why it was important that Jason link the Dragon Coin to his own Tyrannosaurus Coin, to prevent Rita reclaiming and then utilising the powers fully (suit and zord included). Zordon stated it was necessary to stop _her using them again_ . So, the forcefield that re-energized Tommy, was probably created from the very same energy from the Green Power Coin Rita had previously stole via the Green Candle. Essentially letting some of it return to where it belonged when Tommy made physical contact with the forcefield. It's not really relevant yet, but the fact the Green Ranger power was stolen, and not destroyed, is exactly why in Season 2's Return of the Green Ranger, Zedd and Rita can just reactivate the powers just like that. Because all she would need to do is funnel that stolen power back into the coin where it actually belongs. Finally, this is also probably how the Green Rangers powers are working just fine again when Tommy makes guest appearances in later seasons. Rita's defeat at the end of In Space, would probably mean the stolen Green Ranger powers returned to exactly where they belong, because in Power Rangers that's always what happens when a villain or monster is defeated. Whatever curse they placed is lifted, whatever physiological changes they made to an object is reversed, and most importantly here - whatever power they stole is returned to where it belongs. So this is a consistent in-universe explanation following the rules of the universe the show has always taken place in that clearly and consistently explains how the Green Ranger powers eventually return to full strength.
Except Rita and Zed didn’t just reactivate the powers. They had some wizard that created Tom, the clone, restore the candle then place the stolen Dragon coin on top of the coin, just as Jason did to save the others powers from candle, thus restoring the full power of the Green Ranger. Which Tom returns to Tommy when he chooses to stay in the past. They literally copied what Jason had already done.
The episodes where they didn't have Jason, Zack and Trini in their casting roles were some of the saddest episodes looking back on it considering what was going on behind the scenes and how they were replaced but it was done at a gradual pace that it is painful to see it happen. Only funny part was during that Brainwashing episode, Bulk and Skull say out loud "Hail Lord Edd, Hail Lord Edd."
The only thing I don't get is the reused footage from the command center, it doesn't look reused unless I not seeing something. Can you tell me how it's reused when Tommy was in green ?
I suppose that they did well enough, considering the circumstances. The departure of the three actors was not expected, and after one filler episode where they just made do without them, they replaced the actors and then repaired the story. Apparently, it worked well enough, though, because my sister, who was about nine years old during the original airing, didn't have a clue that anything was amiss until the episodes where the characters were finally written out. Then she was heartbroken that her favorite character, Trini, would no longer be on the show.
The interesting thing about Bulk holding the weight lifting record is that he did it without enhanced strength. If I remember correctly. The team got some sort of enhanced strength even without being morphed, just not as much as when they are morphed. Also, the Sentai does have an episode where the Blue and Pink Ranges become gangsters. They even show them stealing money from a drug deal and shooting their way thru the bad guys.
@@diegoantoniofrias9309 well, they don’t even give an explanation to who they are. I know they did some exclamation in the comics, but I’m not sure kids watching the show would know that the show should’ve explained why they should care about the old teams
2:16:30 Just a note here, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight isn't produced by Saban but rather by Adness Entertainment and Toei. Saban however had a planned project named "Power Rider" but was ultimately abandoned around 2014 with not that much info on what it is or why it's abandoned to begin with.
Hey, I like Amazon too. He’s a Tarzan boy with DevilMan powers whose costume is based on a fictitious kind of monitor lizard. He also appears in three manga tie ins.
@@SlapstickGenius23He also got a cool reboot in _Kamen Rider Amazons,_ which combines the mystical power aspect of _Amazon_ with man-made tech to tell a rather dark story with multiple Amazon & Neo Amazon Riders.
The sentai did have an episode where the pink and blue rangers became actually evil. They stole and implied murdered some gangsters, as they locked some in a room and pulled a short sword on them, and actually 'gunned down' a crew of gangsters (they showed blue firing the machine gun but not the men getting hit, obviously). Pink ranger even got a massive tattoo on her chest (that was gone when they returned to normal). Not sure why you didn't know about this and said they didn't do it, but now you know.
@@Koohai That's the magic of Standard Def CRT TVs... You couldn't tell the difference... I had a VHS of the Magna Defender story from Lost Galaxy that I watched the hell out of as a kid... It was also in Black and White due to some glitch in the tape production but that oddly enough made it even WORSE to tell the difference...
It isn’t just the graininess, it’s the acting. Sentai footage is always featuring more exaggerated movements than the American footage because that’s Japanese entertainment. You can really notice this in the modern shows, especially the decently recent Megaforce. They’ll be moving all over the place while the actors dubbing the footage won’t be. There’s a scene near the end of Super Megaforce where they all morph from normal to rangers, but its so awkward because the actors had to match the Sentai footage and do the funny poses the Gokaiger do, very few of them matching the personalities of their characters.
