Lyrics:
Saw it in a store one day
Thought it might make me play
Future music all for you
Seen me through my hardest times
Thought it was 'bout time
To open up a new world just for you
Fills all my needs, gave me the key
Door was open, for me to see
Playin' around the world
Touchin' all the boys and girls
With a new love to make them free
Kalimba, oh Kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, oh Kalimba, I'm glad I found you
Kalimba, oh Kalimba, play me a tune
Kalimba, oh Kalimba, sends a message to you
Music video by Earth, Wind & Fire performing Kalimba Story (Audio). (C) 1974 Columbia Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment
Maurice sure did love That Kalimba. And Ole Verdine White was Mean with Them Basslines.
This was a party jam during my Senior year in 1974 at NC A&T.
Still feeling it 🤣
This is one of my favorite songs and my husband is an EWF fanatic!!! He even found a Kalimba in a thrift store, got so excited and started playing it in the store, and then of course he had to purchase it!!!
That's great. 😊 I'm a Earth wind & Fire fan too since I was just a little kid and I know the feeling. God bless
That's how Maurice started playing kalimba, found it in a store one day.
Classic first line of the song!
Beautiful instrument! I have too!
Tougher on the thumbs than expected!
Outside of Duke Ellington’s orchestra in the jazz idiom, EWF is the greatest ensemble in African-American music. This song introduced an African instrument to pop music. Genius!
... plus some funky rock & roll guitar on top of it!
EWF was their own genre!! ❤️
Nah, they were just one of many--and there were a lot them
Nobody could touch EWF in the seventies best band with out a doubt
Cant say that it was too many
The hottest band in 70 80 and 90 hit and more hits
They were one of the best, not THE best. It's a matter of opinion. Easily top 5 though. Again, it's a matter of opinion.
@@jamesgraham3116 I can agree with that some band or group don’t have longevity if you have a ten years or more in the music industry you done really well 🎶🎶🎶🎶
The 70's had the most funk/ r&b bands goin at it. Great times!
I'm 19 and learning to play the Kalimba and my Grandma recommended this song because of the Kalimba. It's a nice song and I smiled when I heard the kalimba being played in the background.
Check out Power, Bad tune. Departure, and Happy Feeling. Keep practicing
Also Drum Song
I am learning the Kalimba also. Love this song 💝
How's it going with your journey "Wide Awake"?
You couldn’t have chosen a better song. If you wanna be great listen to the great. The masters…
Maurice White S.I.H. Singing in the heavenly band now.....EWF music will never grow old....
Earth wind and fire there is nothing like them their music has meaning one of a kind. The EWF concerts are the best.
Yes 👏🏾
This song is simply a rhythm section clinic. The way Verdine's bassline is locked in with the drums is like a freight train.
One of my all time favorite cuts still jamming this in 2022 !! 😎
23 baby ✌️
Yeszzss
Aa
March 2024!!
This original EWF is what I loved about the 70s. Such complex intermixed textural elements that you just don’t get in music today. The harmony and key changes are genius! I miss this music so much but thank you for reminding me that it’s still here.
This is how I grew up and fell in love with this group. Cleaning up the house on Saturdays....windows open...record player jamming...just cleaning until Soul Train came on at 11am on WGN....MEMORIES
Same here family, sounds like you are from Chicago or the midwest
I'm with yall. I grew up in Englewood, Chicago. My dad used to jam the 70s music. EWF is untouchable. Lyric, music, content, arrangement, voices: these guys had it all!!!
Groups like EWF were so underrated back then, this was the era I grew up in, & we had the best music EVER!! I'm a boomer baby!! Wouldn't trade that time for anything!
I totally disagree with EW&F being underrated they one of the most popular groups doing the seventies please name a musical group that was more popular.
This was the jam in the 70s! Still vibes
this song went to #6 on the R&B charts in 1974!!!
Childhood mannnnn..... i was 5 with this game out I remember this and yearning learning. This is when i was first introduced to the elements.. I definitely remember those two playing on the radio.. Yearning learning was my favorite that song used to get me hyped
1974 I graduated from high school. Love mes some EWF
One of the many reasons to love EWF,and Maurice White
Cool
I love this song. When I think of or hear this song it takes me way back;
back in time to the days when there were often block parties. At those
block parties everyone had a joyous time. It did not matter whether you
had a partner with you when you got there. You could dance with someone
else"s partner. All you needed to say was ' EXCUSE ME, may I have this dance?
It was just that easy. There was never any fussing, arguing, or fighting. Everyone there
had one common goal, to have a good time, and that"s just what everyone there did. Everyone had a good time.
Oh how I missed those ' GOOD OLD DAYS ". Where have they gone?
Righty oh indeed!! I too remember the time of
"LOVE, PEACE AND, SOUL!!!" ✊🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Kalimba sounds has that spiritual sound that connects us to our Ancestors. It can't be explained it's in our DNA.❤️❤️❤️
Goggle " Mbira "
this sound of this song scared me as a child like I had a connection to it in a bad way.
