In the dictionary there should be a picture of Tom Petty next to the word cool. Awesome songs, great songwriter. You are truly missed.

I can't help it. Tom Petty in an interview which I have to situate defined the word cool as 'fear wearing black'. WOW.

100% Agree. Songs of my young life-up through my daughters, her surprising me at her Wedding, the Song we danced to: “Last Dance w/Mary Jane” which she wanted to hear every morning driving to daycare @ 5 years old. Much like the Cool Guy scalpin concert tickets in Fast Times @ Ridgemont High !

"A Woman In Love" (But It's Not Me) is without doubt one of my very favorite Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers songs of all time. They perform it beautifully live here. In fact, the band is so tight it sounds almost like the record.
What I love so much about this composition is the way that the vocals, music and lyrics fit together perfectly to convey the feeling of... yes...
    HEARTBREAK.
    It's something everyone has experienced.
I was young and going through a break-up with an even younger girlfriend right around the time this album came out.
"A Woman In Love" (But It's Not Me) resonated so strongly with me that I never forgot the lyrics.
    When Tom sings the line:
"She used to be the kinda woman, you have and you hold,
She could understand a problem, she let the little things go..."
It's not just a fond description of his former lover. The quivering sound of Tom's voice also demonstrates the absolute shock he feels that THIS WOMAN chose to leave him for another man.
If you're actually IN this situation, the effect is devastating.

I bought Damm the Torpedoes when I was 15 and played it constantly.I then bought Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You Gonna Get it and every week checked out the record store for the next album. I still have them all on vinyl and feel a little like my old man with his Elvis records.
I get old but Music is timeless.
    Rock on!

Same here but I was only 11 when Torpeados came out and I bought it. When hard promises came out and I went to buy it I was 50 cents short, so I bought the 45 of The Waiting, with an odd song called "Night Watchmen" on the B side. Almost 56, and though it does' kind of suck getting old I wouldn't change it, because I'm very thankful I grew up in that era of block parties and tackle football in the rain, and where (for the most part) kid's appreciated what they had much more than they do today.

I like a drummer that doesn't go crazy with fills , just emotional and passionate . That is Stan. @@Boatdockmlh1 He was HILARIOUS... loved the bio .. arranging groupies on the bus; going off with Tom's hero Bob Dylan in Las Vegas to watch Frank Sinatra; he was also a fucking shit disturber and Benmont Tench when drinking which was still going on during Full Moon Fever which was the real reason I believe it was nominally a solo album was and is not to be trusted frankly no matter how much I respect his musical genius. Does that sound horrible? Well it's all about personalities and it didn't work out and the Heartbreakers went on to do other music and this music was possible live yes a lot because of Stan Lynch's explosive drumming which enabled Tom when he was young to let loose. ..... I sure Hope Tom is resting in peace. I also hope he would be okay with me finding a new band that I really like too, called We Are Scientists.

Same Haircut as Eric Johnson had in 1990! Great musical minds trend alike!
