By watching your videos I have learned that patience PAYS!! Just got a HH Scott 299C amplifier running from what I leared from your video series. Thank you sir!
It never fails to amaze me that a set has been stowed away for all that time still works. Very enjoyable video as usual. Thanks for sharing and let's hope 2022 is a better year for us all.
well for being in a attic for years I am really surprised roof rats or mice hadn't gotten into it and chewed all the wiring and pooped in it. Also the humidity is normally murder on cabinets but that looks like it fared pretty well. Amazing that you never replaced any electrolytic caps and it works from 1939 wow I'm 71 and its 11 years older than me. I think that's a very nice gesture offering the radio back to the guy you got it from since it was his Dad's. Thanks for sharing.
Hi I rebuilt a Stromberg Carlson 515 that looks very much like this one except it had the discontinued FM band. the veneer is exceptional on it, once it is refinished it will be a beautiful radio. Radio Daze has decals that worked on mine. Good luck Rich
Beautiful work getting that set going again. It's not only a very nice set, it's a precious family heirloom, too. < 3 Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year to you and yours too. : - )
Probably worked when it was put away, as you thought because the dial string broke. With a 5Y3 10-16mfd input filter is usually fine, the one after the field coil can be anything, I usually suggest 22-47 depending on desired level of hum reduction. The input filter being higher than 16mfd can theoretically cause cathode stripping, though I really don't think a 22mfd cap would be a problem (I've got a sparton that uses a 5Y3 and had a 20mfd from factory). I usually use 500v rated input filters on a 5Y3 or 5Y4 as the initial surge voltage can be 460-480v. The older caps were far more forgiving than the new aluminum electrolytics. I see this also uses a direct coupled 6P5/6AC5 output stage. Zenith and Emerson made use of this, as did Wells Gardner (who may have made this set). It eliminated a couple passive components while increasing the tube count, both desirable for the manufacturer. Some say it has higher distortion, others say it's a nice mellow sound. I personally like it.
Thanks for sharing. I have a 62-306 "Teledial" desktop model. The dial looks like the old style telephone dial. I remember that this radio was very easy to work on. It was an uncluttered chassis and had plenty of room underneath.
I have three old radios, one of which looks a lot like this one, including that the veneer is off the top. None of mine were restorable as radios, so I scuttled them and replaced the speakers with guitar speakers. They make great cabinets - the large cabinet enhances the sound. I use a five watt Epiphone Valve Jr. amp, and it sounds very good. The down side is, that it is big and awkward to move. So, if you come across a radio that can't be fixed, it can be repurposed to good end.
I Remember When I Used To BuyTransister Radios At Garage Sales We Didnt Have Much Money For Buying Parts So I'd Take Parts Out Of Old Non Working TV's & Stereos. & That's How I Got My Parts
I Know Uncle Dugg Works On Old Radios Too. I'm Looking For An Old Tabletop Radio To Make Into A Bluetooth Speaker. Then Play Classic Country To Make Sound Like A Nistalgic Radio. Cause Trying To Find Those Parts Are Difficult. I've Heard Of People Doing Stuff Like That. I Think I'd Rather Do Something Like That Then Hunt For All Those Hard To Find Parts. I Seen One Guy Who Took An Old Floor Modle Radio Like The One You Restored & made A Bluetooth Stereo Out Of It. He Even Installed A Softwhite Led In The Dial To Make It Look Nistalgic & Original.
Gorgeous radio. The available content of today's AM/FM stations nothing to write home about. What are your thoughts on adding Bluetooth to vintage radios?
Nice work why not just put a piece of shrink tube on the dial needle and no need for soldering and it comes in many colors. Happy new year and God bless.
I was given, free to a good home that someone posted in my neighborhood a 1915 Victor-Victrola that is in mint condition and still works! Just needs a needle Hey my Stereo Amplifier has tube's KT88 and 12u7a's
When the set gets hooked up to an external antenna and ground system it'll pick up the stations much stronger and the eye-tube will show more closing action.
Hi. I am very old electronics enthusiastic but I really don't know what "airline" indicator bulb means. I am looking for what kinda of this green light means at all. Could you explain me? Cheers from Brazil.
Came here to figure out how to restring my radio. And you perfectly showed that. Thank you!

Thanks! Happy you got it going. Glad I could be of some help.

Nice! Another cool old radio brought back to life.
What a cool old tube radio Receiver
My ears perked up when you mentioned a 40 model Zenith. Restored and own two of them myself.
Beautiful work getting that set going again. It's not only a very nice set, it's a precious family heirloom, too. < 3

Very elegant looking radio and nice to see the valve tester in use. Happy new year regards Chris

Great to see another one saved. Thank you Sir. Been watching and liking. Just haven't commented or for got I did, Getting old : ) All my best.
Hey man, love the content, keep up the good work.

Yes It's definitely uncluttered. Thanks for watching!

Another forgotten piece now lives to play again.........Sigh......... Nice repair!
Great job as usual! I looked around a bit and I think (but not sure) that the radio was built by Belmont for Wards.
Thanks for the video that Ward's seems like a really nice performer. Can't wait to see the Zenith. Happy New Year to you too.
I wish you and yours all the best for 2022
Another excellent video. Happy New Year.
Gorgeous radio. The available content of today's AM/FM stations nothing to write home about. What are your thoughts on adding Bluetooth to vintage radios?
You can use 60 lb fishing line in place of the dial cord It will outlast dial cord and is much stronger
That was A Good Idea using
House Wire To To Make
A Dial Needle. I Think Radio TV Phono
Nut Done Something Like That.
Nice work why not just put a piece of shrink tube on the dial needle and no need for soldering and it comes in many colors. Happy new year and God bless.
What a cool dial! Epic!
I was given, free to a good home that someone posted in my neighborhood a 1915 Victor-Victrola that is in mint condition and still works!
Just needs a needle
Hey my Stereo Amplifier has tube's KT88
and 12u7a's
Nice work getting her up and running. Question ,shouldn't the eye tube have more of a closing action when a station
comes up? It barely moves.
Looked normal to me.
When the set gets hooked up to an external antenna and ground system it'll pick up the stations much stronger and the eye-tube will show more closing action.
Good job!

Great job! I hope you get your money back on that eye tube. It's sad to see dishonest sellers.
I just bought one for $30 at a yard sale.. Trying to restore it
Happy New Year.
