The Most Inbred Family of The Middle Ages...

  • It all began in Switzerland, with an area of lush agricultural land, and became a dynasty that dominated Southeast Europe for centuries. The Habsburg's rise to power in the High Middle Ages and its descent into extinction is one of the most fascinating stories in European history. They survived bloody religious wars, alcoholism, and madness but it’s possible that the family's obsession with ‘blood purity’ is what finally brought about their downfall.
    Welcome to Medieval Madness.

What's really scary is that portrait painters tried to be as flattering as possible. That means the real people looked even worse.

I genuinely feel sorry for Charles II. He is probably the most mocked king in history, but he could not have impacted how he was born or who were his parents. If the mockery is this bad now, imagine how it must have been to him while he was living.

Unfortunately, schadenfreude, or feeling pleasure for other peoples' misfortune, is such a common human emotion that most global languages have a word for it. (We English-speaking folk even imported the German word.) You are so kind, to go beyond that and empathize with the unfortunate Charles II and others in the Hapsburg family.

Medieval royal culture seems downright distopian. Maybe it's just because I'm viewing it through a modern lense, but the lifestyle and practices of the very wealthy and powerful of that era just seem so yucky to me. It gives me the same feeling as watching My Strange Addiction or other reality shows with questionable ethics. It's just gross and upsetting. Hard to believe that was just the thing for a thousand years or so.

That would be the Lorraine Hapsburgs, a cadet branch who ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire and had the good sense to stop marrying their blood relatives. It's the Spanish Hapsburgs who did all the inbreeding and died out as a result.
