Thanks Richard, yes I'm just getting things sorted in the birdroom and new video will be out by 1st week in Feb. I will go over how I get birds into condition.
This year I'm using a product from unifeed, it's called vita, it has everything the birds need in it, it's amazing, 1 cup of vita to 1 cup of water, give it 30 mins then add abit if egg food. Its about like cous cous consistency. This is the link to it www.easyyem-ecs.co.uk/epages/es771057.mobile/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es771057/Products/"LOR Italia Unifeed Vita 5kg - BREEDING" The egg food I'm using is this essexbirdcentre.com/product/raggio-di-sole-th-white-extra
To be honest, it is so much easier, especially if you have all of the cages like them. Hopefully next year il have the whole set up like it, but were see how it goes
Hey Ben, nice crop of chicks you have there. I've gotten 23 chicks myself so far all in the last few days. Like yourself I've got one hen who was sitting tight on 6 eggs she was 9 days in and this morning when I went to check she was off the nest and the eggs where stone cold. I've got a feeling that the cock chased her off the nest as the last 2/3 days he's been at her and I'd say she's gotten fed up and abandoned the nest. Has me a little peeved as I was thinking of moving the eggs to other nests that where due to hatch the same day as hers and I could have saved them if I'd just done it yesterday but I gave the benefit of the doubt and sadly lost the clutch. Gotta ask though how did you sex the chicks when they are still in the nest?
Hi sorry to hear the bad news, If I have any doubts I will always remove the cock, that's what I've done this year and the hens are doing really good jobs. Regarding sexing birds in the nests, it's all to do with sex linked, as I'm using a res eyed cock to normal hens, all the chicks in the nest will be red eyed and all the cocks will be carriers for red eyes
Hi Jack, no it doesn't, Pairing a normal cock bird to a red eyed hen will give you carrier red eyed cock's and normal hen (hen's can't carrying there only visual)
@@BenMartinbreeding_season Thanks Ben, I didn't realize it was down to the "red eye's" in birds that allowed for sexing in the nest. I've never had any red eyed birds myself and neither had my Dad who was a border canary breeder for about 50 years give or take before he passed so I don't have experience with them. At the moment I have borders and Irish fancies but I'm thinking for next year of expanding an getting a few pairs similar to yours.
@@anshudublin no days people are trying to get red eyes into everything lol, yes I've worked in acquiring the birds I have and I'm really happy with them, buy cheap buy twice is what I say lol, also it costs the same to feed a crap bird as a top bird.
@@BenMartinbreeding_season Same here Ben and I always buy from a breeder when I have too as there is no way on earth that I would by from a petshop or the likes.
The yellow mosaics were rung at 7 days old but was very tight, I've just rung a smaller nest at 5 days old just really depends on how the hens are feeding, but I would say for 4-7 days old
Hi Ben my female canary has just finished building nest , getting on great with male , but is perched high up for two days puffed up and sleeping, she is still feeding and drinking, is this normal?
If you catch her up does her best Bone protrude out, if so o would say she I'll mate and probably wont last to much longer. If not them it could be her getting ready to lay eggs
I'm glad it not, they call it going light, it's a bacterial infection so no matter how much they eat it drink it's never enough and the die, not a pretty thing to see, let's hope you have eggs soon
@@BenMartinbreeding_season I'm afraid you were right Ben, found her dead this morning, gutted as my first try at breeding canaries, your advice has been much appreciated though.
So I have 3 types of cages the biggest ones are 4ft long by 40cm deep, and 45cm high And I thing the smaller ones are 60 cm long 30cm deep and 49 cm high, last year I think for breeding the cages were abit to much for them. This year I've had really high nests in the smaller cages. But these are just breeding cages and once they finish breeding there will be in flights
Awesome job! Birds and chicks are looking great.
Thanks, hopefully have the remaining nests hatching next week, and then some of the chicks jumping the nest soon
dank u vriendelijk
thanks

What ages do you ring your chicks

I was ringing Raza at 5 days, the Razas I had were some of the best feeders I've ever had
