I’ve only just begun my tumultuous journey into fly fishing and I can not, as words fail me, explain to you how needed this particular video was. I too, am from Montana and had been looking to get into the art of fly fishing. Mad River Outfitters is a very necessary and relevant source that can be trusted. So glad I found you guys. Thanks.
It's only a matter of time before I use up a tippet ,then repurpose the spool especially if your only carrying a couple of leaders...tight lines everyone.
I do this as well but I like the maxima spools better cuz they’re a little bigger and easy to manipulate. I use my daughters hair ties to hold them in place
I figure it's only a matter of time before I bump into you on one of my streams, a bit north of the border and the Slide Inn, but on the east side of the big rocks. It's been a pretty slow season, but hopefully next year will be better.
I feel extremely blessed to be wanting to start this hobby in a world where you have made all these incredible videos for us. Just 4-5 years ago, I would be so much worse off looking for information.
Thanks for watching. Brian has many videos where he explains where loops are the better option. A time and a place for everything. Here is one for example: ua-cam.com/video/-g_pxKzwtG4/v-deo.html
But I suppose I should have multiple full leaders ready to go . For all possible types/situation. As progressive as i can be I can also be very old school on stuff...I mix it up...BUT I LISTEN....?
I decided to tie leaders from 5 rolls of mono starting with 30 lb, ending with 4 lb...I can cover most needs generically ....By tying ON THE FLY....wait...I mean ...On the fly...I tie in sections...HEY!....You do that too!...It's all your fault!...But actually after tossing many test examples I realized it works really good! I start with a loop on the butt/fly-line end.. Maybe follow with a nail-knot , but the rest are Surgeons Knots. Then tie something for tippet. I was stunned at how nice that all worked. I could adjust for wind, weight, etc. AND ITS CHEAP! And quite durable. Works better than the tapered single piece packaged leaders I tried. At least for my needs. I just pretty much avoid any hardware. I am no expert. But after many videos and tossing out into the street when not fishing, that is what I settled on doing. Thanks for your experienced input! I mean that! But by doing this, I can cover most of my fishing needs, including fly, spinner and bait caster , without spending lots of money on almost redundant supplies.
Ok Brian, you have just opened a new can of worms for me 🤣🤣🤣. I thought you use a fluorocarbon for nymphs and nylon for drys. And just a heavier one for streamers to turn over the bug. I guess I will have to send in a question now 🧐 thanks for being there and hope all of y’all are doing well 👍
Hey Brian, you said streamer leaders are different from dry fly leaders and dries are different from nymphs and such. What do you mean by that? Other than diameter, what makes them different?
key tip on this is to be able to label your bags so you know what size leader in what bag. permanent marker is pretty good, label makers are best.
Label your bags! Amen. Thanks for watching.
I can confirm. They nicely answered all my dumb questions :)
Any and all questions are always answered. Just have to send them via e-mail or give them a call. Thanks for being here.
The SA leader wallet is sleeker, but it has lower capacity than the Rio one, and more importantly, you can replace the ziplock bags if they get torn.
Thanks for watching.
What's the difference between a nymphing leader and dry fly leader ?

Appreciate you being here.
Freezer tape sticks well, is easy to write on and when you want to remove it, leaves very little residue on the bag.
Thanks for the tip and thanks for being here.
Great tips!
Thanks for watching.
Loop to loop? I thought the idea was to "cut the loop."

OK so now you have a leader in a ziplok bag in the wallet. How do you know which type (nymph, fly, contact) leader is in the bag and what size?
Check at 13:03 and he tells you how he does that.
