I have various sizes and degrees of shade cloths as some areas have hot sun longer than others and don't forget to remove them once the temperatures drop or sun passes the area. Clothes pins are great for hanging - my neighbors think I am nuts as I walk around with a dozen clothes pins clipped to my shirt as I am putting up the shades. LOL Great video!

I'm using nature to shade my garden from the summer heat in central Alabama. A silver maple tree, planed near the garden, provides shade in the hottest part of the afternoon. The garden get plenty of sun in the morning and midday.

I was thinking of asking something along these lines. Thank you! We get a lot of morning and early afternoon sun in our garden plot, and afternoon is shaded by our woods. Was wondering if I still would need shade cloth. LOL going to just go with it this year and see how things grow. Appreciate your experience! Have a great day and good growing! - Judith
@@biblicalprepping The only problem I am having is sunscald with my Muncher cucumbers, no problems with my Chicago Pickeling cucumbers. I'm sticking with the Chicaho Cucumber as my primary plant. I'm having too may problems getting the Muncher Cucumber past the seedling stage, so I've scrapped them ffom my list. Next spring, I will experiment with other varieties, Marketmore and Straight 8 for variety.
@@jaytoney3007 I have National Pickling but haven't tried them this year yet. They didn't sprout last year at all. :-( My favorite have been the Marketmore 76 (love them for canning, pickling, and eating raw), but I have had a hard time getting them to grow the last couple of years. Very frustrating. I am on my fifth or sixth attempt at starting seeds now. They just will not sprout. Tried four different methods. Hoping to get SOME in for pickles before our first frost. We are at 3400 ft in the Appalachians, so first frost is listed as mid-September, but can be unpredictable. PRAYING it is late this year!
@@biblicalprepping It sounds like you are having similar luck to mine with the Muncher Cucumber. I get them to sprout, then they die off within a few days. I got one plant out of nine seeds. Needless to say, I tossed the seeds in the trash. The chicago Pickeling Cucumber has been a steady producer, and will continue to be my primary plant, but I like variety in my diet, so I am looking for a second or third variety. National Pickeling, Marketmore, and Straight 8 are on my list to try next spring. After that, I may try other varieties in an experimental garden patch. This fall, I am adding another 4x8 raised bed top my garden that will be primarily used to shade lettuce and endivve to extwnd the season, and experimentation. My main garden beds are shifting from experimentation to production.
dont laugh, but got one of these, for me camper van, I set it up around 2 to 3" off the roof, reason is this, it helps keep the noise down when it rains, it stops the rain hitting the metal roof, best £6 I have spent,
Last summer, with drought and temperatures well over 100 degrees for close to 3 months, we were able to keep our garden going into July with starting the fall garden in August. 40% worked over the ground beds and in our summer greenhouse. I even bought a 70% one across the front of our west facing porch. The shade cloth allowed us to work in the garden, under shade, until almost noon on those 105+ degree days. Blackberries thrived under them.

I automatically shade ALL my new transplants until they can establish their roots deeper in the soil, when they can handle the sun more without cover. However, I do provide continued protection from the hottest sun of the day for tomatoes and peppers. I also use white row covers for protection; I like the way the bright light reflects off the straw mulch...keeping it bright, but cooler.

Very timely! I have always needed MORE sun gardening in the Pacific Northwest…until the last few years. Last year when we had an extreme event in June with trip,e digits, I lost most of my vegetables…the tomatoes in particular couldn’t take that much heat when so young. That was the point whete I started thinking about shade cloth, wondering if people would think I was crazy! Great info Gary and I will use this to start some fall crops (this year it has been too cold and wet up to July to grow tomatoes! Even the local farmers shifted most of their planting from summer to fall crops when the rain and cool days persisted.).

A huge help in shading plants is to plant fast-growing trees on the side where the sun comes from. Depending on how big the tree gets and how wide it's umbrella is, it may save having to do shade cloths at all. When the tree is small, it's going to need a couple of years to get big enough to block the sun. That is why I put my containers up close to my medium sized mulberry tree. That's about 80% shade all day. I don't have to move the containers, and they have done really well all summer. I'm in Florida and it has been a scorcher here. I have large jacaranda trees, a huge loquat, a medium sized mango, and another large tree, a poinciana. So I have a lot shade from fast growing trees. But shade cloth is a must as growers are complaining that their plants just aren't able to handle the heat, and the soil is baking the roots from the sun. So while gardeners are not used to planting in the shade, dappled shade really does wonders if you have established trees. Shade cloth can be made from most any fabric, and the rain will go right through. But fasten them securely, and make sure you are getting enough sun blocked. If your leaves are still wilting, do a second layer rather than remove the first.
As the climate is getting warmer, I am investing in shade cloth for all the reasons you mentioned. I live in zone 6b, and use 50% shade cloth and 7 ft t-posts to suspend it over my beds.

