Orlando Magic had a legitimate chance to play in the NBA Finals and they let it all slip away because of a rule change. The next season the Magic were the worst team in the league. I remember by the end of the season, nobody was playing with any effort anymore. You don't see a franchise fall apart like that so quickly too often. 2003 was a year that ANYBODY could have been in the NBA Finals. There were only 8 wins separating the 1st & 8th seeds in the East that year. It's also interesting that had Orlando knocked out Detroit, it would have meant that the 76ers would have had a much better path to the NBA Finals as well. Had Detroit not come back from 1-3, it might have ended up being a 2nd Finals appearance for Allen Iverson. I always thought it was a shame that Tracy McGrady and Steve Francis were traded for each other. It would have been interesting to see how things would have panned out if those two just stayed with the franchises they were superstars for.

I brought up Philadelphia 76ers because had Orlando beaten Detroit in the 1st Round, the 2nd Round would have been 76ers/Magic, I think that would have been a better matchup for Philadelphia as well, in real life the 76ers were handled quite easily by the Pistons, but I think had the Magic faced the 76ers, Philadelphia would have matched up much better to them, and possibly won. The Eastern Finals could have just as easily been Nets/76ers, but because Orlando let Detroit win, it forced 76ers to play Pistons who they did not match up well with having traded Mutombo the season before.
Fam, people wanna discredit those Nets teams like they didn’t sweep Boston and Detroit on their way to the finals. If Orlando was so good they wouldn’t have blown a 3-1 lead and got blown out in game 7. The Nets were the best team in the east that year by far. Don’t let regular season records fool you. It always grew longer and longer. The NBA Playoffs used to only be 3 rounds from the 1940s to 1970s. Originally when they added the extra round, the "1st Round", it was Best of 3. That is how the Houston Rockets knocked out the Los Angeles Lakers in 1981, they beat them 2-0 and ended up carrying the momentum all the way to the NBA Finals. They changed it to a 5 Game Series after that to avoid similar "unfair" upsets. Imagine if they had kept the 1st Round Best of 3, it would have changed so much throughout history. Charles Barkley's 1993 Phoenix Suns would have been eliminated in the 1st Round under the original setup.

imo, this performance by T-Mac (or even his 46 point game 2 days later) was greater than Iverson's 50+ point games against the Raptors or his 48 point game against the Lakers, Kobe's 50 against the Suns, or LeBron's 51 against the Warriors. For one reason, the Pistons were the 4th best defensive team in the league this season while the Raptors and Suns were average, the Warriors were 11th in their respective seasons. Also, AI's 48 points, Kobe's 50, and LeBron's 51 all went to overtime (AI scored 7 in OT, while Kobe and LeBron scored 12 and 2, respectively). Third, LeBron's 51 came when the game was more opened up bc of 3s and softened w/o hand-checks (same with Kobe's 50 although his team wasn't as 3-point heavy). Last, McGrady's 46 points was nearly 60% of his team's total points (77) which is the highest % of a team's total points out of the names I mentioned. In terms of the criteria I used, only Vince Carter's 50 points against the 76ers is as (or more impressive) as the 76ers were the best defensive team that season, he played during the hand-check era still, there wasn't as much floor spacing, and he scored all of his points in regulation.
Except you're forgetting the fact that the 01 Lakers had the best defense in the playoffs. Their defense was even better than the Spurs defense in the regular season and the Spurs had the number 1 defense in the league that year. And A.I. still dropped 48 on them. Not to mention the Lakers was overall just a better team. So the fact that A.I. was able to bring them back from a huge deficit *to win* and the fact that they were not just a better defensive team but also a better team(as that Lakers team was red hot and on a historic tear) in general makes A.I. 48 more impressive.
So no one's going to mention the commentators should have been the ones in charge in our draft pick talking about how this team needs a legit forward..Smh...

LBJ began forming super teams right in the beginning of his prime via free agency which creates a major imbalance issue because the team he leaves doesn't get anything back and it assures that the team he goes to will be dominant for the *long term.* Hence why LBJ was bragging about winning 7 rings before they even played a game yet. Once Miami started going on the decline and get weaker he jumped ship and formed a super team somewhere else making another instant contender and avoiding the process of having to go through a rebuild. A luxury guys who stay on one team like Curry don't have. LBJ popularized guys hopping all over the place in the middle of their prime to get the easy ring as he jumped from 3 different teams in just one decade. KD took his formula and perfected it by going to the Warriors which was already a dominant team. Now he is doing it again with the Nets who everyone knows is gonna win the championship. Harden reputation will change drastically just like LBJ and Durant because he has a ring even though like them he did it in the most easiest way possible. SMH!

My goodness Kemp looked completely fat and out of shape. It's sad how his turned out after being traded from Seattle in 1997. All of his substance abuse problems, weight problems, and paternity problems killed his career. He was on his way into the Hall of Fame. Just sad.

imo, this performance by T-Mac (or even his 46 point game 2 days later) was greater than Iverson's 50+ point games against the Raptors or his 48 point game against the Lakers, Kobe's 50 against the Suns, or LeBron's 51 against the Warriors.
For one reason, the Pistons were the 4th best defensive team in the league this season while the Raptors and Suns were average, the Warriors were 11th in their respective seasons. Also, AI's 48 points, Kobe's 50, and LeBron's 51 all went to overtime (AI scored 7 in OT, while Kobe and LeBron scored 12 and 2, respectively). Third, LeBron's 51 came when the game was more opened up bc of 3s and softened w/o hand-checks (same with Kobe's 50 although his team wasn't as 3-point heavy). Last, McGrady's 46 points was nearly 60% of his team's total points (77) which is the highest % of a team's total points out of the names I mentioned.
In terms of the criteria I used, only Vince Carter's 50 points against the 76ers is as (or more impressive) as the 76ers were the best defensive team that season, he played during the hand-check era still, there wasn't as much floor spacing, and he scored all of his points in regulation.
Except you're forgetting the fact that the 01 Lakers had the best defense in the playoffs. Their defense was even better than the Spurs defense in the regular season and the Spurs had the number 1 defense in the league that year. And A.I. still dropped 48 on them. Not to mention the Lakers was overall just a better team. So the fact that A.I. was able to bring them back from a huge deficit *to win* and the fact that they were not just a better defensive team but also a better team(as that Lakers team was red hot and on a historic tear) in general makes A.I. 48 more impressive.

The Chicago Bulls made the playoffs at 30-52 and 38-44 in the 80s. Was the East weak then? Orlando was the 8 seed at 42-40, this season.
