  • Sickle cell disease is a serious and lifelong health condition caused by a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person's parents. The most common type is known as sickle cell anaemia and results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin found in the red blood cells.
The highest frequency of sickle cell disease is found in tropical regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, tribal regions of India, and the Middle East. A recent report by the #WorldHealthOrganisation estimated that around 2% of newborns in Nigeria were affected by #sicklecellanaemia, giving a total of 150,000 affected children born every year in the country alone. However, there appears to be hope on the horizon for persons suffering from this debilitating disease, as the National Health Service of England has announced that thousands of patients in England will benefit from the first treatment for sickle cell disease in two decades.
The treatment has been made possible due to #Crizanlizumab, a revolutionary life-changing drug treatment. Crizanlizumab will be delivered by a transfusion drip and works by binding to a protein in the blood cells to prevent the restriction of blood and oxygen supply. But as welcome as the drug may be to millions of sufferers around the world, including here in Nigeria, there are still some barriers.
Professor #OluAkinyanju, an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and Chairman, Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, and Dr #BolaOwolabi, a #GenerationQ Fellow and Director, Health Inequalities at #NHS England and NHS Improvement, discuss this breakthrough drug in the treatment of sickle cell disease.

Somebody has raised the issue of elocution, which shouldn’t really be extra relevant in this or any topical discussion. But it has been given a very sharp relief of great relevance here. Especially, when you compare Dr Owolabi’s delivery to that of the Professor’s.
Heavens! The Professor displayed a most shoddy performance. His performance is like pulling a bad tooth, painfully, from his mouth. Or he accepted his invite to the studio at duress, kicking and screaming, to boot!
Even with all the avalanche of good news they received and were practically inundated with, it was like icy cold water on him. The good Doctor in the UK was joyfully riding the good tide and tidings. Whereas the Professor remained as dull as ever. What a sad difference!
And may I seize this opportunity to advise Rufai. He doesn’t necessarily need all this rigmarole, he often deploys, to ask a simple and direct question. Most of the time, in the process, he exposes himself in many unsavoury, but avoidable ways and/or shoots himself in foot. He can do better!

The Professor is quite old. I met him about four years ago and he was already 83 years old then and so, his speech delivery can't certainly match up with a young woman of Dr. Owolabi's age. Again, Dr. Owolabi has known about the new drug for a while but the Prof just heard about it.
Old people, due to experience, don't get easily excited as young people.
The drug was tried on scd people living in the UK and so, it may need to be tried here too first before being made generally available.
Prof was indirectly making that point but his use of "trial" repeatedly was taking to be a mistake.