The better the definition got, the more in your face it was. Almost all battle footage was about 2 years older and made with "worse" equipment even if the time frame was the same. I think it is a lot more noticiable in the early 2000s when a lot of cameras started to have digital definition and some early HD stuff. There are points in Time Force's run where I think the difference is at its most noticiable.
I felt that Adam was perhaps the best out of the 3 Ranger members who came into the series mid Season 2. Johnny Young Bosh would later be an Anime VA with a number of casting roles using his tough yet also Shonen voice. Ichigo in Bleach as well as Yukimora Sanada in Sengoku Basara are obvious highlights of his vocal talents. "YUKIMORAHHHHHH!!!!" "YOUR LORDSHIPPPP!!!!" "YUKIMORAHHHHHHHH!!!!" "YOUR LORDSHIPPPP!!!!"
@@TBoneTony you need to remedy that, immediately. Trigun is one of the best witten anime series ever. There's a reason why it's ranked alongside classics like Cowboy Bebop by oldtaku. It's one of those shows that would be impossible to abridge because the humor and story are already the exact type of thing you'd see coming from Something Witty, LittleKuriboh, or Team Four Star.
I love bulk and skull. Fun fact: its canon (at least before hasbro took over) that bulks future descendant is a Power Ranger in Power Rangers Hyper Force ( a twitch/youtube series where the actors play a DnD style Power Rangers game. UA-camr Black Nerd is the blue ranger and Bulks actor played his descendant)
While I never grew up with Mighty Morphin(I was born in 1998, so my first introduction to the franchise was with Wild Force and Ninja Storm), but I still acknowledge it's merits, and how it kind of captured the Early 90s generation. So I would love to see you do retrospectives for Zeo and beyond.
I'm often suprised how young I was when I started watching PR. Being born in 1996, I'm not much older than you are and yet I clearly remember watching Lost Galaxy on tv.
'99, my intro was DinoThunder (which *ruled),* but mighty morphing was on teletoon retro when I was 10 so I used to watch episodes before school all the time
97 here. I had the vhs tape of the first 3 episodes of Wild Force, and watched every episode of Dino Thunder as a kid while waiting for the school bus. It blew my mind when I first saw Forever Red and the clip show in Dino Thunder about previous seasons
Dude, I used to watch your videos when I was 8, I’m fifteen now. It’s crazy to see that you’re still churning these out. Keep up the amazing work, you had a big part in my childhood!
Is anyone here old enough to remember Fox Kids where this show first came on? Fox Kids had Power Rangers, X-Men, Spider-Man, Bobby's World, Goosebumps, and many, many more. They were even the first home for Batman: The Animated Series since Kids WB didn't happen until 1995
Yep I definitely remember I was born in 84 Fox Kids had Power Rangers, X-Men,Spider-Man, Bobby's World, Goosebumps, Silver Surfer,Tiny Toon Adventures,BTAS,MedaBots, also the 1st dubbed versions of Ronin Warriors and Sailor Moon 💯💯💯
In this day and age it’s hard not to know about Super Sentai if you’re a Power Rangers fan. Granted, I don’t think it’s necessary to watch it to review Power Rangers, but addressing it is pretty common now.
Fun video and to answer your question. I believe Audri Dubois left Power Rangers due to the pay not being all that great. I also hear she asked for better pay and they replaced her with Thuy Trang. I believe Karen Ashley left the show because of the hectic production schedule because while they were in MMPR, the adult actors were acting in Zeo. From what I remember it was early morning to late night, so it was just poor working conditions.
Audre Debois did an interview back in 2018 about the real reason why she was replaced by the late Thuy Trang. In short Audre did not want to relocate to Los Angeles from Arizona. ua-cam.com/video/Xwx1Sn05ouk/v-deo.html
After seeing this again it finally clicked: It is so appropriate that Tommy and Kat got together in Zeo, because their romance felt a lot more mature, and they're both kindred spirits due to how they were puppeted by the villains in a prolonged and invasive manner. The thought of them being under those spells while asleep and living with their parents is pretty haunting in hindsight. I wish they expanded on it in Turbo: they came off as living together in that season, but you can't really portray that in a 1990s Fox kids show.
