I actually love this lens. I find that it has a lot of character. Using it with my Sony a 6400, and because these cameras have such great ISO capability, the F4 is not that much of a problem, but you definitely can't use it without cranking up your ISO once it gets dark. Or even begins to get dark. But with a good amount of light, this lens is really awesome. Really heavy, but that actually helps to stabilize the camera somewhat. I shoot only video, so I don't really have any opinion as a still photos camera, but for video, it's really awesome. Thanks for the great review.
Excellent upload! I'm an A6000 user and hopeful A6500 or A6700* user in the future. I don't think the 18-105 will be replaced anytime soon. Seems like you can't go wrong.
I only have kit lens and i want to buy new lens, is it better to buy this one or is it better to buy tamron 70-300, i like to take picture in an event and i like to take macro photograpy too and sometime do landscape photography, what do you think i should buy?
I'm looking at getting the fx30 do you think this would be a good lens for run and gun gorilla Style documentary. Say if you wanted a one to two lens setup?

Hi Carles, the sigma 16 would be a better choice if you need super wide and low light performance. This lens is only f4 so does not let much light in and that extra 2mm on the focal length is noticable
this lens with a A7II sucks cause the a7ii does not have super35 mode, instead it has crop mode witch really drops the video quality. I tried out my 18-105 on a a6300 and the footage came out more sharper on the apsc body then the full frame. I guess on the a7iii it looks way better
I first had this lens with my Sony A6300 and I didn't think to much of it (fairly slow focussing, not very good for action) but I recently bought a Sony A7C ( = full frame) and before choosing what ff lens to buy I checked out this lens in the crop mode and I was...... totally swept off my feet by it! Very quick and correct focussing and tracking, nice and sharp foto's - very clear that it had more good qualities than the A6300 could let it show. Result : I haven't bought a ff lens yet, I'm too pleased with this one, especially when you compare prices to ff lenses ánd the fact that it weighs less ánd zooms internally (y) .
Hi. I have a little loose sound that you can hear if you tilt the lens up and down, its like something is loose inside that makes a little sound... It is only like this when the camera is turned off. When its on there is no sound at all.. Could it be the OSS mecanism that is like this or is the lens might broken? It does work excellent in both movie and photos. Do you have the same thing on your lens?
Do you know if this lens is parfocal? Meaning that if you set it on manual focus at any zoom range, and the image is focused, then you zoom to any range, and the image stays in focus? Edit: By the way, thank you for this video. Totally wanted to see if you could use it on a full frame camera.
I was on the fence with this lens but quite new to Sony A6000 after switching from Nikon. Its been a little bit of a learning curve. The size and weight of this lens was the killer for me, especially for travel. Soon heading OS (thankfully to escape aussie summer) and had dismissed the thought of 18-105 entirely, preferring 10-18 and kit lens. Now after watching this video I'm re-thinking. Perhaps I haven't really persisted in getting over the size/weight hump.
Hello! I just recently got into the Sony A6000 camera and have been using the 1.8/50 OSS lens and was wondering if this lens would be worth going to? I mostly only take photos.
I have the lens & its very useful as with clear zoom its range extends to 300+m. So one can go from a wide archtiectural perspective to a micro perspective with the zoom magnification. Zoom is very smooth so good for video & relatively light for a zoom lens that gives this range - oss & a silent motor. I am curious how it make work on the a7r4 both in crop mode and in FF(and with manual crop of the vignetted area)
Hi, I have sony a7iii with 18-105 lens. Any adapter to convert it into full frame??? Please let me know sir. I will be very happy if you can me tell me about it. Thanks
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for your kindly reply. One more thing. On video mode it's making only 24fps. So video can't made good. What is the problem

hello, i have a6000 with kit lenses 16-50 and 55-210 , i find it difficult to use because of zoom range, the 16-50 is wide and 55-210 is tele so im thinking if 18-105 but with no additional budget by selling off 16-50 and 55-210, so will it be a good decision ? thanks

Not really neccessary to upgrade to the a6500 from you a6300 in my opinion. You are not missing out on much. Mainly the ibis and improved auto focus are the main differences there. So depends how you shoot

Sony a9 just released a firmware which allows the photographer to shoot at an aspect ratio of 1:1, and based on your test, it seems that this lens is usable through the entire focal range at 1:1!
Make sure you enable profile corrections in camera and also in lightroom for photography you can enable it there. Other than that this must be used on an aps-c camera and not full frame. Full frame must be in cropped mode for use
@@haydens465 oh no worries. Throw it in crop mode and you'll get rid of the vignetting haha. Although multiply the focal length by 1.5 and you will have your actually focal length