A while back you talked about putting netting over your brassicas to keep white/ cabbage butterflies out? So I had started doing this last year works great for the butterflies but seems to be a nursery for aphids. Have you noticed this? What are best methods for prevention and removal? Thanks So just curious, you have never mentioned children, and your garden is 5 times bigger than mine and we seem to get way more than we need. What do you do with surpluses. We've had triple digits for a week. A couple days in the 90's then back to triple digits. The garden is almost destroyed. Shadecloth helped last year when we didn't have triple digits for weeks.

I got a 40 per cent shade cloth over my tomatoes and the plants are spindly with no blossoms. Very disappointed. I live in Central Mississippi. I am digging them up and transferring to a more sunny spot.Maybe I’ll get a tomato before frost.😩
I'm right above you in zone 7a, North Delaware. Question: is it ok to just toss the shade cloth over my plastic row cover during the intense heat and just remove it when the temps drop?
I’m setting up a pepper garden for the spring on 2024 and I’m tying to figure out what to do about shade cloth, maybe you can help? The grow area will be about 20’ x about 30’ - 40’ or so and here in Texas they’ll be getting temps of 100+ degrees for weeks. There is a house blocking the sun for a while in the morning to the east and another blocking the late afternoon sun. The sun will be hitting the pepper plants from about 11am to 7pm on the longest days. It gets so hot you can’t stand on the porch barefoot. The plants will all be in 7 gallon grow bags and spread out over the area to allow room for growth. Here is my question: should I cover the entire area with a shade cloth? I’ll use hooks on the house on one side and a rope setup on the other to stretch the canopy to connect to the second house. I’ll be able to disconnect the rope side and drag the cloth out of the way on days where it may be cool or rainy. Cool will be mid 90s during peak summer time. Overall it will be about 8’ off the ground and the breeze will blow through as normal. I’m also going to use tomato cages to support the plants as the grow so some may get to 5’ in height I’m told. Am I ok with this idea? To completely cover the plants? What % cloth would be best when covering the entire area? Please advise, thanks.
I probably would go with 70% shade cloth. At least 50%. Depends on how many hour of sun pound the area. Rare peppers to get past 4 feet in Maryland but they could get tall based on temps and how long they are growing. The cages should work fine. I would cover in what ever way is easiest to put up and take down. A tip I might add, if the grow bags are staying in place. Open the bottom a bit to let roots grow out. Good luck. I’m sorry, I’m still a little confused on percentage. I am not Arizona, but consistent 105 to 110° days In North Central Arkansas, my beautiful tomato blossoms took a beating. What do you suggest? In my desperation, bedsheets salvaged the plants but pretty close to 0% light was getting through. Per your video I’m thinking 50-60%? TIA.

Thanks, very timely. Do you think new plants such as cucumber or squash/zucchini seedlings started indoors late could be transplanted in the garden during summer and protected by 60-70% shade cloth? I live in SCal.

Great video, Gary! A question for you...insulating row cover is sold for use with cold temps as well as protecting from extreme heat. Would you recommend using plant cover (white material that looks like interfacing) vs shade cloth? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. 🙏🏼
They are a bit different but the both help with the heat. I dont really have a recommendation but for what is the cheapest and does it do the trick. I just bought and put up 70% shade cloth, and am now realizing it might be blocking too much sun. It's been in the low 90's already here in Western Colorado, early June, and no doubt will get hotter as the summer comes on. In your opinion, is this 70% blocking too much sun? Thanks!
I do use 70 for high July heat in Maryland. 50% other times. If it is getting that hot, I think 70 will be okay. A couple days of 90 dont matter but when you get to 4, 5, 7 etc... the shade cloth helps The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I was thinking maybe the 70% is cutting down too much on the sun, not just the heat. Have you done a video on grasshoppers? They are already invading my garden (and everyone else's that I know) and the natrual spray I tried the past two nights haven't done a thing.

