Correction: I have the wood in the Grand Staircase stained a darker color in the 1920 comparison, but in fact, this was not the case. Certain photographs of the ship taken in 1920 (including ones of the staircase) are generally darker than those taken by Welch earlier in the ship's career, hence the misconception.
You're probably right, but the problem with photos is that very few of them were dated, so noone really knows when a particular photo was taken and what changes were made and on what date.
@@Embracing01 Some photos are dated, and others can be discerned just by studying what's in the photo. For instance, in the Grand Staircase photo I mentioned just above, it's cited as being from 1920, but other than that, the new floor tiles that were installed after the war are visible in the photograph, and and the paneling is visibly unpainted wood, so it's from before the paneling had been done in green. Thus, even without the citation, we would be able to discern that the photo was taken some time during the 1920's.
@@TechnologicallyTechnical Thanks for that, I always assumed the tiled floor in the Grand Staircase was from 1911. Do you know what date/year the photos are of Olympic when she is at New York harbour where it shows the forecastle deck and there are clothes draped over the railings?.
@@Embracing01 The staircase had tiles in 1911, they were just different from the ones she had after the war.
I believe the photo you're describing is from 1911.
@@TechnologicallyTechnicalThanks for that. If the photo is from 1911 then I don't think it's from the maiden voyage as in the photo there are small flags hanging from the masts which went from the bow, but the maiden voyage photos showing Olympic entering New York harbour don't show them. I know Olympic made about 4 crossings before the Hawke collsion so it maybe from one of those dates.
I've noticed that the forecastle deck kept changing as well at different times. In the photo I mentioned the forecastle deck appears to be quite cluttered, there are a few vents that are either missing in other photos or have been changed. There is also a photo showing the forecastle deck dated the 5th July 1913 and it many of the deck fittings aren't there. Also in the above mentioned photo I think it may show Capt Smith, the build and height seems about right for Smith.
I don't really like the green staircase but the grey railings and the gold accents on the wood looks great because It adds some detail to the staircase. Imagine the brown staircase with that 😳
The reason why they made the Grand Staircases green was because White Star wanted make it resemble the Art Deco designed interiors that were appearing on ships in the early 1930s.
Green elevators would work well, but also filling in the gaps in the banisters *i.e like Queen Mary's staircase* would make her more modern
i respect your opinion but i really like the green one
In my opinion, I think the green grand staircase looks
H I D E O U S
Yeah it literally doesn't fit with the ship
You and me both, love. That paint had to be on sale, 97% off. 😬
I definitely agree. Stomach churning. I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to paint all of that lovely teak panelling.
for me the green looks not bad i kinda like it more than the normal wood
I think the staircase looks better in natural wooden colours than it did painted green but I like the new elevator doors added in the next bit at 1:18.
@denniswilson8013Oh, yeah. They are there in black but barely visible. Well spotted.
I'd say 1920 is when she is at her best. The turquoise lino, modernised interiors, and larger public spaces. 1934 is a close second though. Just love the green staircase and art deco styling.
the *ultimate* comparison that i didn’t even know i needed. :)
Do one of Aquitania's and Lusitania's public rooms. Those rooms definitely aren't the same, but you can see similarities in their designs when you look at them side by side.
There so comparable inded because Cunard mustly used bright interiors for Lusitania then the Aquitania because it was more beloved by the passengers rather than Mauretania’s wood dark interiors
A mi me gusta el Mauritania mas que el lusitania
E
To be honest i don't like green staircase i prefer dark wood like in 1913 and 1920
I didn't know they just made the wood darker after the war. That's surprising!
I also didn't know that, very interesting
Indeed! The evidence available suggests that varnish had been added to the grand staircase panels around 1920. This is consistent with certain photographs, as the grand staircase generally has a darker appearance in photos from that time period.
CORRECTION: The above information is inaccurate, the aforementioned evidence are photographs taken in 1920 which have a generally darker appearance, but that's on the part of the photos themselves, not the actual wood.
@@TechnologicallyTechnical that’s such a nice detail! I’ve played your games a hundred times, yet I never noticed that!
@@AndyHappyGuy a link to the game please
Optically all changes were for the worse for me, especially a green painted oak staircase... 🤦♂️
You may not like the green staircase very much, but I think it is a luxury of great fortune
What was the new room they added at 1:39? It looked like it used to have a hallway with doors for staterooms until it got removed for a new room. From the back it looks like the a la carte restaurant, but I could be wrong. Didn't they also expanded eventually after titanic sank?
