For a brief period I was making more money than my father.

We still haven't learned that buying fuel from foreign countries that we don't like (or they don't like us) still puts us in at a huge disadvantage to power our cars and country. I would have liked to think we'd learn from the 70's but we dropped the ball, and we are re-learning that lesson and paying for it again!
Sadly that's just not how it works though, and this is not just an U.S thing every single country with a "power grid" including north korea the literal isolationist state relies on outside sources of oil/energy among many other things.
It's not that we haven't learned as citizens. It's that politicians have no obligation to serve the best interests of the country anymore. If the pipeline would have been finished we would be in better shape. Biden doesn't lay down the pipe Trump did. But it's all a joke anyways because once the country went off the gold standard the consent of the governed vs the governing went out the window.

I do find America’s love hate relationship with diesel very odd. For a country that is obsessed with burning fuel, high power/torque engines and doesn’t care about emissions relative to Europe it is weird that diesel didn’t take off. It’s probably because it costs less to make. It’s why the British flogged to diesel. Then the government realised they were losing out on tax money and taxed the shit out of it making it more expensive than petrol. And now we’re at a medium where it’s more expensive but you get similar mpg per unit cost for similar displacement engines

Great video as always. Good point about fuel being a national security risk. We are seeing something of that right now, pretty much all over the planet.
Underrated comment. People need to free themselves from being such slaves to the pump. Alternatives are plentiful. Some people cover their ears and put the blinders on, choosing to stay stuck and susceptible to the direct effects of oil dependency. Much like a drug, the dealer controls you and can raise the prices based on your dependency. And some people continue choose to keep killing themselves over this dependency. It’s not the dark ages. They have choices, but complain and blame others about the choices THEY made and continue to make.
I liked the vid. It gave those who weren't alive at the time, some context along with the facts. But you missed something huge. It was the fuel crisis that gave impetus for the speed limit being reduced to 55mph. We once were able to drive on many state and local highways at speeds only now can be driven on little more than major interstate systems.

I remember one of my teachers telling me about biodiesel and how easy it was to make. They would go to restaurants and pick up the used oil (that the restaurant would have to pay to throw away). They would strain it out with cheesecloth. Pouring it directly into their diesel cars, he also said something about if it was in colder climate they would have like a warmer box or something like that. Note: if anyone could add clarity to this story, tell me if my teacher was exaggerating, or any other additional information would be great.
He is right you can just get strained cooking oil and put it in a diesel car. While it is possible, you can’t just throw it in along with diesel, most people dedicated to the biofuel usually have a second tank specifically for the used cooking oil, and can switch from the diesel tank to the cooking oil tank on the fly
Not quite as straightforward as just filtering it and throwing it in a tub, as to get it to run reliably in most commercial engines, you need to add a bit of methanol. I'm sure if I looked for it, I recall having a book somewhere in my alt fuels research days about the exact percentage, but my brain tells me about 5% to every 50 gallons. Wood fuel is another one that's like the fryer oil equivalent for gas engines. Doesn't seem like it would work, but it's an alternative.
Slight exaggeration. You need to filter with more than just a cheesecloth. Otherwise, you'll be clogging up fuel filters every 2 months. I did this with a buddy of mine. We worked a fuel supply systems company, so we had access to good filtration devices, used an old water heater and dual filters to pre-filter the veggie oil we got from a donut factory and a restaurant. A gallon of vegetable oil is about $8 and is always higher than the price of diesel, so now most restaurants sell their used oil to companies that buy it and come pick it up for free. Yes, in colder climate, you need to add ethanol (Heet) to the used oil and also need a tank warmer because the oil coagulates thicker and faster than diesel. The older diesels worked better with this but still had a lot of problems with cloggin if not twice or thrice filtered.
@@garyslentzii2796 I remember him saying that a byproduct of using restaurant grease and oil was that your car's emissions would smell lightly like whatever was fried in the oil. I didn't include that part in the story because it sounded absurd to me 😂. But thank you for the additional details.

