Beautiful wonderful video, such an amazing spot , obviously not the sort of place to hike out alone if you can help it, so easy to get into trouble , thank you great video , inspiring just great
Also, pasta and sauce is a food I rarely eat at home, but when hiking it seems to be my top favourite hiking food, it is very low weight and the sauce is / was available in multipack tiny packets enough for just one person , when I hiked Yosemite and Olympic I took always this food and packed before I left , I remember Canada customs checking the food items. Hot fresh pasta is great outdoors after a long walk and so light to carry . Also you can add tins of sardines for much greater protein and calories for not much weight
Yeah was actually thinking that as well when walking through the bogs that it would be best to come back in winter 😂. Can only imagine how bad it will be with the insects in the warmer month!
Thank you very much! Aye is really nice to use it with a frying pan as well - probably would need a bigger burner for meat but the 30ml burner is enough for bread when using a thin frying pan (in this case it was the trangia one from the 27 kit). Thanks a lot Stripey
Hi Stripey Despite almost 50 years of stravaiging the scottish hills only been to Ben Alder Bothy once back in 1982!! Walked in from Bridge of Gaur only boggy bit if i remember was last 2 miles. Bothy has had an extension and much renovation in last 40 years and looks the better for it. Always impressed with your culinary skills in the 80's I carried in tins as dehydrated meals were yet to be invented.
Oh wow, would have loved to see it back then! Yeah the dehydrated meals are just so good for carrying less, to my defense I do them at least by myself as I think the bought ones are just a rip-off + I like to know what I eat 😂 Thanks you very much for sharing your trip! Cheers Stripey
Any ghostly encounters near the bothy? I’m plotting a few days there soon to tackle Munros in that area but the internet is full of stories about this bothy which makes me uneasy. A stunning and convenient location for bagging though !
Yeah me too! Great scenery but next time I will wait for better weather and come via one of the hill routes rather than along the shore line 😂 Cheers Stripey
Hi Stripey 👋. Nice relaxing camp. I see you’re sporting the uber light 700, magnificent. Stunning scenery as usual. Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your adventures. Serk
Hi Serk 👋, Cheers! This was actually my last hand cut version. The video of the first cut was from the same day, this bothy overnighter was from the week before - was just so happy that all worked out that I wanted to share the other one first 😂
Oh I haven’t been in Dalwhinie at all yet (at least I don’t remember)! Really enjoyed the scenery, the walk is probably more enjoyable when the ground is proper frozen 😉
Did that route in the middle of the summer , definitely less boggy 😅 Less boggy but lots more midges 😂 Pity you got the low clouds because its a lovely area 👍 You didn't show the nice flat grass bit that's good for camping .
Thank you for the video. Its on my hit list this year, but think I will cycle in from Dalwhinnie, and climb Ben Alder and the 5 other munros, ATB, Angus
Thanks a lot for watching! Yeah definitely better to spend some more time up there and actually getting some mountains under the belt. I will definitely go back as well to explore some of the mountains in the area 👍 Cheers Stripey
The bog of Scotland can swallow you , good one 😂😂😂. You had a good laugh but I think your friend wasnt glad to be caught on camera 😮 . Thanks for the hike and for the warning about the Scotland bog of hell 💩
Great video again Stripey. I'd been meaning to revisit this bothy at some point. Only been once, and came from Dalwhinnie to do it, before bog-trotting over to Rannoch Station. You are far kinder than me I have to say. If I was filming myself pulling someone from a bog and the camera fell over, I'd definately reset the camera and go for another take! 😂😂😂
Oh actually the video is from last weekend and the cone was my last hand cut version (#6). The machined version I used this weekend the first time, but as expected no surprises 😂👍. Thanks a lot Stripey
Oh nice! Looked at this way as well but it looked like that would involve a hill crossing/ or shuffling along the shores of Loch Ericht but it looked like on the map that just before the bothy that the path would be rather a scramble if possible at all!
