Yeah, the "trailer" themes are best reserved for your animation breakdowns. That's where they shine the brightest because they cover a lot of ground to set out the general feel of the expansion. And if you do that, I heavily recommend you go through the expansions in order from 2.0's "End of an Era." The trailer that started it all for this decade long adventure.
I STILL get chills at the end of the Shadowbringers trailer when the music kicks in "WE FALL!"
I actually never saw the trailers for the expansions until AFTER I beat the base MSQ, so hearing that guitar riff kick in for the first time was FUCKING incredible.
@@cobbil It really do be like that, fellow Sinner
@@Kozmokast Yeah, I purposefully try not to watch the trailers until I beat said expansion because there's spoilers usually.
wdym "trailer" wdym "end of era"
“I’m not sure what genre I’m expecting….”
Yes
with FFXIV expect everything AND the kitchen sink
Thank you for reacting to this song !
For a little context, this song was wrote for a trailer, so it's more that they articulated parts of three songs important for the expansion in one song.
As for recommendations I think the songs from the other trailers from FF14 could be a good start :
- "End of an Era " if you want the song with visuals, but if you only want the track then "Answers"
- "Heavensward"
- "Stormblood"
- "Endwalker - Footfalls"
- And those tracks too "Dragonsong", "Revolution", "Tomorrow and Tomorrow", "Flow", "Close in the Distance" and so much more. All this is just an infinitesimal number of musics from FF14 you could be recommended to react to.
The wildest thing is that this absolute banger of a theme is sung by none other than Jason Charles Miller, the guy who previously sang RULES OF NATURE
And raubahns original english voice actor.
Also, the songs Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker and Dawntrail are the themes from the expansion trailers so they may sound disjointed because they follow the scenes.
Dawntrail isn't complete yet though, the music track is a stripped down version of what will be in the final trailer which we'll get in January.
Answers. Definitely do the song Answers.
Funny you mention Berserk when talking about the cover art. That's a Dark Knight, a job in FFXIV that was inspired in its design by Berserk.
Technically this is three songs combined into one for the trailer,
The intro is "Tomorrow and Tomorrow"
The bulk of it is "Who Brings Shadow"
The instrumental bit is "Eternal Winds" (theme from Final Fantasy III, and there's a few versions of it in FFXIV)
This happens with the trailer themes that they blend together several songs or leitmotifs in the trailers. The one for Endwalker blends all the main themes from the previous expansions into one piece.
Choose:
RIDING HOME
or
WE FALL
The trailer themes may feel kind of jumbled as they are mixed with various notable songs from the expansion. It fits better watching with the trailer itself. like this one is a couple different songs combined into one.
Griffith?!? GRIFFITH!!!?!?! WTF. GUTZ!!!!!!!! DRK IS GUTZ!!!!!!!!!
tbf, that helmet does look a little Evil Griffith-ish. With the smooth curve on the front.
Jason Charles Miller sings this.
this song is nice, but far and away from 14's best music
I've noticed that each "title track" for FFXIV tends to establish the leitmotifs for that expansion, and the rest of the music will branch off and relate back to it in different ways. It's very, very cool.
One thing to note about FFXIV music is that it loves to mix genres, so as the meme goes the genre is often "Yes" Also would love more FFXIV reactions, can never have enough! Tracks like "Fiend" or "Locus" are good ones to start with, though you should have gameplay in the background along with it because sometimes there are copyright issues if its just the music.
There's one song in there whose genre could be described as "Techno-Rock Sea Shanty"
There are songs where you listen to the instruments being used, and get confused, leaving you wondering why and how the Sitar is working so well with that Brass Section.
There are Waltzes. There are Alt Rock songs. There are EDM mixes. _And that's just Shiva!_
is this the start of a FF14 rabbit hole adventure? I’m all here for it
shadowbringers was a excellent start!
and your hypothesis about the reluctant battle is pretty accurate, fate can be a cruel mistress and this day we dealt with an admirable foe and an even more admirable friend
It was a Patreon request but i think i forgot to say so. If more happen, that'll be up to the people 👀
@@CatharsisYT patreon or not, ff14 is a endless source of fantastic music and themes, from two of the most if not THE most incredible composers in all of gaming! the range of masayoshi sokens work in terms of different styles is astonishing!
SO close to "Fate can be cruel, but a smile fits a hero."
@@larskoenig6021Soken is unironically one of THE greatest composers of our time.
Your whole 1900s spiel is really not needed. Most everyone that I know that plays FF14 is at least in their 30s, if not into their 40s and 50s. You moved on from Final Fantasy, just say that. The whole age thing is old and dumb and needs to go away. It's okay if you moved on from video games, it doesn't mean you're from some ancient sect who have all stopped caring. Plenty of us still do!
