Same, it's all fun and games until your leading a convoy bringing canteen to some fob in butt f nowhere and drive through an ambush. Bullets ricochet, rpgs fly, meanwhile your screaming at the wind screen "ALL THIS SO SOME A HOLE CAPT. CAN HAVE HIS RED BULL AND SNICKERS!!"
To be fair that was a young college girl in ROTC. Probably her very first experience doing anything of that sort. On the other hand, this is why we have historically kept them out of combat roles.

As an ex 11C, mortars, I’ll give props to the AG (Assistant Gunner) for still holding onto the round when he fell into the “pit” there. With the collar being as high as it was, I figured it’d be a tube slip coming off the legs. As for the delayed round. They were using the old school cheese charges and they probably got wet or were so old that they didn’t prime and that’s why the round just fizzled out of the tube.
I guess this would be a spoiler alert for anyone who didn't do military service, but if the ammunition is painted light blue then it's a training practice round and won't blow you to bits if you screw up.
Well this sure brought back memories. I was in the military and in one training dudes double loaded mortars. Guys in the proximity were blown to bits and a lot of people were injured. It actually rained blood for a while. Jesus.

As a former Mortar Maggot, I can tell you these munitions aren't supposed to arm to explode until they have travelled a certain safe distance. Our 60 mm ones were 50 meters circa 1992ish.
How are the 50m measured? Is it a time delay? GPS would be wayyy too costly and imprecise for such a round, right? I suppose one could have a small windmilling fanblade or something to arm the fuse? That would seem safer than a timer (for cases where it barely clears the barrel and just flops to the ground)
Well, what something is supposed to do and what it actually does is two different things. It was only 5 or so years ago, a mortar exploded coming out of the tube. I believe it killed 3 soldiers. I know it killed the one female soldier as an Army photographer caught the moment the motor blew up and the female soldier started flying through the air on camera. A wise man once said, "Anything built by man is built to fail."

I've seen so many recovery videos where the vehicle takes off after going upright. You would think everyone would know by now that could happen and I dunno, put on the parking brake or something.
Failed to put blocks under the wheels that were making contact with the ground, and a second anchor vehicle attached to the one being recovered would of also been smart. But it's the US were looking at here, the dopiest of the lot.

It can still do some heavy damage though. Check out ballistic high-speed RPG incident for an example of this.

Those are practice 120 rounds and they do have a small blast radius to them.