So question is if we never get over80 ‘s, 60-70’’s do you think Shade cloth is something I should use? I think not but just wondering . Would like a quick answer and not another book sorry or go to your seed shop.
Lately my parents have been buying pepper plants after i expressed interest. im now beginning the process of planning out a DIY shaded area because of our incredibly hot and dry climate. Throughout the research ive done after this video has lead me to believe that a 70~80 shade is what ill need. However i fear it wont be effective enough when the sun forgets to turn off the broiler and subsequent us to 110°F and plus weather for 3~4 months. Our average moisture is 0 with if luck a pennys width of rain so watering will be monitored carefully. I do not want to risk the plants my parents entrusted to me. If you have any opinions or advice im open ears.
70% is good. And mulch the soil. I would set up like this. On crazy hot days, you can add an addition bed sheet or something. I need to get more and my first sun shade is white and is doing fine and doesn't seem to get hot at all. I'm just curious whether you find the black sun shades absorb more heat than the lighter colors do.
Nope any color is about the same when used above the ground. They all shed heat fast. If you were laying it on the ground for some reason, lighter is better. Gary some gardeners in Southern Australia have 50% shade cloth permanently installed summer and winter. We can often reach low 40 degrees Celsius (105F) during summer and average 8 degrees C (46F) minimum over winter. A couple of summers ago we reached 48.9 degrees C (120F). Shade cloth is a winner!

Sorry to bother you but I’m a new gardener. And your videos have helped me tremendously. My garden was doing great. Yesterday we got a severe thunderstorm, hail wind storm. I work away Monday through Wednesday night. Only got to glimpse at my garden but it appears almost 75% destroyed. Any tips? Should I try to save what I can? Should I hurry and replant some things? I’m in zone 6b or 6a.
So trim back the damage and give everything some water soluble fertilizer. A big drink for damages plants. Anything will work. You can really start new seeds for tomato and peppers but you can start squash, zukes and cucumbers again. You have more summer to go for sure. Please subscribe if you have a chance (Thanks!) Harbor Freight has 2 sizes of mesh tarp that work good. Very sturdy and 60 to 70 percent shade. Have used same one for 4 years no issues.
I have various sizes and degrees of shade cloths as some areas have hot sun longer than others and don't forget to remove them once the temperatures drop or sun passes the area.
My favorite have been the Marketmore 76 (love them for canning, pickling, and eating raw), but I have had a hard time getting them to grow the last couple of years.

Great practice

Very timely! I have always needed MORE sun gardening in the Pacific Northwest…until the last few years. Last year when we had an extreme event in June with trip,e digits, I lost most of my vegetables…the tomatoes in particular couldn’t take that much heat when so young. That was the point whete I started thinking about shade cloth, wondering if people would think I was crazy! Great info Gary and I will use this to start some fall crops (this year it has been too cold and wet up to July to grow tomatoes! Even the local farmers shifted most of their planting from summer to fall crops when the rain and cool days persisted.).
Shade cloth makes a big difference. Good luck.

It sure is getting warmer here

A while back you talked about putting netting over your brassicas to keep white/ cabbage butterflies out? So I had started doing this last year works great for the butterflies but seems to be a nursery for aphids. Have you noticed this? What are best methods for prevention and removal? Thanks
So just curious, you have never mentioned children, and your garden is 5 times bigger than mine and we seem to get way more than we need. What do you do with surpluses. You are doing the community a valuable service thank you
I didnt notice but for it stopping the butterflies and worms. I use it to teach and give a lot away. My kids are grown. Aphids I hit them with soapy water spray.

And if so would you recommend 40 50 or 70 ??
Melons can benefit. If you are getting high 90s and 100s melon will be impacted. Any of those would work. But for melon 40 or 50.

Just a simple question. Since I use a cheesecloth / Muslim type shade cloth for my herbs on the west side of my porch where the evening Sun gets really hot. Would it be wise to get white shade cloth instead of black? Do they have or offere degree of shade blocking in white? Thank you. I love watching your videos. Have a blessed day.
They have different colors but shade cloth sheds heat fast and the black cools very quickly.

Good luck.

In my desperation, bedsheets salvaged the plants but pretty close to 0% light was getting through. Per your video I’m thinking 50-60%? TIA.

Great video, Gary! A question for you...insulating row cover is sold for use with cold temps as well as protecting from extreme heat. Would you recommend using plant cover (white material that looks like interfacing) vs shade cloth? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. 🙏🏼
Works in 110f Oklahoma.
I use row cover for shade on some beds because it's what I have on hand, but it's hard to say what percent of sun is getting through.
Shade cloth will allow a breeze through it, row-cover will not, which could be stifling hot if you drape it around and close to the plants.

A couple days of 90 dont matter but when you get to 4, 5, 7 etc... the shade cloth helps

So question is if we never get over80 ‘s, 60-70’’s do you think Shade cloth is something I should use? I think not but just wondering . Would like a quick answer and not another book sorry or go to your seed shop.
LOL the book part is just auto added. Its not extra writing. With days in the 60-70's there is no need for shade cloth.
