As an Aggie, I’m so happy to see you share our amazing band with the world. The most amazing part is that they learned this in one week because they do a completely different drill (formations/sequence) every single weekend for each different
    game

Howdy Courtney and welcome to the Aggie experience. As a 3rd generation Aggie and father of the 4th, watching the Fighting Texas Aggie Band at half-time of our football game is an honor and privilege as these dedicated men and women practice extensively to be this good, every time they step onto the field. This dedication represents all that Texas A&M stands for. Honor, Courage, Integrity, Loyalty, Respect, and most of all, Leadership. All schools have good degree programs, but A&M has a Spirit that you take with you the rest of your life that can support you if you choose to be the very best you can be. But like any gift, if you don't value it, it won't help you. Be well and stay safe and it was fun to watch your expression during this event. God Bless you always, Larry Collis '83

@@CourtneyCoulston You realize that each member of the Texas A&M band is a member of the Corps of Cadets and during WWII no university or place of higher learning had a higher loss rate among its officer graduates than Texas A&M. A&M was still a military school at the start of WWII. You may notice that some of the cadets are wearing knee high riding boots with spurs. This is to indicate they are Seniors. They will all be commissioned upon graduation. As a UTexas grad, I can send you a list of 1001 Ag-gee jokes, like why did the Ag-gee wait all day at the intersection? @rabbitovsteele6167 4 роки тому +19

As an "old-timer" in marching units, I have to say that the Aggies are an exceptionally fine marching unit. Today, no one else seems to do this style of marching. In the 1950's and earlier this was the normal style of movement for marching bands, drum and bugle corps, drill teams and etc. If you watch the old Clint Eastwood movie from the late 60's "Kelly's Heroes" there is a brief shot of a similar military band in the background part way through the movie.
The style of marching goes back to ancient Rome, and is based on their style of shaping and moving on the battlefield, formation of squares, shifting of formations and moving back and forth from defensive to offensive formations. Watch the Aggies shift formation and see how much they change their shape, open files and close them and expose different fronts in 4 counts, 8 counts, 16 counts. Amazing. Everyone who confronted the Roman armies had to learn how to do that or be defeated by it.
The use of these kinds of formations continued up until Waterloo. In the American revolution the early signs appeared that formation of squares and such was on the way out, but it took Waterloo to prove it, and the Franco Prussian war to put it to rest. Even in the beginning of WWI the strategy of motion dominated thinking.
Never the less, training in motion has been an effective tool of discipline, and the logic of shaping the battlefield continues until today, though today the battlefield is recognized to include more dimensions and multiple symmetries. But, the logic of shaping the battlefield begins right where the Aggies have chosen to dominate in their style of marching. I've never seen anyone do it better.

You should ask if anyone remembers when Texas A&M played Rice and the game where after the A&M band left the field to let the RICE MOB on (Marching Owl Band). Rice thought they could act like jerks around the Aggies and their traditions by having violin player, electric guitarist, and concert pianist as part of the MOB, but the MOB crossed the line and started making fun of the Aggies commitment to duty, honor and country and the Aggies broke ranks and chased the Relice Band back into the tunnel the Rice Band came out from, and the Aggies chased them in, except the Rice students did not think that A&M cadets almost to a person graduates and is commission into the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines. So, the Aggies knew how to block the back entrance to the tunnel, there were no escapes, no prisoners and a lot of blood. Last time the Aggies took anything off a lot of long hair students who acted like unpatriotic fools, and the last time any other university tried to twist and Aggie's nose and get by with it.

It is incredibly impressive and seeing and feeling it in person is something I wish everyone could experience. Note that these are all college students in the Corps of Cadets at the university. A very large number of them will receive commissions in the armed forces upon graduation.

The statistic is 40-45% and when the Corps is as large as it is, that’s well over double, even triple other traditional schools (excluding the military academies and other SMC’s). No biggy but I don’t see the point in disputing this gentleman’s notable comment.

Howdy Courtney! If you notice when the announcer announces the band the whole crowd repeats exactly what he says, which is “Forming at the North End of Kyle Field, The Nationally Famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band” and then we yell “Whoop”...it’s like our official cheer. Then, when the drum major is doing his commands, we yell “Whoop” after every command. Next, when the front line of trumpets show off their banner hanging from it, we “oooo” and “awww”. When the band starts playing, they start with the Aggie War Hymn and everyone sings along and towards the middle of the song the crowd links arms and legs and “saws varisty’s horns off” (which used to be our biggest school rival, University of Texas). If you get a chance, look up the “Texas A&M Student Section: Aggie War Hymn, Lamar Game. 9-6-14” by Ricardo Sosa. That video is a good video that demonstrates what we do during the war hymn. Whenever the guys with the Tubas have to do their turns, the crowd grunts because these guys have to almost kneel all the way down to the turn with out hitting anyone. That goes for the big drums too. And the other individuals with other instruments have to bow their head while still playing to make their turns. It’s pretty cool. Then, when the band forms a T, it’s called a Block T, it used to be the symbol for the school. They go back to playing the Aggie War Hymn when they form the Block T. Then when the band is done they have to run off the field and it’s time to start the 2nd half of the football game. These are some of the traditions with the Aggie band at the football games. One of the stories/traditions I’ve learned about the band is that when my dad was at A&M in the late 70s, no one besides band members were allowed to step on the band’s drill field, if you stepped on the field, you were run down and beaten up. There are so many traditions that are awesome to learn about and make you fall in love with Texas A&M, like Midnight Yell, Yell Leaders, Aggie Football, Reveille, the yells we say, and so much more. You should look up Texas A&M Traditions and do a video about it.... All the Best. Thanks and Gig’Em👍

    Some interesting notes:
The Texas Aggie Marching Band is part of the ROTC at Texas A&M.
The student body doesnt leave before the drill because of their support for the band. The blank seats about the 20 yard line is where the band sits.
The drills are changed every week during football season. The drills get increasingly more complex as the season goes on.
Generally the last drill or the bowl drill has menstrual drills where we put 2 or 4 people in the same spot at the same time. We call them that because people can get bloody as you go through.