+Lucky That's the reception room for the restaurant. And yes, the restaurant was expanded in the same refit as when the restaurant reception room was added.
Interesting. See the Olympic got a Cafe too. So neat. Thanks for this very enjoyable 😉.
1:00 I...ahewf...why did that become a thing 🥴
Ill probably get so much hate in here but, i think green looks good in the grand Staircase.
I like it too, those who don't like it hate change, the green where unpainted oak once was looks terrible to them.
If I were to rebuild Olympic, I'd paint the aft grand staircase in the 30's livery just to get at them.
@@LexLucario7922 those who don’t like it probably don’t hate change so much as they hate green. ;)
I like it too. Maybe even better.
Same i dont understand why they hate it tho maybe there just not use to the color tone of it but to me it looks pretty nice
@@mr.juniii5523 Olympic's and Titanic's interiors were quite conservative even around 1911 and kind of safe choice, so 20 years later they seemed just plain old-fashioned, especially considering fast-paced changes of 20th century, including tastes and fashions and 20s art-deco aesthetics. We nowadays looking at the grand staircase more than 100 years later don't see it unfashionable because we are too far removed in time. It looks like some classic to us. Even I have gotten bored with its brown panelling just by seeing it as this all my life, so green seems like some kind of relief.
Didn't know that they gave her the same carpet design for Britannic
they did because its the cheepest way to change her carpeting since her former one is filthey due to the soldiers walking about during the great war the flooring that where never installed in britannic where instead installed on olympic like hall way floor the staircase floor the smoking room and more
not carpet; it was linoleum tiles.
+excuse me but... The grand staircase actually consisted of linoleum instead of carpeting. The only public spaces with carpeting on Olympic were the writing room, the first class lounge, the restaurant, the second class library, and the reception room.
Those were the tiles of Britannic. Literally, before Britannic's war service they ripped out her tiles. After Britannic sank, they recycled the spare tiles for Olympic.
@@TechnologicallyTechnical ah i forgot linoleum not carpeting :/
Is the 1913 and 1920 version on Roblox I can't seem to find it anywhere I only found the 1911 and the 1930's version
It's on his extras profile

@@mr.juniii5523 I already know, but thanks anyway
What is that room added near 2nd class entrance at 0:46?
It's described as a "Marconi Telephone Transmitting Room"
Supposedly it received and printed images wirelessly, from what I understand.
@@TechnologicallyTechnical How are they supposed to get people into those second lifeboats when the space is so Cluttered???
@@angieroxy7550 Assuming there'd be enough time, they'd have to attach those to the davits after lowering the other ones. But honestly, it was probably mostly just to make passengers feel safer in the wake of the Titanic disaster. Both Olympic and the Aquitania absolutely cluttered their decks with boats in the years following the Titanic disaster, but after WWI had ended, both ships reduced the number of lifeboats on board, so that the decks weren't cluttered, but so that there was still enough for everyone on board.
@@TechnologicallyTechnical Yeah. I see smaller Lifeboat ontop of the Bigger one, so I can imagine how difficult it would be to board the smaller lifeboat when that Bigger one would be blocking the Way. Same thing with Britannic...¬
@@TechnologicallyTechnical And if you look at the 1913 Version at 0:37, there are 4 Boats!!! That would be Extremely Difficult to Launch with so many People around ! Especially with the Collapsible Lifeboats underneath the Main Lifeboats !
I think it's a concept from luxury transatlantic ships from the 1900s, I wish it was like that until today, you know I loved the concept of green staircases, Such a pure and beautiful color to put on a wooden staircase. And a wood of pure luxury and solid, it was already a luxury to travel on these luxurious Transatlantics at that time, including on the Olympic
....and here i was thinking you were saying these were images generated in the 1900s......not my brightest moment
If she was a floating hotel she would be famous with the public if she was a floating museum or a hotel and people would love her spaces on the ship and she would be the 1997 titanic film and she would be more famous than titanic
What happened to the second class entrance at 0:47?
+C H Two rooms were added at the aft end of the boat deck flanking the second class entrance, which Olympic's 1935 auction catalogue describes as Marconi Telephone Receiving Rooms. I'm not sure what specific purpose they served.
Please also make the video as
RMS Olympic 1911 vs RMS Olympic 1917 as a troopship which painted as camoufladge including the interior of the ship
What music did you use, really catchy
April Showers
honestly, i'd prefer the 1934 Olympic!