The sad thing is that GM actually had a few really good ideas in the early 80s, but they put them out to market too soon and cut way too many corners along the way. The X body, and later A body, were really great vehicles that were drug down in early years by weak/low econonomy engines, lazy transmissions, and slow styling updates. It really was a case of "Too little, Too late."
Apparently even the olds v8 diesel ended up a great engine when it finished development, about the time it was withdrawn. The engineers begged them not to release it so early.
I saw a guy filling up Tupperware with gasoline in the ground in 2020. He was switching back and forth between containers because they were splashing and spilling everywhere. Exactly how you would imagine someone filling up 8 different sized Tupperware containers at a busy gas station…
From my research into the GM diesel, it seems as though the head bolts on it were weak, but the biggest shortcoming of all was that they didn’t install a water separator on the fuel line. And it forever turned Americans off buying Diesel engines. For what amounts to a part under a hundred bucks. Perhaps a Donut deep dive on the failed American diesel? It’s an interesting story for car nerds.
The good thing about that Oldsmobile diesel engine is it has a very high nickel content in the blocks so they make great high compression race engines when you convert them back to gas
Don't even get me started... I'm an Audi guy and it passes me off how many diesel options they have in Europe. From 2000 and up there's like 3 or 4 audi models I can think of that have a diesel motor. VW has a few more options but they are no Audi as far as styling and luxury.
It also didn't help that it was naturally aspirated, which is a real problem when you're dealing with diesel engines. There's a lot of untapped potential there, but it would have blown the heads clean off with their undersized head bolts had they tried to use forced induction. It's a real shame, too, because diesel engines would be even easier to make fuel for using alternative sources and they're generally more fuel efficient for a given torque output, which is useful for when you live in a place with a lot of stop and go traffic. Horsepower isn't what gets you moving, that's torque. So little 3 and 4 cylinder diesel engines putting out 120HP but nearly 300lb-ft of torque are great for that kind of application where you don't necessarily need to go super fast all the time, but you need to get up to city driving speeds quickly enough not to cause an accident. Though, admittedly, a lot of American diesel engines lack the ability to rev quickly in the first place, so maybe it still would have flopped.
Diesels are extremely popular in Australia since the 80s and 90s, even with small passenger vehicles like the Rav 4 and Hyundais. Probably 90% or more of the larger 4wds and offroad vehicles are diesel. The problem is that due to the popularity of diesel cars there is also alot of demand for diesel fuel which drives up the prices, now it's not much cheaper to use a diesel compared to petrol than it used to be.
Funny enough I ended up buying like 50 gallons a month ago. I work from home so not much fuel gets used by me. That being said, I hope things get more normal relatively soon.
@Tyler If it's in a sealed container, general rule is that it will last 6 months at 20C (68f), or 3 months at 30C (86f). Will also depend on what it's stored in, and what it's being used for. Some engines can take some bad quality fuel and be fine, some will clog up and stop working pretty quickly...
@Tyler building on what Ed said, you can use fuel stabilizers like Sta-bil and they claim it will make your gas last up to 2 years, but I probably wouldn't go more than a year myself. Gasoline breaks down into a goo like substance which would murder a modern fuel injected car if you let it sit long enough so it's all about how long you're willing to take the risk.
@@roseroserose588 well the problem isnt so much bad quality as it is the gasoline literally turning into water, water and CO2 are the products of gasoline combustion because they are the products of gasoline oxidation, which is what makes gas "go bad".

But it costs to tap, and even if we do, that oil is subjected to the same oil pricing. The only thing one can do is try to pump enough to drive down the price. Supposedly the U.S./W.E have negotiated with Saudi Arabia and the rest of OPEC+ to go ahead and pump more oil to bring the price down. Oil did fall about 15% yesterday, so if we can get price to under $100USD/barrel, maybe prices can get down to something more manageable.

That's why in Europe we use diesels sedans and have smaller engines. In the USA most of the cars are like 3.7 V6's and most of them are gasoline powered engines, so... Yeah. You’re correct that US oil production is considerably higher nowadays, but also US energy consumption is also much higher than it ever has been historically. Curiously, that difference can be explained in the very higher consumption rates of just the top ten percent from airplane travel, but even the middle class is flying much more often than in the past. As a society, we’re collectively just much more energy intensive in everything we do.

I feel like we were already up to speed with how often this is mentioned, but it’s still nice to have an official episode on it.
I just walked by a gas station here in Finland. Diesel was about $9.70 per gallon. Gas was a tad cheaper at $9.35 per gallon. Pure madness.
So about 2,56$ per litre in Norway a few days ago it was 3$ or 27NOK per litre for diesel.
I'm so happy that Up To Speed is slowly going back to its old format. The past few episodes felt like an extension of D-List. Keep up the good work, James. I love you, too man, with or without homo.

Google "Fry grease to Fuel"

That sounds like GMs typical processes

Donut Media: Get up to speed on the gas crisis!
Me: so....the first one....or this one?
GM, with bad head bolts? Never heard of it *coughnorthstarcough* lol
The problem is that due to the popularity of diesel cars there is also alot of demand for diesel fuel which drives up the prices, now it's not much cheaper to use a diesel compared to petrol than it used to be.
my uncle was telling me about the Arab oil cut in 1973. I appreciate your quick yet detailed summary of multiple events
@@Kevin-dt9xm Ah I see what you mean, yes that is true. Just some engines are a lot less worried about what's being fed into them - I'm thinking the difference between a highly tuned race engine that requires e85, vs a single cylinder lawnmower that'd probably run on acetone and good vibes if you tried hard enough
@Tyler In my area with humidity and such, it'll be safe for about 2 years, and sketchy but usable for another 2 years. That's sealed without fuel stabilizer added.
Fun fact, something like this happened in Mexico at the end of 2016. Long story short, the government eliminated gasoline subsidies, and as a result, prices skyrocketed 50% in a single day.

Yeah.
