  • Just a quick video if anyone is needing help with installing lift gate and glass struts (shocks) on their GMT 800.
This includes but not limited to: Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Escalade.
In all honesty the process is similar for most vehicles so it might be worth a watch even if you don't own any of those vehicles.
    Parts used:
Lift Gate Strut: AC Delco 510-850 amzn.to/3SFcPQR
Glass Strut: AC Delco 510-1012 amzn.to/49e0PfY

I need to make my 2018 Subaru Forester Tailgate raise JUST about two or three inches higher. I, a coworker, and family members have all smashed their heads off the left and right side of the rear hatch when empty. JUST high enough to be out of your line of sight, just low enough to dent your dome.

2-3 inch lift in the rear? Ha
I'm not sure if you could make it go higher or not if it's not currently using the hold height feature.
My Gen 5 has the feature but might not be calling it the correct thing. When the power tailgate worked there was a button to have it only lift so high. It was user programmable so shorter people could still be able to reach.
I'm not sure if the 2018 Foz got it or not.

@@bruceyyyyy I think your first solution is the way to go. 😉👍
Its a manual lift gate on the base model. Nothing fancy, just like this video, gas hydraulic. I'm wondering if I can just get longer struts or put a metal plate under the bottom mount. Idk. I've learned to only approach from directly inline with the rear (it's worked in my dating life, why not my car? 🤓), but it's tagged enough ignorant people to warrant a fix.

Interesting! It might be limited by the hinge. I would disconnect the struts and see if the hinges bind any if you lift it.
I can almost guarantee they will remove the same way in the video.
If they don't and you have a few more inches then check that you're not over extending the wiring harness.
If it all clears then it's just a matter of finding equal lifting shocks that extend more.
Due to the arc if you're after 2-3 inches at the top of the swing the strut probably only needs an inch more of travel.
Interesting project! Lemme know how else I can help.

@@bruceyyyyy I hadn't thought of disconnecting the struts and just manually lifting the gate to insure it doesn't bind/hyperextend. That would be simple and fast enough to do. Then I can measure the current shock and determine what length I would need. 🤓👍 Thanks, friend.
