Though it dates back to many centuries (mainly from Maharani Linthoingambi) but it took its nascent birth in early 20th century under the guidance of Irabot. Meitei community being a warrior community with small population and due to their strategic geographical location meiteis had to face constant wars. So the mothers or womenfolk had taken the role as a savior and preserver of their society. Existence of khwairamband ima keithel is one such proof. But their role as meira came in the forefront after 1912 Nupi Lan. After the brutal defeat of India in the 1962 Indo-China war, the people of the mainland India had started viewing mongoloid facial people with suspicion. Due to this, after implementing AFSPA 1958 in Manipur various central security forces, mainly Assam Rifles, present in the state had started viewing the local mongoloid community as a form of enemy and started seeking revenge for their defeat in the 1962 war. These so call Central Security forces have started gheraoing the male population under gunpoint, whoever defied their order were killed brutally under the cover of AFSPA. And all the women were mass raped by the security forces or Assam Rifles.After that only the meitei insurgency came into being. So in the case of Manipur it was not that AFSPA1958 came into being due to insurgency but it is vice-versa. Here in Manipur, insurgency came into being due to AFSPA1958 and its misuse by the Assam Rifles. The meitei womenfolk never forgets those atrocities committed by the Assam Rifles against the Manipuri women due to which meira paibis still hates Assam Rifles. History never forgets. So even in the history also, when Maharaja Bheigyachandra left Manipur after his defeat in the hands of Ava(Burmese) it was the women who bore the brunt.Even during seven years devastation (1819-1826), it was the women who bear the brunt. So with time and experience our Manipuri/ meitei womenfolk have evolved and started becoming torchbearers for the safety and security of their children and their society as a whole.

Their origin lies in During Turbulent Security scenarios Of AFSPA human rights violations. Where thousands of Youths lost their lives in the hands of security personnel. When army or police would pick up male youths during nights just with suspicion of connection to Insurgents groups and would be murdered cold blooded.

On 15 July 2004, 12 Manipur women disrobed in front of the Assam Rifles HQ in Imphal to protest against the killing of Manorama Thangjam who was allegedly raped.
