  • Cincinnati Barber Merle Robbins and his son Ray designed one of the most popular games in the world in Uno, and gave us so much fun and connection. This is their story.

    This is the first I've seen of your channel, how the Hell do you not have more views?
    This is really informative stuff and has a lot of history behind a simple card game that I never thought I'd know.
    Keep up the great content, mate!

    I love UNO. My daughter and I collect Uno decks for fun.
    We have the Timeless Toys book behind you as well. It had the most thorough history of UNO I could find in a book. So it is displayed with our Green deck and our 10th anniversary briefcase.

      @@SeizethePlay it is funny to me how many false or incomplete stories there are online about UNO's history. I saw one just the other day that said Mattel bought it from Merle Robbins, they just completely left IGI out of the story.
      My daughter just likes all the different Uno decks, especially the mini ones. But I like the history of it. I have a 1973c Red box deck and a 1972 Green box IGI deck. I am still on the hunt for one of the 1971 Robbins decks.

      @@jeramyh9344 Awesome. A family that plays together stays together. Good luck on the hunt for that early Robbins game. I found the one I show in my book and in the video on EBay and was pumped to find it.

    • @jeramyh9344
      @jeramyh9344 Рік тому

      @@SeizethePlay yes, I got mine off EBay as well. They tried to sell it as a Robbins deck. But it says 1972c International Games Inc. right on the box.
      I didn't mind though. As a collector I was just excited to have one from before the color change.
      I tried joking with my daughter that I was going to bring it to UNO night at work. She did not find that even a little bit funny.

    I'll go first. In a tree house.

      I worked at an amusement park for a summer and the day I moved into the employee dorms I spotted around 15 people playing an Uno game with what looked like at least 5 decks of cards. There were people holding around half a deck of cards in their hands; it was great. In that moment I knew I was gonna fit right in :)

      My wife and I taught English to high school and college kids in Slovakia in 2002-2003, and I have never met a more competitive bunch of UNO players. They had created all kinds of rules that we didn't know about, and the game was incredibly fast-paced and competitive! Thanks for the great video!

    It WASN'T INVENTED BY THIS GUY.
    This game was in the PUBLIC Domain long before UNO came along.
    It is CRAZY EIGHTS
    Lots of variation have the last card rule.

    • @SeizethePlay
      @SeizethePlay  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. If you watch the video, I show how it was based on Crazy Eights (which is in the public domain), however Merle and his family made their own version, trademarked the name, game it it's now iconic look, tweaked the rules and maybe most importantly, popularized the game by selling it in RV parks, barber shops, butcher shops etc, willing it to success. : )

      Crazy 8s- Cool time-killer card game to play with friends, decent rules
      UNO- Cool card game for time killing to play with friends… and get into arguments, and ridiculous rounds.

    • @MissMoontree
      @MissMoontree 2 місяці тому

      @@ThatIsALakeSir Honestly they are the same, uno was to make the rules universal, as in one language or place you'd have different meanings to cards. Wild 4 is the joker, reverse and swap were or weren't included in certain games.

    My family has the cards that are the second addition/after the green ones.
    We don't have the box anymore but what years did they make those ones?
    If i am correct the package stayed the same after the green until Mattel bought it?

      @@SeizethePlay I have no idea. All that I know is that they aren’t around any more. Most of the businesses in Reading during the 19th Century aren’t around any more. Theres a street here called Benson St and back then it had tons of shops like ice cream shops, barber shops, furniture stores, and a popular theatre called Emery Theater, However now Benson St is a Bridal District (the biggest one in Cincinnati and I think Ohio) and one of the buildings had a big Uno card painted on the side.
      I do know that Merle Robbins son, Ray Robbins and his wife were teachers at Hilltop Elementary School (which is where I went to elementary school. But it’s also no longer around) and he handed out their Uno game and supposedly another game he invented called Thunder.
      The original card decks have his home address on them which was a street called W Crest which is the same street my grandma lives on.
      After seeing pictures of the original cards they look so familiar and I know I’ve played with them in the past. I just can’t remember if I own them, or if they were at my grandmas house, or if I played with them in elementary school.