The best comparison so far
They really changed the tile from the white with black accents to the Light blue and red tile?
Hands down, 1934 is the allerbest.
Why disnt the olympic just become a floatimg hotel like rms queen mary?
The Great Depression.
Cool

What’s this song?
Maybe if the Titanic didn't sink and made it the 1930s too, would she have her grand staircase painted white? I thought about this when I remember Michael Brady's video about what would happen if the Titanic didn't sink. Maybe the white and yellow grand staircase would be more reminiscent of the Edwardian era and cater to the traditional and old money passengers.
Anyhow I love the colour green so I was so happy when I found out about Olympic's green staircase
Ummm Roblox?
In my opinion, the green staircases were perfect, it made a nice change, you know? Like the color of nature, this made the difference between the ship and the Titanic would probably receive this luxurious and beautiful tone If I hadn't been shipwrecked
and the green with the black tones were Perfect! I want to build ships when I grow up in the 1900s styles because I love this style and of course I will be inspired by the Olympic Class because of the Oak luxuries, etc., and I will clearly add the green tone to the staircases!
White star line after the sinking of Titanic: AH YES SAFETY ADD MORE LIFEBOATS THEN THE MAX CAMPACITY OF 5 OLYMPICS
In mybopinion 1920 Olimpic was the best. I dont like green one(but some details of 1934 are great)
0:37 tf is up with that pancake looking lifeboat 💀
It's a collapsible lifeboat, which was pretty much exactly that, a pancaked lifeboat (the sides would sort of fold up from the rim when in use)
Interesting comparison. But the original white painted "vent" (or whatever it was) in the first image which was on top of the wheelhouse from 1911 actually got replaced in March 1912 when Olympic was brought into Belfast for its propeller blade replacement following an accident. Photos taken by Robert Welch on the 2nd March show the original fitted vent in the famous photos of both Olympic and Titanic together, then on the 6th March when Olympic was moved on the other side of the graving dock she now had a new, swan neck vent fitted which was still yet to be painted. Then on the 7th March, photos taken by John Kempster (those are the sepia photos released about 10 years ago - known as the Bell and Kempster collection) show this new vent now painted white. It is abit of a mystery why Olympic had this vent replaced considering she was there for urgent repairs to her propeller blades and also that she had only been in service for about 10 months. Did a vent need replacing that quick?.
+Embracing01 The ventilation on Olympic in her first few months proved inefficient, and so when she was being repaired after her collision with the HMS Hawke, White Star/Harland and Wolff decided to take the opportunity to make some tweaks, including replacing each of the original swan neck vents with the larger variants that you see in photos from 1912 onward.
This may surprise people, but 1934 is the best. The green wood gives it a different feel, and the Art Deco Parisian Cafe is truly beautiful.
i Did not see this coming you made my day better matt :)
im glad that they fixed the wheel house
What was wrong with it?
@@chriscohea2817 it just looked to round
@@FazbearEntertainment414 I think it looks more sleek.
Who even had the idea to paint the grand staircase green in the 30s??
Is it just me of does the barber shop next to to the grand staircase feel familiar
Cool so far!
The bigger question is what they did with the giant third class. Those kinds of ships were built to ferry millions of poor immigrants from Europe to the US in cattle car conditions. By 1934 the US immigration slowed to almost nothing.
+vladchan Olympic still had third class accommodations, they were just in the forward end of the ship, while the aft third class accommodations had been given to Tourist Class.
0:17 I wonder what happened to cause this sudden change. All those boats really spoil the view of the ocean.
A law. The law was changed to make sure there were enough boats for everyone on board. This was enacted after the Titanic disaster who only installed the bare minimum number of boats, not taking to account the number of passengers on board.
Literally the titanic sank the year prior I think you know why they did this
@@_ssc__ I think that was the joke.
I agree with Diblrken giving the fact her sister titanic sunk in 1912 with the loss of many people due to not enough lifeboat for everyone.
Hello Matt, I'm currently building a 1/360 scale RMS Olympic in her 1930s, I am keen to see a full view of your 1934 3D model and study the changes to her Boat Deck and possibly the Well Decks and Foc'sle deck and Poop Deck. Is there a way I could have a look at that? Thank you for your time !

@@TechnologicallyTechnical thank you! You are a life-saver! XD I just started exploring the bridge and looking out at the foc'sle deck and see there's a lot of ventilation fans to add on my model build.
