There was also a real historical figure named Amakusa Shiro who lead a Christian rebellion in Japan. You could label it as the final battle of Sengoku jidai but it happened way after Tokugawa conquered Japan, and before the 100 years of peace.
If you’re behind on translations then in case you’re not aware, Tengai Makyou Ziria: Far East of Eden finally got a fan translation released in the tail end of last year. I’m playing through it now. And if you’re not keen on forced random battles then brace yourself for this one…
You had me at the correct pronunciation of “Suikoden”. Thank you for covering more obscure retro RPGs like this, I have always been interested in checking this out since I was a kid, sounds like I dodged a bullet there after all.
I have never even heard of this game, and I was a HUGE Samurai Showdown fan back in the day. I even had the Game Gear game. This is super cool though. I love it when a franchise tries something new within their mainline. Persona has fighting games, musou games, tactical games, and rhythm games. It really expands the brand and brings in fans that would otherwise not be involved because of the genre. My biggest takeaway from your review is that this game desperately needed a sequel. Sequels take the first game, fix the problems, add the parts they weren't able to put in the first game, and make it far more player friendly. A sequel could have gone a long way to making this a more memorable title. If you think this is cool and want an example of another franchise breaking their mould and trying something cool, then look no further than Onimusha Tactics on the Gameboy Advance. It's probably right up your alley. It doesn't really tie into the other games, but is cool nonetheless. Now, if only the creators of Shining In The Darkness made a spinoff. Maybe they could make a tactical game! That could be something really special...
Onimusha Tactics has been on my radar for so long. Every now and then I see a screenshot and say "oh yeah I still have to do this one." Maybe sometime later this year...
@@RPGFort Oh, you're missing out on a classic! How many other tactics games have battles that begin when your guys get ambushed while peeing in the bushes together? How about Nobunaga Oda drinking sake from a human skull? Sheesh, and I thought Shiro of Amakusa got some poor historical depictions! It's also another game that desperately needed a sequel to iron out the problems, but it's still serviceable. Has a few nice touches too, like an indicator on each character to let you know that you've finished their actions for that turn. Otherwise, this has been a great year for content! Keep up the good work!
I wouldn't even be surprised if that was a big reason this was made, the realization that an increasingly popular genre was virtually absent on the console.
So a few people have already mentioned this but to give some more details: Amakusa from the Samurai Shodown is based on the historic figure Amakusa Shiro a Japanese Christian during the Tokugawa shogunate (a time during which Christians were persecuted in japan) who led an unsuccessful rebellion and was executed. so well i don't know the specifics of Samurai Shodown's version of the character the idea that christianity and a village of christians in hiding would factor into the part of the story in which Amakusa is the villian makes a decent amount of sense
@@RPGFort Its a fascinating period yeah Nanban black ship era. Portuguese Catholic priests engaged in a lot of philosophical discussions with Buddhist ones and Christianity was booming in Japan since it filled a gap in the peasantry honestly kinda smashed by the big elite classes, once they stomped it down, Christianity only resurfaces relatively today where its growing again fast in Japan. The Scorcese movie Silence is inspired on a japanese novel of the same name and shows this period well.
This was my very first RPG ever amd I first played it back then in 1997 on PS1. 20 years later I played it again and I said to myself "is this game always this beautiful?" This game truely stand the test of time!
I loved this game. I played it in both chapters with all the characters. It is a bit encounter-heavy like old SNES games, but the cut scenes were worth it. If an RPG series like Final Fantasy can have a fighting game, why can’t a fighting game series have an RPG?
Actually just about anything featuring Amakusa Shirō will feature secret Japanese Christians. He was a real dude. Also Portuguese Catholic missionaries introduced Tempura to Japan around that time.
I'm playing through the first story. for some reason once you get past the mountain, The game becomes much harder. I feel severely underpowered. I forgot to level up at the blacksmith, then I went and leveled all my weapons to the max, and I'm still underpowered. Best strategy is to run during any fight because the enemies are too powerful.
I mean, Shirou Amakusa was a historical renegade Christian whom.... Samurai Showdown converted into a Dark God-worshipping Sorcerer for this franchise. Actually including Christianity doesn't sound too off when bringing up Amakusa.
The people in that village was hidden was the Japanese government would've killed them. All outside religion & culture was forbidden for common people. This stuff happened in real life too.
First time watching anything from this channel and can easily say that with the amount of research shown to be done for this video I'm gonna skip this channel. Stopped watching when he shown confusion regarding the town of christians. Shows that they don't even understand the setting of the game they are critiquing when that information is easily found by doing a small amount of research about the series.
🤨 dude, you don't have to be mean. Heck, most Christians don't even know about it & it happened to their own religion. Some people are just not into history. It's fine bro, he didn't say anything that was bigotry or something. He just didn't know that's all. He didn't want to spoiled anything anyway. So no story plot points & what not 😂 I wished he would've. But this is a spoiler free video
I remembered playing the Japanese version but in the day when emulation was still new. The fps was sh°t and the music was cropped up. But hey 🤷🏾♀️ it was a free game I can't get in America. And I love the series 😅 it was a turn base rpg... so it didn't matter to me. I barely remember it. But I remember all the fights 😅 I also remembered enjoying it. I love RPGs & fighting games. It was a basic RPG.. that's all. Old RPGs 🤷🏾♀️ not everyone has the time for the old school bs. I'm just used of it. I turned up the speed to help with the battles. God bless emulation, playing the random battles in normal speed is a no no 😂
Well you know it's pretty funny is that secret Christianity. Is real and actually happened around that time period in Japan
Yeah it happened. I first learned about it in an anime before hearing about it in school 😅
A horrific time to live there tbh.
only if you were christian, which you should not be

The correct pronunciation? You mean Fantasy Water Margin?
From RPG to Fighting: Persona
From Fighting to RPG: Samurai Shodown
I know thier different but it depends in a way they translate the gameplay
Oh, right on! I had no idea this finally got translated! Huge SNK fan, so this is super exciting for me!

Yeah, he was a Christian Saint trying to stop anti religion laws. He was a rebel against the government over there

I forgot to say good job 👍🏾 every comment helpers right? So it's not spamming 😅
This was one of the games I'd have killed for as a kid after seeing it in gaming magazines for years prior and post release.
Do one on Eternal Eyes, such an underrated srpg!
Deeply flawed game, but the sprite work is at least quite pretty. Shame it doesn't really save it.

Any chance you could cover how Project X Zone was done? I know it won'y come to Switch, but I think it was a fun series
They're both on my list to review at some stage!
@@RPGFortI played the first one in the series. I loved it.. it would be awesome to see him talk about it
@@RPGFort😁👍🏾
It's not great, but it's not bad either
Yaay, games with only 1 poorly written guide 🍻
A poorly written guide, probably made by someone who needs a haircut.

Gawd I wish there was 3,000 different SamSho games 😅
6:00 is when you actually mention anything about the game. Way, WAY too long.
Would play.

Not weird at all... Christianity was a huge problem in Japan at the time.
Never heard of these games before so thanks for bringing them to my attention! I’m awful at fighting games but it’s still interesting 😊
You smugly joke about being addicted to a worse game than this, then smugly mock this game poorly
I enjoyed this game.
