As a marching band member... we use things called drill books to learn the show. Each song is made up of many drill sheets and each drill sheet has a spot for everyone. Mark your points and plot how you move. Band camp usually takes about a week (10 hours a day) to put together a show.
Bro you’re living the life. Our band camp is one week of 8 hour days with another week of band camp of 12 hour days (8-8pm)

My senior year of high school only the section leaders got the drill charts everyone else got position sheets. You sheet had your exact coirdinates for every set and the section leaders where able to check for mistakes.
Brian Hennessy my band did this. We got a sheet that was only our “dots” (positions) and the section leaders got the full drill book to check their section against and correct as needed
I too was in marching band and it was a lot of hours in the heat in the summer time during band camp and lord help you if you made a mistake. You were either running around the football field with full gear on or doing push-ups. So much practice goes into each half time show and I think its a real shame that they don't show them doing their half time routine anymore. They use to a long time ago. They deserve their time in the lime light as well.
There's a reason why the Ohio State Marching Band is called "The best damn band in the land."

The pushups part depends entirely on the band. Because upper arm strength only actually helps with Low Brass and colorguard, but some old-fashioned directors insist on it anyway to “build character.” My high-school band was pretty good and basically never used pushups above the section level-if the trumpets wanted to do push-ups they could, but full band time was for drilling the movements and music and most sections were too busy with more of that and things that actually helped them play better, like breathing and fingering exercises.

I'm from Cbus and it's so fun to see other people experience The Ohio State Marching Band for the first time. They put such time and effort into not just their shows but also into the local community
I'm also from Columbus its pretty cool when their is a game also f michigan
We call them TBDBITL - The Best Damn Band In The Land. They practice 30 hours/week plus carrying their full academic class load. Since they don't have time for jobs, all the marching band members get full scholarships that are funded by public donations, not the university.

Bands have people who develop the routines, formations, etc. Players memorize their moves; they really don't have the ability to look for the yard markers because they're playing while marching. So they'll get something like 15 steps forward, 10 steps right then 20 steps diagonally. Remember that the guides are different for each player so all the sequences mesh.

Ohio State is one of the few bands in the country that only marches with brass instruments, no woodwinds. Basically its a drum and bugle corps.

They have been a very consistent one of the top 10 marching bands in the world for decades.
It may not be the most complicated, but "Script Ohio" really is their signature.
If you watch a clip from halftime of a game, the Ohio State crowd always goes crazy for it, the stadium they use has the 5th largest capacity in the world.
Bands like this can make halftime FLY by. Enjoyed your reaction. Halftime shows like these are a great part of the football game experience.
Now you start to see why football is so popular here. Starting hours before the game, all the fans party in the parking lot, called a "tailgate party" after the tailgates of pickup trucks and station wagons used as kitchen tables for cooking lunch, with grills and such standing nearby. Then there are ceremonies in the stadium before the game starts. Then at halftime there's a show such as you just watched. Then there's aftergame parties. It's not just a game, it's a whole day experience.
What makes this band awesome is that no one's spot is guaranteed. You audition EVERY year. And if someone in the band wants your spot, they can challenge you for it.

You should check out a tradition that the University of Iowa has. The Children's Hospital is near their football field and during any home game everybody in the stands plus the Iowa players and the opposing team will wave to the kids watching the game and when it's a night game the crowd will use their phones to wave to the kids.
Yes, another one of the best traditions in college football. VERY emotional. Even the visiting team gets into it.

We start in 9th grade, so by college, we are very used to the hours of practice and skills needed for this. Every high school in the south has a band like this, that does half-time shows every year.
They may all have bands like this one, but which ones in particular perform shows like this?

But we won almost every competition we were in.

High school and college marching bands perform their competition marches at halftime as practice and entertainment.
A rival high school around here used to have two marches: one regulation competition march, and one "asshole" march twice normal length to keep the other band off the field. The visiting band performs first, and they pulled the asshole march on us at our homecoming game...

