John may not have had the flash or flair of Neil, but he was solid as a rock.

I love how Geddy was playing a Precision bass on this track but it's so heavy and clanky it sounds like the Ric, which he hadn't even bought yet.

For decades, I considered that first Rush album one of the very best examples of Ric tone ever. Only to find out that yes, it was indeed performed on a fender p-bass. Which increased my appreciation of those basses. John Wetton of Asia/King Crimson is another player who wrung a very Ric like tone out of the precision.

Dead-nuts accurate. Great minds think alike, and ours do too.

I never picked up on that... This would fit-in (semi)seamlessly with their "Paranoid"-era output/work.🥁🎚🥁

Listening to so many isolated bass tracks and then I come across this one. Geddy’s runs even on more basic compositions like this one are so much better than anyone else’s. Wow!

No offense man, but I dont think you give John enough credit, this was after all the only album he ever played on. While Neil is kick ass and a great fit for Rush, we really dont know how John's drumming could have progressed. I think hes pretty damn on with this track, great hard rock kind of drumming, precise and to the point.

John was a good pocket drummer. I am sure you know what that means. I never found any fault in his drumming. Just was not eventually going to fit into their scope of things.

i read an anecdote about how when Geddy and Alex presented Anthem to John, John had trouble figuring out how to groove to the intro in 7/8, that it just wasn't his thing, whereas Neil instinctively knew how to nail it. Geddy has said that John was more into Bad Company and the like, and that they wanted to go into very different musical directions, and so he wouldn't have worked out with the direction Geddy and Alex wanted to go with the music

I really like the way John played. However I heard he had health issues that would have prevented him from touring with the others, so Rush management thought it be better to get another Drummer.. I feel he was delt an unfair hand as well.

John Rutsey was no Neil Peart, but he was a solid rock drummer

Snare drum no strainer? Heard this song a million times never picked up on the naked snare drum sound before. When they go into the jam the snare bonk is so cool. As much as I love neil i always liked this original better than the live versions.

That groove/section before the bass “solo” at 3:00 and shit the chorus right before that too fuckin’. Also love the fact that they are not cut and paste line and the groove behind them are original and have groove to dance to…can anyone give me more recommendations of Nick O’s brilliant playing examples with any group or album.

He didn't get the Jazz Bass until 1978 and didn't start regularly using it live and in the studio until the 90s.
