Very nicely done:). I like the subtitles, so I could know the Spiritual meaning behind Bach's piece. I also like the room with the chandelier, the windows, and the fireplace that transports my imagination to another time period. A very lovely video:)

At 2:34. This is when German terribly falters as a singing language. Sorry to say. (And I'm learning German only because Bach wrote in this language!) I tried to sing along to this charming cantata and "Es sei uns dein gnadiges antlitz erfreulich" is such a tangle of crazy consonants even the singers here had to swallow some consonants to keep going. Ah, to have had Bach write most of his cantatas in the clean, robust phonemes of Latin or Italian. A boy can dream. LOL.

    Polish text:
    Kroczkami małymi spieszymy wytrwale
O Jezu, o mistrzu, o pomoc Ci nieść.
    Ty szukasz cirpliwie schorzałych, zbłądzonych,
    Ach usłysz nasz głos wołania
    Co wnosim o pomoc błagając.
Oblicze Twe święte niech będzie nam miłe.
    German:
Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten,
O Jesu, o Meister, zu helfen zu dir.
Du suchest die Kranken und Irrenden treulich.
    Ach höre, wie wir
Die Stimmen erheben, um Hülfe zu bitten!
Es sei uns dein gnädiges Antlitz erfreulich!

Tempo ???????

"Patience, children. You're making music not passing a kidney stone." LOL! Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. This conductor had them go so fast! The middle section was slurred because they couldn't even get the proper German words out without rushing through at breakneck speed. Also, the acoustics in this room are ATROCIOUS. Who thought it was a good idea to use THIS room for their concert?

I would love for the whole piece to feel a little looser. It's all very driven and joyless. Let the damn thing BREATHE a little. The singers are really excellent but you're not giving them any room musically.

The musicians "are running away".They get quicker and quicker and end up to gasping for breath. What a pitty, could be an excellent interpretation otherwise. Less is more.

  • @nevastrom1834
    @nevastrom1834 7 років тому +22

must be the conductor hates the vocalists. It started out too fast, then got even faster. The alto is cracking up because it is so fast they can hardly get the words out, much less breathe properly and create the wonderful phrasing Bach wrote into the music. The cellist is having a grand time, but it is evident that even the harpsichordist is playing a tempo that is extreme for his instrument. What a shame.
The individual musicians have lovely tones. Had this been performed at a canter instead of a gallop it would have been more enjoyable for all.
Next time, have the conductor detox from caffeine for a few days prior to lead. It will be much improved.

Who is responsible for this runaway horse of a tempo? The conductor, ultimately. Don't blame Bach for setting the word "eilen." Figure out your tempo ahead of time, son, and stick with it. Can't wait until the B section is over? Patience, children. You're making music not passing a kidney stone. I guess you got the "schwachen" part down since you're "eilen" so much.

@@SaltySeaWitch3 Well, I have a PhD in music history, so there! ;-P Compare the BPM at 0:10 to 2:30 to 4:00. This is one big accelerando. "Eilen ... emsigen," yes, but not to the point at which the last syllables of phrases are cut off and gasped through. Very "schwache" on the part of the conductor.
