While Flugelhorn is my primary instrument these days, I have never understood this approach, is there some reason that horn makers (who are often times also trumpet makers) did not standardize on a receiver ID? This adds SOOOO many issue to the flugel as a player, I have close to 100 mouthpieces and they are all to varying degrees seated differently in all of my horns... lol I mean Schilke for example, depending upon what era you purchase from are WIDLY variable in terms of the shank...Some of my horns come with multiple receivers and they are not even the same as on other hors despite the fact that they claim they are either Large Morse or Small Morse tapers? So why all the complications here? Was there some reason that everyone couldn't just use the same standard as is used on trumpets? Cool video, I also have 3 or your pieces and they are excellent :)
I have some originals from the 1830's and 1840's, and the shanks weren't standardised back then either, so obviously wacky shank-sizes are a flugel tradition. I don't even bother to try mouthpieces any more. I get my service guy to measure the inside of the lead-pipe and use the measurements to have mouthpieces made. I also have 1880's early Bb trumpets and mouthpieces, and they're all over the place too. It's like going into a hardware store, and instead of finding standardised staplers and staples, you run into a whole wall of junk that's been deliberately made to fit only one type. Leave it to some jackass with a pocket-protector and white tape holding his glasses together. They've always been around.
German taper with standard/american sized leadpipe... Is it an application that useful, or not? Any idea? I asked because I've a chinese flugelhorn(american tapers) and only mouthpieces that I found nearby stores are german taper-kind.
Kim,
Thanks for this video. I've read this info before, but it is a great help to have someone as knowledgeable as you talk me through it.
Very well presented, most helpful, thank you.

I bought a SOLISTA Flugalhorn. My Bach 3 c mp almost went all the way in.
How about a nice chart of cross-sections with measurements instead of verbal descriptions using relative terms ? A picture is worth 1000 words.

I didn’t know Conn V1 has its own taper. What would be the closest taper if V1 taper isn’t available?
I have a Yamaha 631g flugelhorn what size do I get ?
