He wrote the first half of the song a while back but felt it was incomplete so did not record it. In his interview with Knox Hill he ended up discussing Joe's suicide. After that he sat down at the piano and the 2nd half of the song just poured out and he recorded it as he wrote it. Does not get much more real than that.
Suicide is not just an end... it begins the guilt, the doubt, the loss, for those that remain. Ren had been with his friend earlier in the evening, his friend made a comment about dying, Ren didn't realize. After he left Ren got a call that his friend was on a bridge, he started running... he was the 1st one to the bridge, but he was too late. They searched for the body for days but it was never found. You can tell Ren feels the guilt of not realizing the comment mattered and his friend was in trouble. It's unfortunate that he'll carry that forever because that happens a lot. A side comment that's laughed off that leaves you with heavy guilt and doubt and pain. I would tell him to forgive himself (even though he did nothing wrong). He never will though.