Great video the bothy isn’t haunted then ? Others staying there have reported strange things happening there great blog people of North Korea like it cheers
Brilliant Stripey. Tis a fine bothy indeed. And your approach is a great way to it. 👍 What sealskinz socks you got & are they good? Quite fancy getting a pair. Them or looking at Dexshell.
Hi Kev, have the ‘all weather mid length’ version. Got this model as when it is warmer I prefer just wool socks. They work for me alright, if I would buy today I would get the less warm version and would rather wear thicker socks underneath. Also in my experience it is much better to wear some thin socks in the sealskinz as they are not the most breathable socks on the market 😉 Edit: Have no experience with the other brand you mentioned 😎
An especially beautiful location for a bothy, worth the risk of Scotland trying to swallow your fellow hiker up on the way there! I appreciate the effort you've been making to make a variety of meals in recent videos, but I know the pasta bolognese is your favorite. I'm roasting a small piece of wild elk meat that a friend gave me - a hot meal on a winter's night in northern Alberta.
Aye, was a close call that Jack got swallowed by the infamous bog 😂😂😂 I can’t help it, just love my pasta bolognese…but I think a bread fits to it fairly good (garlic bread would have been better but still good so). Never ate Elk in my life but I would imagine it tastes like deer wish I quite like. Thanks a lot for watching Stripey
Elk meat is very lean, red, and mild-tasting. We don't get it very often because elk are very smart about hiding as soon as the hunting season starts. Deer, not so smart. @@StripeyHatGuy
The only thing I could find online was: „The present Ben Alder Cottage probably dates back to 1871 when Sir John Ramsden, owner of Ardverikie and Ben Alder estates, inaugurated a vast programme of building and renovation, road making, fencing and tree planting.“

I stayed there a couple of years ago. I was by myself and had settled into my sleeping bag for the night. At around midnight I was woken by voices outside of the room I was in ( the one with bunk beds ). When I got up and opened the door I saw a group of 4 who had walked in from Dalwhinnie via Ben Alder. Thankfully, they were shattered and soon got off to sleep in one of the other rooms; leaving me to get back to sleep. No ghosts, but ...........
@@gordongreen6125 Haha...any bothy can beat bit spooky IMO, unknown voices in the night from another are just what you don't need! Bye the way Gordon the Tramplite is still going strong...👍
Hi Alistair, it was great to see the video on Ben Alder Cottage. Bit spooky: I hardly ever comment on UA-cam and this time I get a link to your videos and the news that the Tramplite is still going strong. Pleased to hear that.
Yeah absolutely great location! No haven’t had anything abnormal. I do believe so that there are living some mice as one of my house shoes got nibbled 😅
Thank you for the reply. Mice are common in bothies, that,s why you hang up your food. Never get water close to any bothy, people use the area as a toilet! ATB.@@StripeyHatGuy
Thanks for the tips! Yeah I recognised the toilet issue particularly at bothies which are easier accessible…not sure how it could be improved, as in every bothy are clear signs/rules/suggestions what/where to do it. Cheers Stripey
Hi Stripey, what a stunning location Stripey, and a cracking Bothy. Looks like they spent a good deal of time and effort kitting it out. All the very best mate, Dave 😀⛰🥾🏴

A great remote place in the middle of winter.
Yeah was actually thinking that as well when walking through the bogs that it would be best to come back in winter 😂. Can only imagine how bad it will be with the insects in the warmer month!
What a cosy bothy. I was watching the stove on the video whilst sitting in front of our wood burner at home.
Oh that sounds so nice! Would love to have wood burner at home as well - just such a nice heat in comparison to a radiator.
Thanks a lot
Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy we are very lucky to live in an area where we are allowed to burn wood, (the lakedistrict in Cumbria ) I would hate to be without it.
Completely understand it! I grew up with one and from then on always missing it/really looking forward to it when I visit my parents back in Germany.
Nice I saw you use it with a pan more versatile usage is lovely