Side tangent: the hatred poor Kat for getting together with Tommy was completely unhinged. Not Star Wars level ridiculous but only because Twitter hadn’t been invented in 1996
OK SO BREAKING BAD IS ODDLY FITTING TO BRING UP HERE! Brian Cranston played two monsters on season one, I wanna say Snizard and the mirror knight guy forgetting the name. And Billy's last name in cannon is Cranston, named after Brian because the crew liked him that much. And Brian Cranston later came back to the franchise in 2017 to play Zordon in the movie
I think everyone who enjoys Power Rangers finds something different they enjoy about it. For me it was a gateway to Super Sentai. I really enjoy the comparisons between the various Sentai and their Power Rangers counterpart seasons. With Seasons of Power Rangers getting shorter and shorter in recent years, and the availability of (some officially) subbed Sentai seasons, it's easier than ever for a Power Rangers fan to explore the original source material.
@@iwakeupandboomimarat well, as in "a whole adapted season", because, as funny and memed as it was, the unexplained powers in Megaforce did turn into different teams that ended up explored in the comics. So the skipped seasons might still be useful in spinoff material and future use of anniversary seasons.
Man, you can really tell the love this creator has for the MMPR series. Really love this video, and although it's not as long a series are Power Rangers, I'd love to see a great long form video like this for Big Bad Beetleborgs.
1:36:50 Goldar should have sang when he was lighting the candles. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YELLOW, BLACK, BLUE AND PINK RANGERS, YOU GONNA LOSE YOUR POWERS REAL SOON" It would have been a terrifying version of the classic birthday song.
sure did, it's a reason today I'm into martial arts & even got into martial arts movies (Van-Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Billy Blanks, Statham, Scott Adkins)
as someone who has seen like two scenes of any power rangers content in her whole life, i am having such a fun time learning about all this for the first time! there’s clearly so much effort, care, and love put into this video, so keep up the great work!!
Power rangers universe apparently more diverse and intresthing than i thought, we got the comic expanding the lore behind the show and yes while the show do have its darker tone (i mean in other power rangers series) its comic are more darker than i tought something that the show limit it and comic have total freedom to show it to its fanbase. One point i must tell you that Saban commisoned toei an additional sentai footage, a footage specially made only for power rangers, these footage are not part of zyurangers and made from japan.
as an ex school janitor there are some messes we are told to leave alone because we are not the kid's maid and the teachers/principle wants to teach the kids a lesson by having them clean it.
Even in Japan! Seriously, the Japanese dub Power Rangers. It’s especially hilarious because some of the dubbed PR seasons have gotten higher ratings than the Sentai seasons they were adapting.
Actually, the Shark Cycles weren't Power Rangers originals...kinda... In Kakuranger, only the Red ranger had the full Shark Cycle, the others had to share motorcycles with side cars. Power Rangers only just made the other colored Shark cycles.
Trini was my crush, Billy was my fav mppr. and I miss JDF. RIP. around age 7 I was gifted a tons of Italian, french and german video tapes by my uncle. This is how I knew about Majokko Megu-chan, Ogon Bat, Wing-man, Lupin III, Jeeg, Yatterman, and grendizer but more importantly I learned about Bioman because I had that one video tape with Black Mask on there. Its Maskman yes, but Bioman 2. Having loved Power rangers I fell in love with it. It wasn't till 2004 that I started looking at Japanese toku like Kuuga with the urine yellow chinese subs, Gransazer, Hurricanger and Dekaranger.
My biggest problem with wild-west Rangers is that it just doesn't make sense that three of the Rangers ancestors are there Rocky Adam and Aisha are from the neighboring town you could make the case that they migrated over to said neighboring Town sometimes between Wild West Rangers and the episode that they're introduced but that feels like a cheap excuse
I’ll speak for anyone who doesn’t has plans on binge watching MMPR, just watch this whole video to save yourself from watching the whole MMPR season (but imo you should watch it along with the rest of the seasons afterwards). I hope @ConnerTheWaffle does the rest of the Power Rangers seasons after this video, great history lesson and depth of MMPR. Also, I don’t blame Conner for skipping Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers LOL, but sadly the Alien Rangers mini parter does have moments which are important to the next season, Power Rangers Zeo. The Rangers as kids went on a mini adventure seperately to retrieve the Zeo Crystals, also the end of MMPR when they turned into kids was Karen Ashley’s final appearance on the show, her character was still intact tho as a kid, but got replaced by Tanya who’s also a kid when Aisha met Tanya on her adventure to find a Zeo Crystal and Aisha discovered her family in Africa which is where they at I assume for Aisha to find the Zeo Crystal and then gave it to Tanya and Aisha stayed put to be with her family. Also, a very important part is Billy being the only person to turned into his form while the kids remain intact till Billy I believe fixed the issue and transformed the Rangers into their form, and Billy ended up saving Alpha from a explosive situation which plays a huge role in Power Rangers Zeo (Not going to Spoil it)
I was alive and can still remember super young me finding out that the actress for the yellow ranger had died 😢..... I still watch it from time to time even the more "childish" episodes, I may be 30 but power rangers helped me through years of depression.... Also no matter the reason or cause I will always be hurt by the knowledge that some of my favorite ranger actors are either dead or have ended someone else
I know I've commented a lot, but I wanted to mention that Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight was actually NOT made by Saban, but another company, Adness Entertainment. Just wanted to clarify that.