Baby, to have seen Maurice actually work a Kalimba in concert was a dream come true. The sexy gyrating that accompanied it gave me heart palpitations!❤️❤️❤️
Kalimba, Oh Kalimba! Play Me A Tune! On the LP: Open Our Eyes, "Kalimba Story" is the follow up single, issued in June of '74! Maurice & Verdine wrote it; charting on 7/06/74; 12 weeks, peaking at #6 R&B, #55 Pop! The stats are in the A&R portion of "The Essential Earth, Wind And Fire", a double CD compilation (2002)!!
This sacred music, befo its times' , gots me locked in the funk..and subsequently, wont let go...
Let’s work 🔥🔥🎶🎶
This when I fell in love with the kalimba as a kid.
Me too!! I finally bought one
Me too 1974 👍🏻🇬🇧
This group right here was like no other! Forty plus yr old music sounding it like it just came out!
A, NICE CLASSY OLD SCHOOL 70'S JAM FROM E.W.F.
Love this song! It takes me back..way back. Good memories.
This tune tells the story of the Kalimba by The Elements
wow i was just entering high school when this great song came out we played it all night at the party.oo wee i am 60 and i still love all EWF great songs.
I am 54 and will groove to the Elements until I leave this world.
I saw them do this song and many others in the Municipal Auditorium, New Orleans, I was 16yrs old (47 yrs ago)..loved EWF members! Maurice White, was the soul and hear of EWF!
Terri Boyd, what did you think of Illumination, the album that came out in 2005? It didn't get much attention, but I thought it was a spectacular return to their classic sound, mixed with a bit of the contemporary. I got so excited that I bought several copies and sent them to old friends and family. Not much reaction from them.
@@rhondabland923 I was still 15 - went to Experience EWF - supporting Santana in Birmingham UK 🇬🇧 What a First Gig! 💥
The definition of a rhythm section clinic! Man! This proves to me that a bands deep cuts are usually their better songs. Verdine kills this!
Ryan Hall He learned from one of the best, Mr. Cleveland Eaton, who was also apart of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, along with Maurice. Cleveland Eaton has an up tempo cut, called "ChiTown Theme"....smoking...check it out!
G. Brown: Man, you ain't kiddin! ChiTown Theme cooks with rocket fuel! I know Verdine learned from Lou Satterfield, the original trombone player with the Phenix Horns too. And I'm sure his big brother influenced him more than a little bit.
Verdine is so under-rated for his contribution to that sound. So bad-ass.
I saw them three times . once when I was 17 and the other times in my sixties. When I saw them the first time there were no sound man. You heard everything including the vocals and the bass. In my sixties you could hardly hear Verdine. When he did a bass solo it went down and you could hardly hear him. They had sound men at both concerts. Earth Wind and Fire are a bass heavy group was the thing in the 60's 70's and 80's. If you want to hear bass heavy music go into a night club because I talk to the sound man and they said it dosent sound right. I play both bass and guitar and keyboard and trombone and played in outside concerts. He stolen my enjoyment when I didnt hear Verdine White. I heard Larry Graham wants his bass turn up. It dose sound right
Still a banger!!!
Oh yeah. A song about one of my favorite instruments in the world.
This song was fantastic!!!!
This song is beautiful and it reminds me of summer time
Yes...decades later and still loving this.
Yes, me too. Along with Sun goddess.
My Poppz passed away today this was his song... His anthem.. 4-20-23.. 🚬 🚭 😤 💨 🌬
This is where it all began....the deep, sophisticated funk introduce itself to me through this jam,... at a very young age.
Kalimba!. Yea! baby!. Smile!. Time to cook and eat! and play the jams!. Smile! again!. Take care.
Whoever's singing lead vocals on "Kalimba Story" is killing it.
Maurice White torn that Kalimba up!!! Loved it, use to do the dance called The Bump wouldn’t try it now LOLLL 🤣🤣🤣
Roosevelt mccarter its maurice white the founder of ewf singing the lead.
Daymn Right he Was!
It's Maurice😉
Anybody who has Philip Bailey in their band and still sings is an idiot.
I danced on a rooftop to this song!
Go Jo 👍🏻
Kalimba Story I definitely remember this song by earth wind and fire. WBLS played this song every now and then but really not that much. My older sister had all of earth wind and fire albums. She definitely indeed was a very big fan of earth wind and fire.
I grew up listening to Earth Wind & Fire since I was just 5 years old, but now I'm almost 50. The Kalimba was the sound I've always wanted to hear. I used to play the vibraphones a lot from my teens up until my 30. That was the first instrument was given to me by my dad back in the early 80s. It was stolen some years ago. I only played by ear. That was my favorite instrument before I'd learned to start playing a piano.
THis song touched my soul from word go..Maurice..
I Love your music, I fell in love with my husband listening to Your music.