Man the animation makes the song hit so much different imo.
Btw ff14 is an amazing mmo probably top 3 mmos out there. Music is amazing and soken is a beast did shadowbringers music (the expansions music, all of it.) while fighting cancer.
As a note Shadowbringers is a title theme.
You should check out 'footfall' i think its called. Same game, very next expansion.
I always liked something a streamer said (I think it was Preach but I could be wrong). Final fantasy 14 is an RPGMMO not and MMORPG.
Seriously if you like JRPGs there is a 300-400 hour story that is superb. It can be ran almost entirely solo at this point.
@@VixenIcaza That’s Jesse cox who said that I believe, and I agree fully.
You were pretty on point with your observations. lol
This song is the overall theme of the 'Shadowbringers' expansion. It has that 'reluctant' beginning, with the player being thrust into a situation they didn't even know existed. Reluctant middle, wherein they learn about all these factors that could affect a decision they need to make. A reluctant acceptance/ending wherein there's no clear-cut line between good/evil (even right/wrong), where the story comes to a head as the decision is made, before moving onto the finale (the next expansion, Endwalker).
If we're opening the floodgates to XIV then I'd love to see a reaction to "Answers".
The Shadowbringers Trailer would also make for a good Animation Analysis I feel, or "Flames of Truth", which is where the song Answers comes from.
Technically "Flames of Truth" is from the Binding Coils of Bahamut, it starts out with Answers though. Answers was first used in 1.0 finale CGI cutscene "End of an Era" and then used again for the 2.0's "A New Beginning"
Oh you just opened the flood gates for the 14 fans ( including me lol with 9k+ hours in the game )
👁️👄👁️
You kind of hit the nail on the head there. It is a boss fight, you don't really want to win, but you have to and when it's over, you still feel bad for doing it.
Soken is a brilliant musician and your reaction is a testament to that.
Not quite. While a variation of the song is used for a boss fight, this version is the trailer theme.
It's ok as long as we remember them.
"Getting more country rock in vocal" does track, that is what Jason Charles Miller is known for on his own time 😂
The rock/metal portion of this theme is used for the first part of the final battle for the main expansion (5.0) and is called "Who Brings Shadow". The moment it kicks in during the prefight cutscene always give me the chills ^.^
"If you had the strength to take another step, could you do it? Could you save our worlds?" ua-cam.com/video/lfXnXTRlfTM/v-deo.htmlsi=f-CSfO4h77mcsZnM&t=879
So FF14 has somewhere north of 400+ tracks currently, and they in a wide range from, as you said, orchestral to metal. This includes some re-dos of songs from previous games, as well.
The comments should have mentioned Insanity and Insatiable too. Shadowbtingers is the original while they are remixes made for Boss fights.
"it can be something orchestral, can be something metal" actually is BOTH
While I do believe FFXIV music stands on its own merits out of context, FFXIV is a game that is definitely about 'the journey so far' as I like to call it, and all of the events throughout its history become integral parts of its story. Sokken as the main composer does a great job of incorporating this into the music as well, very often referencing other bits of past music in thematically significant ways and if you end up listening to more of it, it would be interesting if you started picking up on certain themes and motifs. I quite recommend it, Sokken has quite a unique and varied approach.
There's a lot of it though, FFXIV held a Guinness World Record for video game with the most original songs back when the remake launched and it's only gotten bigger in the 10 years since then.
Yea best to listen to this with the Trailer
Would love to see more FF14 analyses, first time on your channel!
This game has endless grear songs, from originals to reimaginations from every other final fantasy that came before, this one has a song form 3 integrated in it. I would recommend as samples From the Heavens, Dedicated to Moonlight, Wayward Daughter and A Long Fall.
do you know la hee
Funny you mention Berserk.
Each expansion has a poster child "Job" (basically, weapon and fighting/magic style). The poster child of Shadowbringers is the Dark Knight, who is a Determinator archetype that uses huge two-handed swords, and is willing to do _anything_ to defend those they care about. Dark Knights are the kind of characters who, if you run them through, will grab your sword and pull themselves closer to get at you.
Your comparison is not off base, and your further analysis is very solid.
Man... if you really dont know the story you got the right path on your deductions, its used trought all the expantion, boss fights, scenarios and the oppening animation. cant really write what happens because of spoilers, but consider reacting to "Answers" and or "Locus" or "Metal - Brute Justice Mode"
Funny you bring up Griffith as Dark Knight, the class which is shown in the shadowbringers title card, is in fact designed around the whole Berserk Aesthetic with the massive chunk of sword they wield and everything.
If you want to go down this particular deep rabbit hole, i suggest you give "The long fall" from FFXIV a listen.
