- This is an old short film from 1949 called A Step Saving Kitchen. It was made by The USDA's Bureau of Human Nutrition and Home Economics. It shows some very interesting space saving and step saving ideas with regards to kitchen organization and design.

Current designers should check this out. So many of these things would be so very helpful, especially for the disabled or those with mobility issues.
If you want to experience a truly useless and non-functional environment, you should check out the "universal designs". I spent some time in a newly built barracks for injured and disabled soldiers who were getting treated and fixed up before being medically retired or med boarded.
the rooms didn't work for anyone. Each one had to be adapted after the gov. spent so much money for a "universal design" that didn't work for the specific disability that soldier living there had. Wheel chairs wouldn't fit in certain areas. soldiers who couldn't bend weren't able to use parts, shoulder injuries made half of it all useless...it was just worst than making do in a normal barracks.
i agree
I agree. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@whyme7996 I can see that. Sorry you had to experience all that. Thank you for your service. It really stinks that something meant to be helpful wasn’t even close and cost so much money. 😔
I like all the storage bins and how everything was organized in this kitchen.
I totally agree! Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I love watching these old films! It’s so interesting to see how things were then. The houses always look so cozy! ♥️♥️♥️
I totally agree the houses always look so cozy. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I love these old movies people were so articulate and attractive compared with today.
I totally agree. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I'd love a kitchen set up like this. In fact aside from the movie about it has anyone ever had a kitchen designed like this? Thank you for showing it.
I love the kitchen set up also. Especially how every space in the kitchen had a purpose. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
One of the old houses my family could afford to rent when I was around 8-years-old, just outside of Asheville, NC had a kitchen like this. It had a modern refrigerator AND an old ice box. Had a detached barrel dishwasher. It was a lovely old house.
Love this I wish things were like that still. The good old days for sure! Lol ❤️😊👍
The best! Thank you so much for watching. Have a good day❤️Grandma👩🏻
Well, I clearly live in an old fashioned house, because I have virtually none of those newfangled improvements, lol. I like the cookbook rack built into the cabinet. Like the towel drying rack, but not tucked into a narrow space with no air circulation (an invitation to molding). I don't like the open flour/sugar/tea bins, an invitation to little buggies, and the materials would get stale (or sticky) quickly to boot. Definitely notice the absence of plastics in this kitchen of tomorrow. Shows you how dependent we've become on plastics over the past few decades.
Very, very interesting one from the vaults, Grandma and Grandpa!
I just adore watching these old time films- I feel like I would of loved the 1950's. Unfortunatley kitchens these days don't need all the storage like they use to because people eat out more often. My favorite part is the meal planning center. So fun to watch! Thanks for posting.
Hi glad to hear you love the old time films. You probably would have loved the 1950’s. Life was so simple and everyone always made homemade meals. Not many restaurants like today but they did have many phone booths around to make calls. Take Care❤️Grandma👩🏻
It's my dream kitchen.
Mine too! Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I love this!!!!
Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I very much enjoy this design. I wish I my area functionality was like this. 👍
Glad you like it! Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I loved this! Thank you for posting it!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
I love the films that you post from years ago! Love you Grandma and Grandpa and of course, the kitty's 😺❤,you can never have enough counter space!,I really love this kitchen, I could utilize everything in there
Glad you like them! I agree you never can have enough counter space or storage. Love you Grandma👩🏻Grandpa👨🍳& Kitty’s🐈🐈⬛
This is a wonderful piece of history reminding me of being a little girl 🤟🏼
I am glad you like this film. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Thanks so much for sharing this with us, nice to see this was filmed in color. In 2023, these kinds of films are pure "camp," nothing wrong with that! Following World War II, there was a major housing boom in North America for the returning veterans so perhaps this "Step Saving Kitchen" incorporates into that? You don't even hear or see the term "home economics" anymore, or "home ec" as we referred to it in high school, where many boys took the classes, thinking it would be an easy credit!
Hi Greg on Long Island we have the housing development that was built following Word War II . Most of them look different now due to remolding. I know you never hear of home economics. You mentioned the boys taking home ec. I know many girls that took shop and they really enjoyed the class. Thank you for watching and have a nice day❤️Grandma👩🏻
home ec was full of girls.
and that was nice!
@@GrandmaFeral I was one of those shop girls and loved it! (I was the only girl in the entire high school who took shop.)
How great is this film! Perfect ideas, once again novel, for a well designed kitchen. I'm working on designing a small house for my homestead, and will try to utilize some of these wonderful ideas!
Sounds great! How exciting designing a small house for your homestead❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral Thank you. Now if I can get it built under my very small budget, I'll be golden!! And I'll be learning some new skills for finishing on the inside as well. Thanks for sharing these vintage videos and recipes. Love you and Grandpa!
Oh to have a kitchen like that! ❤️
The best! Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Enjoyed the video very much and I want such a kitchen so badly now!
Modern kitchens are crap compared to this.
I marvel at how well thought out and utilized the space with every nook and cranny is while it still feels spacious and tidy.
They even acknowledged that most women like to work from right to left. I honestly never realized, but I prefer to do that myself. Which is actually hindered by my oh-so-modern kitchen design. Granted, we're living in a rental flat and have to deal with the kitchen that came with it, but still... a 1949 kitchen design beats the modern all day long.
