In Texas. We do nod say ok yes Mmm Hmm whilst someone talking. Some ppl it depends maybe on their personality prefer you dont bc its looked at as disrespectful.
Like you arent really talking they arent truly listening bc they want u to hurry up finish speaking so they can have a turn to talk or bc they dont care or agree with what you are saying. That is why some ppl look at silence as a sign of respect. May be culture or nationality or age are a factor as well. It varies. If they dont understand maybe diff language or accents they be quiet to pick up key words then ask for clarification after. Isnt this all just proper communication etiquette?

Go somewhere in the USA besides the West Coast or New York and you will find everyone is friendly and warm. The middle and southern states are very different than those I mentioned. We get a bad rap but we are NOT the racists we are constantly labeled as. It's used as a division for political reasons but it's not true. There is a small percentage of racism as there might be in other countries. So please don't allow the rest of us in the USA to be considered not friendly. ♥️🙂♥️
