    Um hino
    à dor da ancestralidade,
    ao fardo incontornável
    mas sempre superável,
    do karma coletivo...

É meu e vosso este fado
    Destino que nos amarra
    Por mais que seja negado
    Às cordas de uma guitarra
Sempre que se ouve um gemido
    De uma guitarra a cantar
    Fica-se logo perdido
    Com vontade de chorar
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Agora é que eu percebi
    Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que a recebi
    E pareceria ternura
    Se eu me deixasse embalar
    Era maior a amargura
    Menos triste o meu cantar
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Agora é que eu percebi
    Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que a recebi
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Agora é que eu percebi
    Esta tristeza que trago
    Esta tristeza que trago
    Foi de vós que recebi

    Oh gente della mia terra
È mio e vostro questo fado
    destino che ci unisce
    per quanto lo si neghi
    le corde di una chitarra...
    Sempre a sentire il lamento
    di una chitarra che canta
    si resta d'improvviso smarriti
    col desiderio di piangere
    Oh gente della mia terra
    ora ho capito
questa tristezza che porto con me
è da voi che l'ho avuta
    E sembrerebbe dolcezza
    se mi lasciassi illudere,
    sarebbe più grande l'amarezza,
    meno triste il mio cantare.
    Oh gente della mia terra
    ora ho capito
questa tristezza che porto con me
è da voi che l'ho avuta
    Oh gente della mia terra
    ora ho capito
questa tristezza che porto con me
è da voi che l'ho avuta

É meu e vosso este fado
It is yours and mine, this fado
    Destino que nos amarra
It is a destiny that binds us (together)
    Por mais que seja negado
No matter how much you may deny it
    Às cordas de uma guitarra
(we are bound together) by the strings of the guitarra
Sempre que se ouve o gemido
Every time you hear the groaning
    De uma guitarra a cantar
    Of a guitarra singing
    Fica-se logo perdido
    You find yourself lost
    Com vontade de chorar
    With a desire to cry
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Oh, people of my land
    Agora é que eu percebi
Now I have come to understand
    Esta tristeza que trago
That this sadness that I carry with me
    Foi de vós que recebi
I get it, from all of you
    E pareceria ternura
And, perhaps it might be a tenderness
    Se eu me deixasse embalar
If I were left to pack up
    Era maior a amargura
    Most of this bitterness
    Menos triste o meu cantar
It might make my singing less sad
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Oh, people of my land
    Ó gente da minha terra
    Oh, people of my land
    Agora é que eu percebi
Now I have come to understand
    Esta tristeza que trago
That this sadness that I carry with me
    Esta tristeza que trago
That this sadness that I carry with me
    Foi de vós que recebi
I get it, from all of you

"Às" and not "As" (cordas de uma guitara). Huge difference in meaning.
So the right translation would be "At the strings of a guitar"
What is she talking about? - The Fado
What is the Fado (in her point of view)? - A destiny that binds us
What happens/is happening to the fado? - It's constantly denied
Where is being denied? - At the strings of a guitar.
.Translation below is not accurate too. More appropriate:
    .It is mine and yours this fado;
    A destiny that binds us,
no matter how much it is denied,
At the chords of a guitar

It is "For more that is denied to the strings of a guitar" not "even though denied the strings of a guitar" it changes totally the meaning. I will not translate more, only to show that the translation is not really faithful.

Argoon1981 It is one thought. "Even though" is an accurate translation but the translation is still incorrect. The first stanza should read like this. "It is mine and yours this fado. The destiny that binds us... even though it is denied... the chords of a guitar" What she is saying is the destiny that binds herself and fado are the chords of a guitar. The verb is not in that thought but poetically understood. This song is about the music of fado itself and how her ability to express sadness to the people was a gift given to her by fado and those who created it. The translation is not a good one. I will try to post a better one on here.

Joseph Sronce I'm portuguese i know what she is saying, what she is saying in portuguese is "por mais que seja negado as cordas de uma guitarra" what she means here is that everything is being denied to the strings (or cords) of a guitar, what you and him are saying is that the ones denied are the cords, do you see the problem?

    • @lv2flynvy
      @lv2flynvy 9 років тому +4

Argoon1981 I speak many languages but English is my native tongue and what you just said in English makes no sense at all. I am fluent in Portugese and Spanish is also a native tongue to me. They are very similar languages. "por mais que seja negado" is very similar in Spanish "por mas que haya negado" and the meaning is the same in english and can be translated many ways but is understood as, "Even though it may be denied." It is a dependent clause just like "as cordas de uma guitarra" which relies on an implied verb "ser" to complete the idea. I can be paraphrased like this. "Por mais que seja negado, o destino que nos amarra são as cordas da uma guitarra." "Even though it may be deined, the destiny that binds us are strings of a guitar." The destiny that binds the singer, fado, and the people of Portugal are the traditional steel strings of a guitar that is characteristic of the musical style "fado."

  • @lv2flynvy

This translation is not perfectly accurate. The following is a better one:
    It is mine and yours this fado;
    The destiny that binds us,
no matter how much it is denied,
(being) the chords of a guitar.
It is always heard, the weeping
    of a guitar singing
    one soon finds themselves lost
    in a desire to cry
Oh the people of my land
it is now that I realize
    this sadness that I bring
it was from you that i received it.
    It would appear weakness
if I let myself get entangled
    It was (would be) greater the bitterness;
    less sad my singing
Oh the people of my land
it is now that I realize
    this sadness that I bring
it was from you that i received it.
This song is about fado itself being a traditionally sad music from Portugal characterized by the melancholy sounds of a guitar with steel strings and sad lyrics. That is why the song is called, "Oh the people of my land." She speaks of her ability to express sadness to others was a gift given to her by her people, the people of Portugal, through the creation of fado.