Fun fact about the MMPR Movie: Dulcea was originally played by Mariska Hargitay, aka Olivia Benson from Law & Order SVU. She eventually had to drop from the role, though.
MMPR first aired August 28, 1993, and I was born August 28, 1993. Ever since I could walk I’ve been in love with this franchise and it’s always held a special place in my heart, especially after I learned that it and I share the same exact birthday.
Every time you mentioned the rangers obtaining a power or a tool to fight the evil forces of Rita, I'm reminded of the power rangers marathon on twitch from a few years ago and how the chat spammed MOM NEW TOY whenever a new weapon or a zord appeared
ow. I love this show so much. I was in kindergarten when season 1 dropped. My neighbor and I would play "Power Rangers" in our yards together. I was Jason, she was Kimberly, and we'd watch every day and play together after school. We drifted apart as adults, and before I knew what happened she passed away suddenly a few years ago. I wish I could send her this vid.
Damn those last two sentences made your comment really sad. I was also in kindergarten when the show aired, and hearing someone who would have been around my age passing, is just a sad thing. Sorry to hear that.
Fun fact: Lokar, in the original sentai, was just straight up Satan. Or, I guess technically, Dai-Satan, or Great Satan, but still, Satan none the less.
Linkara mentioned this in his history of power rangers but i really didn't notice this until I perused the synopsis for VR troopers (another saban show made around the same time)...........how much free time did early 90's shows think kids had? Every episode the rangers are participating in volunteer work, clubs, sports, charity events, etc. Its just NUTS and it goes ON and ON. How did they have time to save the world on top of everything else they did?
I was born in 2003 and Power Rangers are an integral part of our lives (even though we're not Americans) but at least half of our generation (at least in my country) used to watch Power Rangers.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but a lot of the guest actors were dubbed over with someone else (like Jason's cousin). This was done because of cost. For some strange reason, it's a lot cheaper to pay one person to appear on screen and never speak while also paying someone else to speak but never appear. When I learned that, I couldn't unsee it for tons of people like Jeremy and the little girl in Big Sisters.
Funny thing the comics (which are canon!) Actually explain why Jason, Zack, and Trini left. They were selected (i think) to become the Red, Black and Yellow embarassaries. This are basically a ranger who can watch over the morphing grid and become any ranger of that color
Zack needed that black queen Bulk and Skull disrespecting milfs And the pimp named Billy Smoke demon Tommy Zedd getting goofier Yellow and Black ranger switching races Truly a children’s show
I didn't watch much MMPR until later reruns, but I did gow a love for franchise like so many fans. I got into the franchise during the Disney era, when they would run Wild Force & Lightspeed Rescue all week long, & have Ninja Storm on the weekend. I also saw both Power Rangers movies (honestly prefer the 1st movie over the Turbo movie) & find them a guilty pleasure. It's easy to forget how long this amazing franchise has been running. It would be great if you could do a series by series overview like this 1. Also, maybe you could do some other forgotten Saban shows like Teknoman Blade. The show even has some familiar actors from Power Rangers like Barbara Goodson (Rita herself in a much less screechy voice) & Paul Schrier (Bulk himself, & the actor plays 1 of the best villains in the show & he's amazing at it). Although, when you look up the show, I suggest you avoid the UPN labelled videos on UA-cam. They were from the cancelled American run of the show. The non-UPN episodes aired in Australia, & are honestly better. Much less 90s kids show cringe. The non-UPN dub just has a few different actors (2 as far I can tell) & they do an amazing job with the script.
I really wanted Scorpina to be in the series more especially after her appearance in Season 2. That actress would have been a fine looking Scorpina with a really sharp tongue that was just as deadly as her sting. Sadly the people at Saban were really horrible with their decisions at the time.
I actually have a pretty good theory why they couldn't morph the 1st time they time traveled to the past is because they traveled to a time the power coins weren't activated. The second time worked because Kimberly went to Zordon and activated them early and the coins require the signal from Zordon to work.
It was revealed that Austin Walter and Thuy also had David and Amy on board to not show up for ADR and then Someone who Saban chose to Focus the show on (cough) JDF.