I am glad you liked the video and the way the kitchen was designed. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Love it. Keep these wonderful videos coming!♥️
Thank you! Will do! ❤️Grandma👩🏻
This shows how simple but efficient a kitchen can be..
Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Love these type of clips
Hi Glad you like them❤️Grandma👩🏻
loved it
Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral i love you too
Thank you for this! I LOVE THIS! Can you please share any other old videos like this that revolve around home economics?
I will try! Glad you enjoyed❤️Grandma👩🏻
This must have been a rare kitchen cause I've never seen one like it in any of the old houses I've lived in.
I don’t think many kitchens were designed that way.❤️Grandma👩🏻
It's honestly interesting but I can't shake the feeling that Tom and Jerry will race through at any minute
Thanks for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Hi Grandma!!!!!! 🌼
This is a cool video. I love these oldies. Awesome! Thank you.
I sure need one of those.....wife not kitchens! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 I couldnt resist that! However, I'll be greedy and say I could use both to be on point! 😜
It's a VERY well planned out kitchen. Very cool with areas for everything and very accessible! (Speaking of the wide too! 🤫🤭🤫🤭🤫🤭😂😂😂) I'm so nawty! 😈 I bet I'm still your favorite tho, Grandma! 😁😁😁😁
Grandpa better get those plans for that kitchen. 😉😉😉 Crack the whip Grandma! 😇🤗
Catch ya on the next vid!!
Hi Grant I am glad to hear you love these old videos. I really like all the storage bins in this kitchen. Grandpa did a lot of the work himself on our kitchen. I am very lucky because Grandpa can fix anything on my honey do list. Thank you for always watching and take care❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@GrandmaFeral Awesome! I thot that Grandpa would be good at being Mr Fixit! 😎 And he cooks too!! You chose well, Grandma!! ❤👍🏻👍🏻🌷
Oh history📻☺️
Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Nowadays kitchens are made to look pretty and not functional what a shame this video is amazing hold all that work was put in to make something that really works
That was my same thought, which goes for a lot of things, Take refrigerators, they make them with screens on them now..app's to order things, but the actual purpose of it will fail in 5 years, My friend still has a working 1973 fridge in his house.
I totally agree! I especially love the storage bins. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
@@TimothySmiths Yes, and just try to find a moderate-sized fridge with a vegetable drawer that can actually accommodate vegetables! I have yet to find one that celery will fit in, or whole beets with beet greens attached, or hold both a head of cabbage and a head of lettuce at the same time. Seriously!!😡
@@patriciamorgan6545 agreed, it seems they make them less and less about actually doing the job they are made for.We have newer washer and dryer and it is the same thing, all these functions..cleaning features and etc..but all you need is basic functions..not a host of useless garbage.
@@TimothySmiths 100%!
Even "modern" kitchens are not as functional as this. I LOVE the flour canisters and the potato and onion bin compartments.
I totally agree! Thank you for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
If the kitchen had a gas range and not electric, it would be perfect. Thanks! Now all I need is someone to build it for me.😂
Hi Marty Rose I have only had electric stoves to cook on so this kitchen is perfect for me. I am thankful Grandpa is a great fixer upper.
Have a blessed day❤️Grandma👩🏻
I have always loved this design. Could you tell me where you downloaded the original? I really wanted it for my history facebook page.
Hi, it was on the National Archives website.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much for watching and for your support. ❤️Grandma👩🏻
I wonder if anyone actually lived like that. My mom's parents had 5 kids in 1949 and lived in a converted chicken coop with no indoor plumbing or refrigeration near Pullman, WA. My dad was on the reservation in a log cabin also with no indoor amenities and he also had no electricity and some days, no food.
I believe that the people who could afford that kitchen actually had a similar one. My Grandmother had a kitchen in the cellar with very little cabinets and her ringer washing machine was near the sink. Thank you so much for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻
Hey there! We lived in a converted chicken house, too, also in WA! We were luckier, though; Dad was a contractor and house mover, and someone paid him for a job by giving him the unwanted building, big enough for 2BR, bath, and kitchen. He went on to build an addition with 3BR for us kids, another bath, and a family room, opening our old BR into a living room with a fireplace. The kitchen was a U plan, with a big table, sort of the center of the house.
A time when stay at home women were still considered workers ❤
So true it is not easy being a domestic engineer. Lol❤️Grandma👩🏻
They didn't rinse off the dishes after washing?
I noticed that also but I guess they didn’t want to show her rinsing off the dishes. Have a good day❤️Grandma👩🏻
I think this was filmed in a studio and not in a functioning kitchen. They probably filled the sink with sudsy water for show, but didn't have running water to properly film the whole dish-washing process. Seems the director didn't mind 😆
Yeah, that really bugged me, too. Kept expecting to see a sink hose produced out of nowhere to hose off everything at once in the rack.
At 11:31, the narrator says, “After they are scalded and dried, glasses, silverware and dishes are stored in adjoining cupboards.” I think that means when then all the washing is completed, everything gets dunked in very hot water. That would serve to remove any remaining soap residue. (Or maybe heat up water in a kettle and pour it over dishes in the rack in the deep sink??).
@@ginafitzgerald1985 I don't know so that's why I asked. Your answer sounds plausible.