Insatiable, the dungeon boss theme in Shadowbringers, is another banger of a song. And Mortal Instants (a nice chill song) and To The Edge (its cooler older brother). Sands of Amber vs Shadows Withal to get an idea of the range of genres that the Shadowbringers OST covered. But the real fun of a lot of FF14 songs is the leitmotifs sprinkled thru them, referencing other songs, almost always with a basis in storytelling.
Oh, right, and "A Long Fall" is the rave song everyone ques into its dungeon to hear. You just get told to turn up the music and enjoy. lol Its partially b/c its a remix of three previous songs from earlier loved stories/expacs, but mostly cus its just a great time. Shadowbringers just had an amazing soundtrack.
This song is 3-piece.
The beginning is part of another song - Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Middle - is "Who Brings Shadow" and the String part is "Eternal Wind" (an overworld theme from Final Fantasy 3)
Tomorrow and Tomorrow plays in credits and its version plays in the main city of the story - Crystarium
Who Brings Shadow - is a theme of the final boss of the expansion (more precisely - his first theme that plays in the first phase - second phase has another awesome song - Invincible - which transforms fight into real epic)
Eternal Wind plays two-fold. First - Shadowbringers takes a lot of themes from Final Fantasy 3's story (along with very first 24-man raid in FFXIV - the Crystal Tower ) and second - when camera flies around at first it shows place that was initially shown in the original trailers - city known at the time as "Rapture" (name of the tech demo shown in 2005, later supposed to be used as one of main cities in the game before cities were fully redesigned, but initial design remained in the first trailer) - it flies out of the area showing purple trees and entrance to The Crystal Tower (while we know that Crystal Tower doesn't have ANY city adjacent to it - it's located in very inhospitable area and was protected by magical wards, not mentioning that there is not a single purple tree in Eorzea), under alien light-filled skies, it shows different world.
Shadowbringers Cinematic Trailer is legit one of the most exciting trailers for both newcomers (what the hell is going on there? Can anyone explain it to me? who's this guy? Who's Master Matoya? Who's this guy? Who's this girl? Who is this crystal guy?) and veterans who are getting there (what the hell is going on there? Can anyone explain it to me? Urianger? WHAT, MATOYA? But that's... WTF!? Thancred? WHAT, MINFILIA?! Who is this crystal guy?), but it is confusing in a good, intiguing way.
This one, along with another called "Endwalker" are the themes to the expansions with the same name. These made out of three or four songs that are in the game, hence why they build up then drop.
"I'm having a hard time telling if this plays during a fight or if this a character theme."
Yes. :)
Prepare for ffxiv ost simp onslaughts. Just like arknights, we love our game's music like there's no tommorow..
A thing to note is that Soken, the guy behind the bulk of the FF14 soundtrack including this theme likes to use the vocals as an additional instrument rather than something that stands on its own over the music, which is why they have interesting effects that allow it to blend.
The Shadowbringers trailer (and even the original Realm Reborn trailer) would be pretty good animators react content.
You're actually not toocfar off with your analysis about the song and its ties to the story.
Cause much like you said, the warrior of light (the player) is basically whisked away from their world and are asked to save a world not of their own and after learning of that world's plight, steps up to the challenge.
Tried to keep everything spoiler free for ya should you ever pock up the game.
This song is actually a Mashup, funny enough. The first part is 'tomorrow and tomorrow,' and the violin tangent is a rendition of FFIII's main theme, 'eternal wind.'
If you're given the suggestion to listen to 'full fathom five,' 'the long fall,' or 'to the edge,' I'd take it. They're excellent songs from the same expansion.
An interesting analysis knowing what the story of this expansion is. It fits really well more than you may know.
I love your vids for the path to nowhere reaction (and others like AK and bandmaid) and was like "hmm I wonder if he'll react to ffxiv music one day cause they also have such a banger for music selections" AND LO AND BEHOLD XD
Masayoshi Soken is the music composer and his works are amazing. The music is so good and always tuned to the story theme. The devs also have their band even called The Primals that perform for ffiv fanfest and have their own concert tour (the music being rearrange rock version of the game soundtracks). I stopped playing cause of rl but the music in this game is definitely something I keep checking back
Shadowbringers is the Trailer music for the expansion. It is amazing mash up of many different tracks used in Shadowbringers. Such as Emerald Winds, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Who brings Shadows.
It is a fight theme at least partially. But it's also your character theme in a way for the part of the story it plays in
If you really want a song to dissect, FF14's "Answers" is a great piece.
shadowbringers violin solo is actually a leitmotif of an older final fantasy song eternal wind from final fantasy 3 soken likes to use leitmotif in a lot of his songs.
All I'm hearing is we need another video, with the video. lol.
Love seeing someone pop the cork on FFXIV reactions
welcome to the world of Masayoshi Soken