First of all, this video earned my subscription. Very well done. Entertaining. Brings back good memories and nostalgia. To answer your question at 2:29:00 about why Tommy never called Titanus before now, Well Tommy isn't Jason. Jason knew when to summon extra fire power better than Tommy in my opinion. Now on to watch your Zeo video.
Something you didn't point out that's rather interesting, is that all of the actors wanted better pay. Austin, Thuy and Walter even organised an entire cast walk off of the set, with David, Jason and Amy also set to join them....until Saban and Jason went behind their backs. JDF convinced Amy and David not to do the walkout and basically sell out Austin, Thuy and Walter. It's been said (by Austin, I think) that if all of the rangers walked off the set, there was a good chance their pay would have gone up. But since they weren't united, it was easier for Saban to just say "okay...you 3 are out" Honestly, R.I.P JDF...but the guy was a snake. I think his intense dislike of Austin probably motivated him (plus he negotiated with Saban to making him the leader), and Amy and David aren't much better for not standing by their cast mates. The reason for the first Trini actress getting fired? She demanded more money from the get go and was immediately canned and replaced with Thuy
It’s not. While they did plan to walk out with the others, Saban went to JDF, Amy, and David and convinced them to stay. Plus they all knew what happed to Dubois(pilot Trini) and you are dealing with a show based on a show that changes its entire cast every year. So there was that to.
Bro you bringing up “it’s time for molecular transmutation” was like the Winter Soldier activation I am floored by how vividly I suddenly remembered the first time I watched that scene
A while ago I decided to start watching power rangers out of boredom and just finished all of Mighty Morphin and Alien Rangers. Watched this as a way to finish it off
Actually, no, the punk episode's plot was lifted directly from an episode of Zyuranger, right down to which heroes were effected. In fact, the shenanigans that Dan and Mei get up to are WAY worse... (spoilers) ...they straight-up murder some yakuza with machine guns. 🤣
13:10 This is actualy a great idea. If you ever want to have a team fight without a team member just have the crisis come up when a the guy orders a big ice cream. And he is like "Nah, I wont be going this time, you guys can handle it, I am just going to eat this thing" And then the writer can examine the team fight dinamic without the guy. Prety fun stuff
Fantastic video I really hope you cover Zeo although one thing I wish you mentioned was that Snizzard was voiced by Bryan Cranston who later went on to play Zordon in the 2017 movie
Honestly, I think Saban should have kept 'properly' adapting the footage and using the same actors with new suits to maintain continuity. They would have spent a LOT less money and not had to tie themselves in knots to keep using the Zyuranger costumes. Plus the Dairanger costumes were AWESOME. EDIT: The reason Audri DuBois was replaced was she wanted more money, and they told her where to shove it.
Al Gore's rhythm showed me the Zeo video first, I loved it, and then found this. You... you gotta keep goin. When I was a kid I stopped during Zeo, but I definitely want to hear about the rest from you.
Man, i forgot how impactful MMPR was on my childhood. I have a picture of me at 4 yrs old dressed up as the Green Ranger for halloween with the most janky 90s costume you could imagine. This video brings back all of those memories in the best way
This reminds me of the legendary twitch power rangers streams that I tragically missed out on. I wish I could have been a part of chat spamming the Rita emote and laughing at the MILLIONS DEAD spam
44:50 There's been one more kiss in Power Rangers since then, in Dino Fury. Izzy, the Green Ranger, and Fern, her girlfriend, actually share a kiss in "The Matchmaker", roughly 28 years apart from each other. It took them a long-ass time but they broke the curse.
Something you’d probably like to know is that Tommy actually returned in Power Rangers Dino Thunder, and I believe one other series. Bulk was also in Power Rangers Samurai, although I assume it was just a character with a similar name, and not the bulk from this series. One thing I’m wondering is why they didn’t just sub over the Super Sentai footage instead of stitching it with the high school drama stuff.
That is indeed Bulk from MMPR in Samurai. Skull shows up in the final episode. As for Tommy, Dino Thunder is the last full season he appears in. He does make cameos in Wild Force, SPD, Super Megaforce and Ninja Steel.
@@greenrangerdeloreanin SPD, he was played by one of the other actors from Dino Thunder. Which bothered me for the longest time bc it was his last appearance for almost ten years
Hawaii had subbed Super Sentai on air (80s era), but that mostly appealed to the Japanese community in Hawaii. Saban wanted a show to appeal to mainstream American kids. I'm not so sure an all Japanese superhero team would interest middle America suburban children.
Fun fact. The reason why the dragon shield is always inconsistent is because the original dragon shield from the sentai show got damaged in shipping, so the cloth dragon shield was born.