@@CourtneyCoulston each show is designed at the beginning of the year by the band directors. It used to be done on paper but over the last 15 years technology has allowed it to be created on iPads. My son marched 1999-2004 and they got sheets that showed the movement (kind of like a rolodex). They had to learn the movement AND the music. They don't have the music (like other bands do) attached to their instrument. If you ever make it to Columbus, Ohio for game day at Ohio State, they do skull session starting 2 hours before game time. It's held indoor at the old basketball arena across from the stadium and they play their pre-game and half-time show (no marching) and welcome guest bands (high school or the other team's band if they're in town).
Practice, Practice is what makes them so great. The yard lines on the field help alot. Hardest part is everyone has to March at the same pace. I love those bands that perform at this level.
I live in Ohio and our high school marching band copied Ohio State, and we learned a new show each week. Most other marching bands learned one show for the entire year, but we learned all of that in just a few days. The one guy in the Red and White, he is called the Drum Major, and if you could see, he had a really heavy baton in his hands. Weighted on one end,m and a heavy ball on the other end. Our drum major went to Ohio State to learn to do what that guy was doing, and our guy was unreal. Baton twirling tricks. Throwing it way up, he spins around a few times then catches it band his back, or under a leg. Just unreal and since its weighted, you have to have super strong wrists to work it. But yeah, we learned a show like that starting on Monday, and the game was on Friday, and we had it down pat by Thursday. 4 days to memorize 3 new songs and all of those formation changes for each song. OSU's band is know as the best damn band in the land, and when we had a show at their stadium, they would be there and all knew of us, and would call us the best damn band in the land, since they knew we were the High School version of them.

They use software to design the formations. On the field you have to use the lines, hash marks, the count, and the people in the formation with you to know where you're supposed to be. In practice they will tell everyone how many steps to get from one formation to the next. Sometimes you go straight to it, other times you have to move as a line with others. Practice is a lot of standing around at first while everyone is learning to get set in a formation. Then it ramps up quickly when all the pieces come together.
'Kyoto Tachibana High School Marching Band' is also an amazing marching band that's played everywhere. 'Blue devils' as well.
The work kids in college marching bands and in DCI drum corps do is just amazing.

I did marching band in high school! We had band camp in the summer where we would start learning our music, and we'd also try to recruit incoming freshman coming to their freshman camp, so they'd get a chance to learn the music too. We practice for months! So we're ready as soon as the foot ball season begins. Once we've gotten the music and we practice marching in sync and following marching commands, someone choreographs the whole show on paper, and we learn it from there its easy when you have the lines on the ground. Everything is an 8 count, usually its a matter of making sure you're at the right line on time. I miss it honestly! Its such an experience to be in the show! And also bands usually battle each other in the stands, its fun seeing what the other bands bring to the table, and see who the audience vibes with more!
You should definitely check out Drum Corps International or DCI for short! It's Marching band on steroids!

I was in marching band in college (not at ohio state but at another school in ohio) they use charts with dots and placemarkers on the field as reference points. We made it a point to not use lines on our practice field so we can memorize where to go without lines and using the people around you as your reference point with in the line.
That said I went to Europe (performed at a soccer match and Euro Disney), Canada, and various other places over the years. We were corp style this is more military style. They were also brass only (there are no woodwinds only brass instruments)
They know where to go because they are giving “dot sheets” they tell them every move they need to make and every place they need to go

Man, I love Ohio State's marching band. I've seen a couple of their half-time shows live, and they were a blast every time. If you decide to watch more of their stuff, I recommend watching their Script Ohio. It's incredible, really.
And now, a recommendation for other good marching band videos- If you love complex and exciting performances by marching bands, I recommend you check out Drum Corps International (DCI) videos. DCI is basically competitive drum corps (marching bands) that tour around the country and compete in stadiums and the such. They are different from university/college marching bands because they compete and they don't belong to a school, as they are their own independent groups. Unfortunately, this year, due to the circumstances we are in the 2020 DCI season was cancelled. So, I think I'll recommend the DCI group that won during Grand National Championships last year- the Blue Devils. Their show was very artistic and theatrical, no dull moments with something always happening on the field. The shows title was called "Ghostlight". You can find a good video of their victory run after they won on the Blue Devils UA-cam channel, where the camera switches between members wearing GoPros and a camera up in the audience. It's very high quality and very awesome.
The guy is the drum major. And all of these kids were in marching bands in high school. Mine, the Fort Recovery High School marching band, placed in a lot of international competitions including the Great Southern Battle of the Bands (1985) in Orlando and The International Marching Band Festival in Toronto (1981).
We came in second both times. But the 1981 competition, we came in second by the song Hang Em High, the Clint Eastwood movie theme.

