He has taken a lot influence from Mexican designers Arlette and Willy Chavarria as well as Chicano culture. His album cover for Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers as well as his music video NLU where he is in all white, he is dressed like a Chicano from the 80's and early 90's. He even posted his inspiration on his finsta jojoruski.
@@jamesmccaul2945 This was outta left field and uncalled for, The person just said that they were glad that they weren't the only one appreciating his fit, why are you making it deeper than it is?
Saw him in concert in last year; his style, his aura, is the thing that stood out. I recall exactly what he wore like it was yesterday and remember thinking “this is someone who knows exactly who he is.” It's amazing when an artist's style and presence resonate deeply.
The black hat that says “God” in the NLUS music video was from an LA Mexican fashion brand called “Ghetto Rodeo” Kendrick is really showing love to small brands
I think, somewhere between TPAB and DAMN, Kendrick started to see and understand that fashion is an artform that he can use as an extension of his art so in his DAMN era, he really started tapping into fashion. His DAMN, Mr Morale and now GNX eras have different styles. You can tell from a photo which era he was/is in. But now he is being more intentional about who he collaborates with because he also understands his influence. Love your findings. New sub from me.
This is a really great observation. Recently revisiting Kendrick's MV's from the TPAB era and its all very vaguely defined but trendy for the mid-to-late 2010s. Then DAMN felt more personalised in a stylistic sense, but I really think towards the emergence of Baby Keem and Melodic Blue's release in 2021 that Kendrick's new-found fashion and collabs with Martine Rose became well established. Its almost like with 6 albums now you can cut Kendrick's discography in half from Section80 to TPAB and then DAMN to GNX based on his use of fashion. Untitled Unmastered is the bridge between both.
@jordanp9351 I love this take. The fact that Untitled Unmastered is the bridge between TPAB and DAMN sonically, conceptually, style-wise, and visually (even though UU doesn't have any mysic videos) makes it an even more important project in his discography.
its in Hillbillies where he claims hes best dressed moving forward. the shift really happened during the Super Bowl performance with Dre, which matches up more with Keems Melodic Blue, pre-roll out to Mr Morale rather than DAMN., thats too early
I love the uniqueness of Kendrick's style recently. He looks timeless in the pictures we are currently seing of him, while still fitting the moment. I think that's what great art is able to do more then anything
Art vs celebrity, he’s not constantly spamming us with news about his life, letting his works stand for themselves. He could be proclaiming all his charity work but sees it’s not about him first but the community he is trying to improve. Separating the art from the artist as he’s talked about before.
YES!! I’m so glad you’re talking about this!! The way I’ve wanted to reach through the screen and take every one of his outfits for myself over the past few years has been driving me crazy lol, and the evolution in his fashion has so clearly blossomed!! It’s so cool! His designers are phenomenal!!
I genuinely love when i find someone who *knows* about an artstyle that i have no clue about, but obviously enjoy. I am completely lost when it comes to fashion, but kendricks newer style is something that i immediately *LOVED* , but i had no idea how to articulate / understand it so thanks for the beautiful video :)
YES. I remember seeing him in concert last year and being in absolute awe of his style and the intentionality between his style and music/performance. So well curated!
how do you guys feel about his new style? ⭐️ ALSO just an fyi ik the sound is janky i literally do all the editing on my phone as well as the voiceovers so bare with meeeee thank you!
Great vid! Been wanting someone to talk about this as he has been killing it. He knows how to be minimalist and profile all his looks. You can tell he knows what fits him. More so it's his confidence than anything else that really beams through it all.
I love Kendrick Lamar’s aesthetic recently in his style and his music. I love how he always pays homage to the culture that raised him. Enjoyed this video, please keep making more content.
As a creative and Kendrick fan I am happy to see this content. He also partners With Mexican American brands Willy Chavarria and Ghetto Rodeo as he also pays homage to LA Mexican culture
amazing video, i remember pointing it out that he looks different to my friends. then i realized that he’s been consistently working out & probably has a clean diet. even in the new album he mentioned running 6 miles to get his wind. in the “pop out” concert he did the whole thing in a hoodie and did not once look tired. pair that with some amazing garments by some amazing creators it’ll birth a new style
this deserves to go viral fr.. kendrick giving the spotlight to black women post-war has been amazing and hasnt been talked about at all. even the editor in chief of harpers bazaar is a black woman and she got the first look from him.. and sza will co-headline his tour..
Being 100% was completely oblivious to this kind of thing on general but especially in big industry names ect but found your video really interesting and enjoyed linking it back to a genuine meaning in the style and not just the style itself, really cool stuff
This video was great! I've never heard of Bonner or Rose, I don't know much about fashion but I just subbed. Your insight is appreciated, hoping this video gets more views
Awesome video, very thoughtful. It's cool how through your analysis we can draw a very strong link between kendrick's fashion and messaging in his music, not only through the clothes themselves but the people behind them.
I heard from another commentator that Taz Arnold of the band Sa-Ra Creative Partners was also a big style icon for Kendrick, I thought that was interesting too. GNX has LA culture all over it. Thanks for your perspective
Very nice video. I’m not used to seeing people analyze fashion at this level. It’s pretty cool how we use clothing to achieve different things. Not just for the sake of not being naked. Thank you for reminding me of this!
Cool vid - in the next one if you do something similar you should show more examples and break them down. That extra level of specificity will do dividends!
Kendrick has always been fashionable he knows his style and wears it well you should see what he wore during the day n Vegas festival he looked like new age Jesus in all white
Great Video however I’d Argue that Grace Wales Bonner touches on the Afro-Caribbean diaspora blended with European tailoring. I think this is because her heritage is more towards the Afro-Caribbean’s who immigrated to the UK.
Just stumbled across your channel and this is the second video i've watched. I want to say I really appreciate the length of your videos. I see other people say they want longer form videos from you, and a variety of content is totally important, i just have to say the 7-11 minute time frame is just so perfect for my attention span.

Jokes on you, LA been heritage by mexican culture a lot. actually Los Angeles was once the part of Mexico..@@thacosmoswahnted3320
I was gonna mention Willy Chavarria. Cause all the clips from “Not Like Us” Kendrick Lamar is wear his clothes.