I would absolutely love to see a video like this for every incarnation of Power Rangers, even though I've only actually seen Mighty Morphin' and Zeo. I'm a British 2000s kid so I literally only heard of Power Rangers because of it's popularity. Maybe you could do the same for Super Sentai, I know there's like 200 series of that so it probably won't happen, but it'd be cool
I’m a power rangers fan through and through. Would love to know your thoughts on stuff like Beetleborgs or VR Troopers or Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad in the future if you do more toku centric videos
I really enjoyed this video and I hope you do retrospectives on other Power Ranger seasons very soon at least the rest of the Zordon era would be ideal to me, personally (feel free to go as far as you like after that though I would gladly watch.) I would love to hear your opinion on Jason’s return in Zeo and the psycho rangers arch in in space specifically.
Fun fact by the way about Zack and how you said he could do better: In the Boom comics, they actually have him hook up with Trini, as we actually see what happens to them after they left for the "Peace Conference" in Season 2
i always thought richie was introduced in season 2 in order to be a red herring for the white ranger reveal much in the same tommys brother was a red herring for the gold ranger in zeo...but i guess them just dropping the story involving him due to thuy leaving the show makes sense as well....maybe it was a combonation of both
You 1 million% should do more of this. I grew up watching rangers and this helped a lot with remembering old good memories that I thought were gone. Take your time with them of course and focus on your health. ... But when you get to Operation Overdrive give it to me easy if it ends up being bad I remember loving that show.

You NEED to stop accepting the absolute worst, most obvious scams in human history as sponsors, pretending to like them and putting them in the middle of the video NOW. I'm tired of disliking and reporting good videos
A lot
I wouldn't mind if you covered Zeo-In Space in a video that would be nice.
You never explained the bad blood between the actors behind the scenes despite alluding to it.
Hearing "the late JDF" will never not hurt. No celebrity death has hit or stuck with me the way his has, especially given the circumstances. Was a childhood hero and I'll always be grateful for that.
Sad note aside, really enjoyed this retrospective.
I had to throw a blanket over the stuff I have on display for a few months.
Seriously, I still tear up at the mere mention of his death. My soul doesn't want to accept it.
@@theblackwidower It's a surprisingly common phenomenon, where people of creativity or celebrity cling to it as an outlet for some form of mental illness (depression, anxiety, etc.) There is a reason that historically both artists and actors were viewed as 'eccentrics' by society at large.
ikr RIP JDF.
Thuy Trang's story genuinely makes me sad. Here's this very charming person who has overcome so much, only to be tragically killed at only 27. It's awful 😔
I found out late about her death as well....

The original and only yellow ranger
She actually was the most likely of tte bunch to get to A lister status. She was in the best crie sequel movie. Amy jo went the silver screen route and was pretty sucessful. I could have seen her in charlize angels and kil bill.
It’s life
If you liked Jason, Zack, and trini. You’ll be happy to know that in the comics, they actually went on to become a new trio of rangers after their departure. With a better explanation on why the three left, and why Tommy was made leader.
That's kinda cool
I am thinking about looking into that one since we are going to have a supposed hiatus in 2024, due to the strikes going on now.
Plus there is a lightning collection set of the 4.
It's cool. But That still leaves their story in the tv continuity unaccounted for.
Yeah, that was a fun idea, the 30th special could of slipped in some explanation but nope. Comics universe might be the best, especially with trini getting a ranger promotion even.
I love how everyone just agrees that Billy was a nerd for like 10 episodes and then just gets ridiculously hot/badass
David Yost was always built like a house, they just stopped trying to hide it.
Taking off glasses in a television show or movie will do that for any actor. Apparently.
Especially with all the ladies he's pulled. I swear, bro has a harem at this point.
The man was Hood-tactular.
He's Daniel Jackson before Daniel Jackson. From SG1. Not the movie
There is a theory that Tommy is his own ancestor, since the clone stayed in the 1700s
My immediate thought was that's how Rita gets the green power coin for Tommy in the present
That makes sense tbh
Whoooooaaahh that’s why even as a kid he kicks 10 kinds of ass
So futurama copied power rangers for shame
Since Tommy is adopted, as revealed by his brother David Trueheart, there could be other Rangers who are descended from Tommy's clone.
Sounds interesting
Mei*
If anything, the only missed opportunity in both the US and Sentai versions is not seeing the morphed Blue & Pink Rangers acting all punkish. I'm honestly a sucker for seeing the morphed Rangers acting out of character in an episode where they get brainwashed or whatever.
Except this criminal underworld was visual gag.
Ironically both Mei and Dan should be in high school since they were 17 in their show.