It's kind of like frame-by-frame animation. Each band member's music is marked and mapped out individually, so they know how many steps to take in which direction at each musical beat. It's incredibly painstaking to do, and requires a lot of practice.

Rehearsal. Lots and lots of rehearsal. Mostly, you're positioning yourself relative to others.
They do use the lines and hash marks on the field. They start by learning count offs for each move. Then they put music together with counting steps. Hours and hours of practice and you get the show. Oh and there are marching band competitions. Huge ones at high school and college level.

Glad you appreciate marching band. That was an awesome show. Both of my boys March, if it wasn’t answered in the 1000 comments ahead of me they practice all the time is how they get it right. It’s all about timing because their March is also town with their music and they do not look at the ground. Their eyes are on the drum major to keep time with music so everything they do marching wise is from memory and practice. And you nailed it on the head all that while playing an instrument. So all the air a normal athlete would use to play their sport is being used simply to make sound with the instrument but yet they still move constantly. It is incredible. If you ever get to the states you’ve got to go see a marching band in person!! You are so fun to watch.

Kids in the US state in band kind of early, they start marching in the 9th grade. Band students spend all their free time practicing before school, after school and after dinner during marching band season which goes from Aug. to mid Dec.
This was nice. As someone who marched and played trombone, I realize the kind of work that goes into these shows. As someone who has seen about 100 halftime shows (from Rice University, to the University of Texas, Alabama, Ohio State, and countless high school shows), it's always fun to see the different bands' personalities. When push comes to shove, I stand by the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band.
I don't know which video would be best, but a couple of other bands worth watching are Grambling State and Southern University. If you want to see craziness, those guys will leave you dizzy.

"That guy" is the drum major, who is basically the on-field conductor. I am not an Ohio State fan, but their band is really entertaining. They have a pre-game show which is one of the coolest traditions in college football called "Script Ohio". You need to react to that. If you thought the drum major was impressive in this video, you should see him in THAT routine. And yes, the big colleges do have scholarships for band members.
There is this thing called summer band, typically where school bands practice different routines for their marching performances.
Can't go wrong with any of their halftime shows really. They do a different one every week for each game, generally with some kind of theme, so there are plenty to watch on youtube.
The steps they take are written in the music, by the musician as given to them, by the band director and his assistants, as instructions. In every measure in the music (4 beats to a measure), someone is turning in some direction. This is plotted out by the band director and his assistants. Students take their music, and head outside to the football field, to "walk" through it, and of course, using the field lines, (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 yard lines) on the field. Regular marching steps are 8 to 5, meaning eight steps within 5 yards. That is the speed a marching band takes (there are other speeds). Once the routine is learned, they then practice to perfection. Usually on a Monday to be ready by Friday night. The single person with the huge hat, and red coat is the Drum Major, and leads the band. Most high schools have a dozen or less tuba's, depending of size of high school. However, colleges/univ usually have 24. High school, and college marching bands are patterned after military marching bands. I am from the Great state of Texas, where football/half-time show is a religion here. However, the best college marching bands in the country are Ohio State Buckeyes, and Michigan state Wolverines. You should see them in battle, it's a site to behold. We've had marching bands here since schools have been in existence. Hope this helps.

There are several halftime shows of TBDBITL "Ohio State Halftime Shows" There's Hollywood Blockbusters, Queen, One Giant Leap, etc... and of course "Script Ohio".
I personally enjoyed the Hollywood movie theme more but this one is good.

