  • My friend Jack asked me to help him get really good at pickleball really fast. So I agreed to do a one hour lesson with him to see where he's at and what he needs to do to get invited to Katy Perry's next celebrity pickleball tournament. And along the way I think I found the fastest way to learn pickleball.

A good way to teach a short backswing is to tell people to never let the paddle get behind them or never leave their field of vision. I find that to be a really helpful way of teaching

The section at 27 minutes is what held me back more than anything else! This topic is not stressed or discussed nearly enough. Glad you focused on it!

Started playing pickleball 8 months ago and i think the last few minutes perfectly summarized my whole experience thus far as well as some of my friends who had extensive tennis background. While some of the stuff we were doing was working against the lower categories, none of it worked against 4.0+ As an example my partner who was a former collegiate tennis player and myself medalled silver at a 3.5 tournament by hitting hard, fast and resetting. But we were outclassed and destroyed when we tried a 4.0 tournament. It felt like a different game altogether. We quickly realized it we needed more than just hard drives, deep serves, resets and the occasional dinks. Were working on unlearning the bad habits now. We were going through a pickleball existential crisis haha, and you summarized everything at the end of the video perfectly. Thank you and keep the content coming!

Top-notch! I’m a 4.0 and have played for a couple years and I got a lot out of this video. I just found a drilling partner a couple months ago and have seen a massive improvement in my game. This video has reminded me of a couple fundamentals I’ve heard many times but haven’t heard since I started drilling, like making contact in front of me, so eager for my next drilling session.

That was an excellent video, and I’ve been playing quite a bit longer than Jack. Your last point was the most important. Many of us learn bad habits that are “effective” when we play lower level players but are counter-productive to our progress.
I’m working on many of these fundamentals (short back swing, letting the ball land on my paddle, anticipating where the ball will land, etc) in my drilling. I wish I had learned these things much earlier. 👍

One of the things that confused me when i was a beginner was watching these instructional videos that were recorded on a tennis court and being confused with the lines ( tennis vs PB). To a beginner it could appear you're standing inside the kitchen because the tennis line is so prominent. My suggestion is to explain the lines if you're on a tennis court but ultimately it would be less confusing to record on a dedicated pickleball court.

I wouldn’t start him off with the 002. That’s one of the poppiest paddles there are. For a beginner you want to start someone off with an all court or control paddle and have them get the basics down before moving to a power paddle.

Between "small" and "soft" that analogy needs a lot of work.