Same here. I met JDF at Edmonton Expo, and got my Dragon Dagger and Saba Sword signed by him, along with a photo.
I will always treasure them forever.
Lucky for me, I met JDF as well and I also met Amy Jo Johnson at the same convention, but they were separate booths. Still was a awesome experience.

@@robertrogers074If you watch the earlier episodes, you will see that reused footage from when it was new.
Actually skull says " hail Lord bread" lol
I suppose that they did well enough, considering the circumstances. The departure of the three actors was not expected, and after one filler episode where they just made do without them, they replaced the actors and then repaired the story. Apparently, it worked well enough, though, because my sister, who was about nine years old during the original airing, didn't have a clue that anything was amiss until the episodes where the characters were finally written out. Then she was heartbroken that her favorite character, Trini, would no longer be on the show.
@@truckercowboyed2638 It was actually "Hail Lord Fred" on Skull's part. Because Skull.
Haim Saban: we can replace any of the actors

Just a note here, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight isn't produced by Saban but rather by Adness Entertainment and Toei.
Saban however had a planned project named "Power Rider" but was ultimately abandoned around 2014 with not that much info on what it is or why it's abandoned to begin with.
The Masked Rider was supposed to look like a bug, since all Kamen Riders up to that point, with the exception of Amazon, were all themed after insects
Hey, I like Amazon too. He’s a Tarzan boy with DevilMan powers whose costume is based on a fictitious kind of monitor lizard. He also appears in three manga tie ins.
@@SlapstickGenius23He also FUCKING TEARS PEOPLE IN HALF JESUS CHRIST!
Amazon is great! I'm just saying that he's the only Showa Rider not themed after an insect, but rather a monitor lizard.
@@praxedisrodriguez5545 not piranha?
Power rangers always looks clean until you actually KNOW that some footage is borrowed.
Then it’s impossible to not notice
Definitely. I rewatched MMPR and now I can't unnotice when people are suddenly driving on the wrong side of the road.
I always noticed how grainy the Sentai footage was compared to the American footage.

@@TBoneTony you need to remedy that, immediately. Trigun is one of the best witten anime series ever. There's a reason why it's ranked alongside classics like Cowboy Bebop by oldtaku.

Didn't actually play the suit actors but yeah he voiced 2 monsters
I think everyone who enjoys Power Rangers finds something different they enjoy about it.
For me it was a gateway to Super Sentai. I really enjoy the comparisons between the various Sentai and their Power Rangers counterpart seasons.
With Seasons of Power Rangers getting shorter and shorter in recent years, and the availability of (some officially) subbed Sentai seasons, it's easier than ever for a Power Rangers fan to explore the original source material.
plus the amount of skipped seasons that are very unlikely to be used now
@@iwakeupandboomimarat well, as in "a whole adapted season", because, as funny and memed as it was, the unexplained powers in Megaforce did turn into different teams that ended up explored in the comics.

Damn those last two sentences made your comment really sad. I was also in kindergarten when the show aired, and hearing someone who would have been around my age passing, is just a sad thing. Sorry to hear that.
In India, this MMPR aired on Sonic Nickelodeon in 2012 and I played the same way with my sister back then.
Fun fact: Lokar, in the original sentai, was just straight up Satan.
Or, I guess technically, Dai-Satan, or Great Satan, but still, Satan none the less.
And Daizyuujin is technically God
Linkara mentioned this in his history of power rangers but i really didn't notice this until I perused the synopsis for VR troopers (another saban show made around the same time)...........how much free time did early 90's shows think kids had? Every episode the rangers are participating in volunteer work, clubs, sports, charity events, etc. Its just NUTS and it goes ON and ON. How did they have time to save the world on top of everything else they did?
What time is it?
Millennials: It's morphin time!
Gen X: It's time to duel!
Gen Z: Adventure time!
Uh. I really don't think Gen X was the Yu-Gi-Oh! demographic, bro.
I was born in 2003 and Power Rangers are an integral part of our lives (even though we're not Americans) but at least half of our generation (at least in my country) used to watch Power Rangers.
Lol I'm Gen Z and I would respond with It's Morphin Time!
Well yes they left but became the omega rangers not the emissaris
As far as we know it's not Canon to the show, otherwise in once a ranger they would have had their Omega powers. Instead of the dino powers. 🤷♂️
Zack needed that black queen
Bulk and Skull disrespecting milfs
And the pimp named Billy
Smoke demon Tommy
Zedd getting goofier
Yellow and Black ranger switching races
Truly a children’s show
I didn't watch much MMPR until later reruns, but I did gow a love for franchise like so many fans.
"Rocky Just Wants To Have Fun" is another MMPR episode I have on VHS.