I remember marching band. I was part of the drumline and there weren't a lot of girls playing percussion back then. I played in high school and we were not as good as the university, but we got up extra early and prepared for months and worked our teenage hearts out. People sleep on marching bands. But music nerds are the bomb. Recognize and respect.

so the way my marching band worked, everyone was given drill sheets that had all the placements on them using numbers (like each person was assigned a number) and instructions on each page (like whether you hit the spot and keep moving or if you need to pause there etc and how many counts it takes to move into the next spot). for a while we used markers on the field so that we could easily move back and forth during practice. it took 2 weeks to memorize a whole halftime show and then we just practiced a lot for competitions.
Ohio State marching band is the absolute best in all of college football.
If you want to know a bit more about college bands, there is a series that is called "take the field" by college marching that goes to the individual schools and shows behind the scenes for practices and traditions and rivalries for each school :)
I gotta admit, their band is incredible. But you really need to react to the University of Michigan marching band. I’m a wolverine, and I hate OSU “with a burning passion,” although their band is one of the best in the nation. Go Blue!

i used to be in marching band in high school and i miss it so damn much. it was fun but also extremely tough and kinda stressful at times. but i’ve never been in such good shape as when i was in marching band. it’s been like 6 years since my last show and i’ve regressed back to how tf do they do that??? even though i literally did it for 3 years straight lmao

The marching band is affectionately known as TBDBITL; "The Best Damn Band In The Land." The spectacle of this band being experienced live will literally make the hairs on your arm stand straight up. Imagine being in this stadium, filled with over 100,000 screaming and cheering fans. However, the ultimate thrill is to see their signature act when they perform what is known as "Script Ohio," where the band actually writes out "Ohio" in script. It IS breathtaking. They've done lots of tributes, the ones for video games and Hollywood blockbusters are pretty cool too. I was in marching band in high school, but we were nowhere near this coordinated. We were a lot better at sitting in the bleachers playing when there was a long pause in the game 😄

They know where to go because they get dot books and I saw someone already explained that. They have many rehearsals and 20-30 hours a week. The one guy in all white is the drum major. He carries the baton and usually helps with keeping time for the band.
Yea, us "muricans" do things things differently. Makes life interesting.
The guy 'killing the game' is a drum major and he is spinning a baton, throwing it in the air and catching it, all while he's doing flips and cartwheels!
As much as I dislike Ohio (I'm from there), I love the OSU Band.
I personally did 2 field shows in High School on a MUCH smaller scale, and it takes forever and a lot of blood sweat and tears (literally).

This band leads the opening in home games. They save performances like this for halftime, but their opening is pretty impressive, especially when the drum major bends over backward to touch his tassel to the ground! O-H...!!
There's a reason THE Ohio State Marching Band is called TBDBITL (The Besat Damned band In The Land). The band has it's own football field to practice on. You should see their "Script Ohio."
Thank you for taking the suggestion. Marching bands are big part of the American football scene for college, high school and even junior high schools. There are many really cool bands. The college kids are just students. They may or may not have scholarships. If you like to see more, I invite you to check out my school, The University of Wisconsin-Madison. /what you may not realize is that halftime usually includes TWO performanced of marching bands. The band from the visiting team goes first and then the home team band takes the field. So at the beginning of this video you saw the visiting band exiting the field and then Ohio State took the field and did this amazing performance. The description box for the video says that this performance was only ON WEEK after the one you just watched!

The "Hollywood Blockbuster Show" was performed by members of the Ohio State University Marching Band on October 26th, 2013 at the Penn State Game. Coming off of their Michael Jackson Tribute show, students had a week to learn the drill associated with this show and a little over a week to learn the music.

This was a college marching band, a different side of marching band would be Drum Corps. Basically instead of doing it for school and performing at football games and maybe some parades, drum corps is a different thing so you would audition in the winter, have a few weekends during the spring and then the summer is non stop all day rehearsing and performing for 9 weeks or so.