One son is an A&M graduate, another about to enter. The marching style is called "6 to 5", meaning that every 5 yards (white lines) takes 6 steps. It also implies that the show will move mostly from end zone to end zone. There's another marching style which is "8 to 5", and is used by professional marching corps. Google Drum Corps International. It's a very different experience.

Courtney, I’m not being college football band centric here, and I graduated from LSU: you chose wisely on featuring the Texas Aggie band. They are one of the best (the Ohio State guy who responded is a homer and OSU’s band is NOT as good). That being said, maybe review some vids of “pregame” entrances for different schools........ they often times capture the regional/local history of the school. Case in point: search Utube for a big game for Florida State University. Their mascot is the Seminole Tribe, who was indigenous to what is now Florida..... their pre game entrance is beyond awesome and captures the fierce warrior spirit of the Seminoles, which the Florida State University tries to honor. That is just one example.

I agree - there are different types of marching as well. I'm not an expert but I'm told that the Penn State Nittany Lions Blue Band performance of the "Floating Lions" is a complicated move and respected in the band world. I'm also told that the Blue Band is one of only a handful of schools that do high step marching. Although I could be biased since I'm an alum. I do appreciate the precision/pattern marching of the Aggies (pronounced like baggies without the 'b'). Penn State and Michigan performed together once and did Game of Thrones as the theme. I think the action marching (where the shapes they form have movement like planes/tanks/ships which they do on Veterans Day games). Depending on what you like, you'll find a marching band that you gravitate towards.

Partly because they rarely do anything physical, and also because they got out of PT for the sake of practicing for these fantastic halftime performances. We were always making fun of the band until halftime; we'd take a 20 minute break from that when they were on the field. The other block in the stands wearing khaki by that entrance to the field was most of the rest of the Corps of Cadets, who are only slightly more socially capable than the band members.

Some few schools and universities are known for having an exceptional marching band. Texas A&M is one of them.

We also get the same feelings when watching the Fighting Aggies Marching Band. GIG ‘EM! They begin and end with the FIGHTING AGGIES FIGHT SONG.

That big T is called "the Block T", and it stands for Texas A&M University and the Fightin' Texas Aggies. You should come to A&M for a football game and see all this in person.

I got to give it to the band members. The hours the days that they commit to perfecting their art. And also the outfits that they wear in the incredibly hot southern climate. Much respect.

They call them uniforms. Corps members overall are in uniform virtually every day.

I am a very serious Alabama Crimson Tide fan and I always felt we had a great band until I saw the A&M band. They are fantastic! Our band doesn't even compare to anything like that. I am definitely a major fan of the A&M band and watch their videos whenever I can. Go Aggies!

One of the best parts about being American!!! The pride in ones school and sports as well as pride in our country!!! We may be from different places around the US and we may love our different teams but one thing is for certain. The game of football is like life here 😃 we love the game, we love the atmosphere, we love the culture, the smell of the fresh cut grass and tailgating in the parking lots. The military inclusion, food and all!!! This is part of what it means to be American! 😊 my friends that moved here from NZ and grew up here came to fall in love with the game of football because of what it all stands for. Where government politics is pushed to the side and worries from work are nonexistent. And from personal experience, the feeling of running out of the tunnel in front of 70,000 people screaming which the marching band plays your school song is something that you can’t explain unless you’ve experienced. 😎 it makes your blood run cold and you get the chills. Adrenaline running at its peak and there’s nothing like it. Thanks for sharing with us!! Your Tongan friend in the States!!

Hi Courtney, the stadium is called Kyle Field, the last time i checked it is the 3rd largest in the US and 7th in the world.
While A&M was designated as "Agriculture & Mechanical" it has grown to a major Veterinary, Nuclear/Petroleum/Chemical/Industrial Engineering school. It also holds the top 5 spot in private funding from either Public or Private schools in the US. Roku, The DVR and Fracking have roots at A&M........
    Stay safe from the pandemic

Courtney - Texas Agriculture & Mining (A & M). Very good band. Hundreds of hours practice. These kids play at a VERY high level. Both my sons were in high school band & it's damn hard work!

Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas was it's original name, was shortly afterward renamed to Texas Agricultural & Mechanical University (System, although "System" was dropped shortly after THAT).

You should see it in person Courtney, the tailgating, the ball game, and the marching band at half time. Texas A& M is superb, yes, but this goes on across the USA, every Autum Saturday, in various forms and fashions, particularly in the Southeastern Conference games, Texas A&M, Auburn, Louisiana State U, Alabama, and Georgia, to name a few. All have stadiums that seat 70,000+. It's a time honored tradition here.
