- What should you do if your car suddenly goes into a skid? To help teenagers prepare for emergency situations, Consumer Reports hosted a day-long driving course. This lesson teaches teens how to control their vehicle during a skid.
Should be a national course to be approved for license
yeah. but to be honest, the kids will learn how to skid if anything. some kids may find this fun and then begin to practise it on the roads. so its really a win lose situation.
In multiple western european countries this is now a mandatory course to get your drivers license
In Japan this is not mandatory. But we have to go to driving school. In my case, it was 16days training camp with a hotel stay.
Yes it and should be state funded, but the likely hood to that is slim. More Money from our pockets
"Turning into the skid" is exactly what she means by steering "where you want to go." If you're oversteering, then you want to turn *less* than the car is currently turning. So you turn away from the oversteer until the car straightens out and you straighten the steering--because now the car is going where you want it to go.
If you find yourself in a skid, just drift it out.
either bring this back or let us do drift in empty parking lots 😬
WOW! i can be just like ken block now! time to hit the school zones:)
One thing she did not mention at all is liftoff over-steer. The only thing you can do to correct that is to give the car lots of throttle. Most cases can't be corrected with steering. Learned that one the hard way.
If your rear wheel slides out your meant to turn your wheel in the opposite direction and power out of it or apply breaking force to slow down the front wheels if necessary, not keep it in the same direction. If you do what the narration says you'll spin out.
@ktonkin3 maybe i missed it... she said turn in the direction you want to go, which to me says keep the front wheels oriented in the line you want to take... or am i just that much better of a driver than her that my mind autoproofread it?
either way, she needs to learn how to be more clear lol.
Awww I came here to learn how to stop or prevent a skid but I learnt nought. :(
I just saw some happy faces. :)
you should have listened better
NO U CAN'T DO IT HAHA
*i'm here 12 years later watching this video*
I recovered from a skid recently for the first time in my life! I was driving in snowy weather and I was making a right turn at a T-intersection! My car fishtailed, prompting me to turn the wheel to the left, until the car fishtailed the other way, prompting me to turn it the other way. After several fishtails I eventually regained control and got the car straightened out!
What is the "direction of the skid"? If you are skidding right and turn more right surely that will not help the situation?
Its to maintain semi control. Direction of traction on your tires won't grip when they have broken loose. Turning in helps you to not over correct and also puts the vehicle where all 4 tires are creating skid and friction. Once you have slowed enough you can then regain control.
The advice in this video is wrong. Avoid.
Control a skid? More like learn to drift,
Better advice: Take a skid control class
@ktonkin3 leave the driving safety stuff to the experts. these guys know what they're doing, and in comparison, you're looking like some random person trying to troll the video. it's easy to see the Consumer Reports is the one to side with, and troll is equal or greater than epic fail.
Most of those cars were front wheel drive anyway, so it's not like they are going to be doing doughnuts in them...
@GordanMFreeman true, some drivers might know how to handle a skid, but some don't. that is why they uploaded this video, for the sake of drivers who don't know how to deal with a skid.
I am a good driver on the icy road, but I need some practices on your road that is shown in the video.
So how the CR can help?
drive in circles
I was always told to turn into the direction of the skid. Surely this would make you turn 180 though? When I've had 4 wheel lock ups under heavy breaking and started to skid, I turned in the opposite direction and applied throttle to kick the rear back in line.
@ktonkin3 look and steer in the direction you want to go. This will compensate for understeer, oversteer, brakesteer and torquesteer
#NoMoreCraptions. Please properly caption your videos. Auto-captions are unreliable.
this video was made in 2011 before youtube captions were avaliable
this is pretty basi stuff
just saying
This looks like so much fun
this is fun
this is important to new drivers. Thank you, consumer reports.
Lesson 1. Proper hands placement while driving should be in the position of 9 and 3 o'clock. Having your arms crossed, right hand reversed during emergency steering will cause a driver to lose control of the vehicle faster.
*Your brats should know this stuff.* Parents, do your due diligence.
But that tends to abruptly change weight and makes you over-correct.