I really wanted Scorpina to be in the series more especially after her appearance in Season 2.
That actress would have been a fine looking Scorpina with a really sharp tongue that was just as deadly as her sting.
Sadly the people at Saban were really horrible with their decisions at the time.
Only at the time?
I actually have a pretty good theory why they couldn't morph the 1st time they time traveled to the past is because they traveled to a time the power coins weren't activated. The second time worked because Kimberly went to Zordon and activated them early and the coins require the signal from Zordon to work.
It was revealed that Austin Walter and Thuy also had David and Amy on board to not show up for ADR and then Someone who Saban chose to Focus the show on (cough) JDF.
Proof?
But since they weren't united, it was easier for Saban to just say "okay...you 3 are out"
Honestly, R.I.P JDF...but the guy was a snake.
I had never heard that about david amy and JDF planning to walk but JDF convincing them otherwise.
Never heard that story but definitely shitty if true
I want a Zeo, Turbo and In space deep dive. Who's up for it?👇
I am
A while ago I decided to start watching power rangers out of boredom and just finished all of Mighty Morphin and Alien Rangers. Watched this as a way to finish it off
Doctor K is really upset you called their suits spandex
Actually, no, the punk episode's plot was lifted directly from an episode of Zyuranger, right down to which heroes were effected. In fact, the shenanigans that Dan and Mei get up to are WAY worse...
(spoilers)
...they straight-up murder some yakuza with machine guns.
I have asked Karen Ashley about why she left. She said (after drinking an energy drink) that it was a money issue.
the dragonzord is actually based on godzilla/mechagodzilla
Makes sense
Honestly, I think Saban should have kept 'properly' adapting the footage and using the same actors with new suits to maintain continuity. They would have spent a LOT less money and not had to tie themselves in knots to keep using the Zyuranger costumes. Plus the Dairanger costumes were AWESOME.
EDIT: The reason Audri DuBois was replaced was she wanted more money, and they told her where to shove it.
I've read before that Saban were worried a costume change would put kids off and might kill the show
Al Gore's rhythm showed me the Zeo video first, I loved it, and then found this. You... you gotta keep goin.
This video brings back all of those memories in the best way
Aside from the pink ranger, I also remember Amy Jo Johnson from the crime drama show Flashpoint as Jules
This reminds me of the legendary twitch power rangers streams that I tragically missed out on. I wish I could have been a part of chat spamming the Rita emote and laughing at the MILLIONS DEAD spam
I want a spin-off series of all the monsters of the weeks in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Bro Zach is immortal! Walter looks like he barely aged a day when you look at
him today.

There's been one more kiss in Power Rangers since then, in Dino Fury. Izzy, the Green Ranger, and Fern, her girlfriend, actually share a kiss in "The Matchmaker", roughly 28 years apart from each other. It took them a long-ass time but they broke the curse.
Tommy and Kimberly kiss in the Christmas episode in Season 3 of MMPR. So it's 26 years.
Hearing Kimberly scream when her grandmother's wheel broke sent chills down my back! *shudders* dont mess with the pink ranger.
Omg, seeing that footage of the unaired Power Rangers pilot triggered a core memorie for me. I remember watching that on VHS as a kid.
I’m a power rangers fan through and through. Would love to know your thoughts on stuff like Beetleborgs or VR Troopers or Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad in the future if you do more toku centric videos
As someone who's binged the whole franchise I'd LOVE a video for each series
I really enjoyed this video and I hope you do retrospectives on other Power Ranger seasons very soon
at least the rest of the Zordon era would be ideal to me, personally
(feel free to go as far as you like after that though I would gladly watch.)
I would love to hear your opinion on Jason’s return in Zeo and the psycho rangers arch in in space specifically.
*also spoilers for a 26 year old show if anyone hadn’t seen Zeo yet and doesn’t know Jason was back*
My bad LOL
Fun fact by the way about Zack and how you said he could do better: In the Boom comics, they actually have him hook up with Trini, as we actually see what happens to them after they left for the "Peace Conference" in Season 2
i always thought richie was introduced in season 2 in order to be a red herring for the white ranger reveal much in the same tommys brother was a red herring for the gold ranger in zeo...but i guess them just dropping the story involving him due to thuy leaving the show makes sense as well....maybe it was a combonation of both
also, hell yes i want zeo....and turbo and in space....and the merch video
You 1 million% should do more of this. I grew up watching rangers and this helped a lot with remembering old good memories that I thought were gone. Take your time with them of course and focus on your health.
... But when you get to Operation Overdrive give it to me easy if it ends up being bad I remember loving that show.
For me Power Ranger is the TV version of Drop Shipping.
