The wood will swell. And they could have waxed in between AND Linseed oil instead of turpentine.

That was my question also. I made a wooden bathtub but for the life of me can’t figure out what to use to stop the leakage

@@GigglingButterflyEuropeans have made watertight barrels for 2000+ years without anything between the staves. You probably need something between the staves and the bottom of the tub. Linseed meal should work.