One of the best.
OTHER-WORLDLY INCREDIBLE MUSIC!!!!
I'll be glad when I finally find a Kalimba of my own! Such a beautiful sound it makes. Thank you, EWF, for "opening up an new world to me".
Did you ever find that kalimba so you can make your own beautiful sounds with it?
@@willardlockejr2965 Not yet, but I will!
@@traceyk4531 You'll let me know when you do, OK?

Have a blessed Sunday. Bam! best! yet!.
Kilimba is a rich melodic instrument of African origins. Most black people are move by it's vibrations. Love this forever classic!!!
Salidified Earth wind and fire how so many masterful musicians could produce such beautiful lyrics and they sound the same live
One of there very best jam
Shout to all the kids living in NYC at the time, playing skelly in the streets, riding bikes, playing basketball in the parks, while listening to our parents blast this out the living room window, blasting this on the 8 track, or blasting this from the car listening to the cassette or 8 track, lol. To all the tail end of the baby boomers/beginning of the Gen X ers, If you were born , i would say from 62 to 66/67, Yall know what im talking about :)
Untouchable for at least a decade straight
wow i was just entering high school when this great song came out we played it all night at the party.oo wee i am 60 and i still 💘 all EWF great songs.
Wow! long time no hear!. Best! Yet!. Smile!.
'Another one bites the dust' at the intro for a few seconds long before, 'another one bites the dust' was released.
Another great Earth, Wind & Fire song.
KALIMBA!!!! Damn, EWF was just the BEST!!!
Great song of all times
Music Before IT'S TIME ❤️😇
One of my favorite EW&F songs
Love the Kalimba better known as the African piano!!!
a super, SUPER jam!!
Mr. Maurice White, R.I.P. and see you on the other side. Bam!. Best! Yet!. Smile!.
Gregory Countee He’s up there with George and John, Prince too!
What a band that would be!
i found this vinyl on a 'coffe old stuff store' made in Colombia, very cheap, poor care. I like ewf but never hear this album before. When i buy n' heard it saaay.. GOD! this is one of my fav tunes, so sweeeeet! Kalimba, oh Kalimba, I'm glad I found you.
One of my favorite " Maurice White RIP💖
People who don't know Maurice White before EWF should check out the song Brazilica by Ramsey Lewis. White used to play timbales and kalimba for Lewis and he produced the album Brazilica is on for Lewis. You can hear the roots of EWF for sure in that song and of course incredible percussion
Kalimba story always going to be wanting great
Music Before Its Time ❤️😇😎😎
E.W.and FIIRRE BABY!!!
Saw them at the Los Angeles Sports Arena
77....78?
Anyway. THEY WERE SUPERB!!!!!!
Marvin Bell: This tune is a crossover from African and American instrumental soul.
I love it cause this is an old and funky tune.
Yes, it's so beautiful!!!!!!
Saw them at the Spectrum 1979 in Philly what a cite
This is the first album that I ever purchased. I was 10 yo at the time. In addition, EWF was touring to promote this album 💿 and that was my first ever concert too. The price of the tickets were $4.50, $5.50 and $6.50! 😂 my mom gave her cousin $5.50 to purchase my ticket and I attended the concert with him and some other adult relatives.
I loved this album 💿! Then i soon purchased “Head to the Sky” and l”Last days in Time.” When these two albums were released, I really was too little, and didn’t remember them being played at all.
"Kalimba Story" and "Evil" are the reasons why I'm planning to play the kalimba in the first place. I've been a fan of EWF forever!! RIP Maurice!!
I love this song!!! So amazing!!! Great artists!!! Truly great!!!! GENIUS!!!!
i love this this song
Timeless!!!!
This a very underrated and not played a lot joint from EWF. Should be played more on the airways !
Nothing they did was underrated why do folks use the word underrated on UA-cam so darn much
@@anthonytaylor7928 Fitting for a song less played.
HERE THEY COME !!!!!!!
The best detention I ever had was in 1975 when I was in the 5th grade. It was on a Saturday. We sat in class for a couple hrs while the teacher was grading papers. While he did he played a group I had never heard of it was EWF. He explained what a Kalimba was and told us about this group. It was the best detention I ever had. Lol
Back in the day this was a jam!
I remember earth wind and fire perform this one at the shack with evil and mighty mighty in the summer of 1974 Franklin park.
The guitarist, bassist, drummer, tambourine, coupled with leader Maurice whites lyrics and kalimba playing results in timeless, killer tune.Instrumentation that required REAL talent to execute.
Kalimba.Ooooh Kalimba.Play me a tune.Classic
When I think of that EWF sound, this song comes to mind......
Maurice introduced the Kalimba to world, when he was the drummer for the Ramsey Lewis Trio🙏🏽
Saw it in a store one day

This song sounds like a hybrid of Aretha's Rock Steady and the Stones Missing You.
Calvin Robinson I can see that.
Especially missing you
